Blog Posting #12 - Gamergate and Gender Politics on the Web
1) Do you play video games of any kind? What are your thoughts in response to both of these pieces?
yes, i play video games, not as much as i used to tho. as far as the video, I always noticed the damsel and distress with the women needing to be saved. I didn't understand it growing up but as i got older i can see how this could be a continuous theme in games. Playing a sort of psychological game with peoples minds through gameplay.
2) One of the interesting elements of Anita Sarkeesian’s video series on youtube is that it traces the histories of these constructions, showing that they don’t just appear out of thin air. Can you think of other ways that previous trends or technologies have influenced the way we use current digital technologies?
Previous trends that come in mind are things like games, movies, social media, and even television .Technologies of today are, in my opinion, illuminate and capture our imaginations to a crazier level now, and its only getting more realistic to people now.
3) Are there other examples of gender construction that you witness on other means of digital technology - such as the internet, social media, art, or others?
I feel as though social media is the biggest example of gender construction of them all. Social media is a platform in which people put up anything that they like or think other people like or say anything they want. If they want to sell sex like most companies do for advertisements, they can curve a persons thoughts by giving them what they want them to see.

Blog Posting #9 - 24/7
1) Select a paragraph from the selection here that strikes you as the most significant component of what he is saying. Explain why and elaborate upon what Crary has written.
2) How does Crary talk about specifically the visual and visual experience in terms of the digital?
Cary states that this continuous access to numerical imagery is a way to expand peoples egos, and that wanting to be submerged in it often is a channel for human egosim.
3) Compare Crary’s take to Kevin Kelly’s take from last week. Do you tend to agree more with one or the other? Can either of these opinions be reconciled with the other?
Crary’s and Kelly’s takes are both respectable but I am in agreement more with Kelly. Kelly’s foundation was more on how technology is vital to our everyday life as something crucial to live. I believe Crary was opposing technology with the variations it has caused for society. I feel these arguments can both match because they both speak on teh growth of society with technology, from different spectrums.

1) Kelly traces the history of “technology” in a general sense. Do you agree with this history?
Kelly explains that technology is not just gadgets and PC’s. I believe Kelly is explanation of technology is that technology is forever evolving and that technology has helped shape our culture and ways of thinking. I agree with Kelly’s general thoughts on the evolution of technology in history. Technology is our way of being more sophisticated and understanding on different levels.
2) How would you summarize the way that Kelly describes technology?
Kelly explains that technology is an extension of life, which is true because with out it we would not be able to survive in our world as it is today. Technology with no purpose pushes us to find a purpose or create better technology. so when we look at creative programs, they have their own unique function to simplify things that would otherwise become more difficult.
3) How can we see these creative programs, such as Photoshop, etc., through this kind of lens/perspective?
We can look at programs as technology, not in the mid frame that it is a new apps or gadgets but that it was created with the idea of purpose for society. with the evolution of society, technology creates a new, and along with evolution comes newer unique technology.

1. What is the general consensus of these articles as to why Flash is a dated and problematic form?
The general consensus is that flash is held up because there is no support from software companies such as IMB, Microsoft, or Apple. I agree with them for not supporting flash. Apple has a lot of high tech touch screen products so I can see where they are coming from.
2. How is Flash a (perhaps surprisingly) difficult media form to conserve and archive, in comparison to other forms of digital media?
Flash is a bit difficult for me to use because it is there are a lot of steps to follow to create a great production and i’m new to using flash so it poses difficult challenges sometimes for me. Flash is closely related to the application Photoshop. It is also difficult to use because you have to have the timing and layers in order correctly to be used in a persist way.
3. What does this make you think about the context and permanency of the digital elements we are working with?
In my opinion, technology is always evolving. For any program to stay constant for a long time is a unheard of. growing up the internet was on the windows program and overran by Internet Explorer. Now Internet Explorer is starting to get outdated and under used, and Google Chrome is moving into that starting spot now.
4.What are some other examples that you can think of, of technologies that have become obsolete and replaced by better versions of themselves? Do old technologies ever come back?
I feel as though social media is great example of things being recreated in better images of themselves. Programs live Myspace was overtaken by Facebook and Instagram. Instagram is slowly being overran by the snapchat application. Flat back, touch screen computers have been in for quite a while now and they have moved big back PC’s out of the way. Technology has changed so rapidly in the last ten years and everyday someone innovates our worlds technologically.

Blog Posting #5
1: This is picture from Lisbon Portugal, My uncle lives on this street and this street to me is just one of the most amazing places i’ve been. Its completely different from the landscape of houses in the states and the colors bring out the character of the fun in Portugal.
2: I Found it interesting that Heiferman revealed that many imagers are rejected. Each picture holds a part of someones imagination and or memories but the fact that many of those images will be disoriented under the mountain. In other words, the memory or creativity of the image isn't necessary. Sometimes these moments are lost forever because they are unwelcome by one person or group. Even in its arrangment, the picture is made in its individuality and should be cherished.
3: In my opinion there is a difference between a photographic print on a wall rather then a digital photograph on a screen. I feel like there is always going to be a different feeling to see a picture thta you can actually feel in your hands rather then what you see that is digitally created on a computer screen.I much rather prefer a photograph on a screen then wall because Im more of a new age photograph person where as I like the 3D looks from a screen.
Blog Posting #4 - Animated GIFs We will talk more about animated gifs and net art in the web section of the class. But we’ll get a head start, and learn a bit about the history of the gif format (and yes, it is pronounced “Jiff”) and make your own animated gif, first online and in class in Photoshop. First, read the following blog posting by Anil Dash: http://dashes.com/anil/2011/07/animated-gifs-triumphant.html Second, watch this great short film on youtube, from PBS - http://youtu.be/vuxKb5mxM8g To make an animated gif, as you will see, you need a series of still images, ideally of all the same size (you can always resize images as needed in Photoshop). These can be very closely related, to tell a story or in essence create a short movie or slideshow; or they can be unrelated, and jarring, to produce a very different effect. You can pull stills from a video clip to make a gif out of a preexisting film; or assemble images from your own photos or the web to make something from scratch. A couple of good websites are http://makeagif.com/ and http://gifmaker.me/, which make it fairly easy to produce your gif. You can upload your images and adjust the size and speed, and then create and save your image, which you should then post on your blog. If you can, make the image a maximum size of 500 pixels, and maximum size of 1 MB. Otherwise it may not work properly on tumblr. Besides posting the image, please also answer the following questions:
1) Based on the reading/video, why do you think that the animated gif is such a popular delivery device for images at the moment?
Gifs are interesting new way of a combination of picture and video that young people like to use. Its a cool new way to post on your social media. To me its sort of the next level meme. and you get a whole new look at what at how your gif will be looked at.
2) Explain the idea behind your own gif.
My gif is from last year when i played football for Gateway Community College. The idea behind it, is that i was in beast mode and couldn’t be stopped.

Blog Posting #3 - The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction This will be perhaps the most challenging and largest amount of reading for a blog post this semester. I ask you to bear with me. It’s worth it. Walter Benjamin’s essay, “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” is a crucial text in the progression of our understanding of art and culture. Written in 1935, it was Benjamin’s attempt to come to terms with new technologies in art and media and their interaction with society. Benjamin is a tragic figure, a critic and philosopher, who committed suicide when trying to escape from the Nazis in 1940. This is a challenging essay, but it is very much worth your time and thought. Please read the essay and answer the following questions in a post on your blog. These are substantial questions that demand substantial answers. The accompanying essay in The New Yorker by Alex Ross does a nice job of pointing out the contemporary relevance of Benjamin’s work. You might chose to read the Benjamin first, then the Ross, and then return to the Benjamin; you might also read the Ross first as a preview.
1) Can the “mechanical reproduction” that Benjamin discusses be compared to an idea of “digital reproduction” today?
Digital art has a different approach of reproduction. I do not think that mechanical reproduction can be compare to digital reproduction because the process is different. It is not an imitation of an original piece of art, but a modification and transformation of the original piece. Some digital model can use multiple original pieces, which are all blended in like a “melted-pot”, to create a totally original new piece of art. Mechanical reproduction is mostly a replica, if not, it has a similar theme as its original. A digital reproduction can have the same original picture, but the artist might change the tones or the colors to create a new message about the piece. I see digital art not as a mechanical reproduction, but as an original way to change antic art or primary piece and make them more modern in various ways.
2) Explain what Benjamin means when he refers to the “aura” of something.
Benjamin talks about pieces of art having an aura, something that is priceless and never attainable. Great 19th century artists started models and created fantastic pieces of art that modern artist uses today as references. He explains the aura as being somewhat of a shadow on modern art. The aura itself is a lost theme of the 19th century and no artist today can replicate that artistry magic. He says basically that the touch has been lost.
3) Benjamin makes an analogy in the text contrasting the relationship between a magician and a surgeon and the relationship between a painter and photographer. Expand this to the contemporary moment – where would Benjamin put the “digital artist”?
The digital artist would fall above the photographer, but would not surpass the talent of the painter. The question that lies in my mind, just like Walter Benjamin, is whether if photography should be consider as an art and fall at the same level as many famous painters. The reason why I choose to place the digital artist in the middle is because I think that being a digital artist requires the element of creativity. Just like a painter, a digital artist builds their own piece. They use different pixels or image and create an original model. A photographer takes pictures of an original landscape or any other thing he or she thinks might attract viewers. The photographer’s art is mostly a replica of an original thing. It misses creativity and that is why I think it lies below the digital artist.
4) Benjamin ends with a rather stunning Epilogue where he discusses the intersection of war, art, and politics. Do you agree with his assessment, and does it still hold today if so?
War is part of life. The human species were born with the instinct of conquering and having power. It will always exist and it is happening right now. Second- and third-world countries battle against corrupt politics almost every day. It has been proven that during times of war, the finest pieces of art have been created. For example, during the civil-war, many artists used their power as an influence to express their feelings in their paintings, music’s, sculptures or any other type of art. War is an emotional process and artists mostly express themselves better when feelings float around their heads. Politics as always been the instigator of war. It only takes one to get people together and convince them that other political views are either wrong or evil. Hitler can be a very good example of this. Does it still hold today? I would say yes. Like I said before, many countries are in war because of politics. Benjamin explains that war illuminates artist to created art, it gives new ideas and brings creativity and artist today are in deep search for this.
5) Think of some of your favorite pieces of popular culture, keeping in mind Benjamin’s and Ross’s essays. How do you think that the technology of their dissemination affects the meaning of the work?
I believe the technology of the dissemination of today’s popular culture causes people to form perceptions of the works without actually grasping the entire concept. The media does such a good job of advertising things by showing as little of the actual work as possible. They target consumers and audiences which diminishes the value behind the work by not letting it speak for itself based on its worth.
