Oh, Pepper could go on and on about everything that was going on right now⦠But she didnāt need to bog down Natasha with useless details and dwelling upon half the things that were wrong would not make her feel any better or grant her any miracle solutions.
[TEXT: Natasha] Have you ever done something you wish you could take back? [TEXT: Natasha] The one thing if you could, youād go back and change?
[TEXT: Pepper] You know that I have.
Natashaās mistakes in the past werenāt exactly unknown. The specifics, maybe. At least, the ones she didnāt dump on the internet when she was exposing Hydra. It was still widely known that Natasha was a far from perfect person. Some days it felt like she was struggling to even be classed as decent.
[TEXT: Pepper] We canāt change them. Best not to think about them.
From One Spider to Another
The training centre had changed. With every step she took, Natasha could list off more and more differences. That wasnāt the surprise. She had been keeping an eye on Tony the same way she had been with everyone else. She knew they were renovating and changing things around.
The surprise came to do with training Spider Man. The Widow wasnāt expecting any kind of olive branches after what she did, yet here she was. The strong hold he had on his secret identity almost came as a shock to Natasha. In battle, it was understandable. Just around the tower seemed odd to her. Of course, she couldnāt judge him for that, of all things. She was a spy. She knew all about keeping masks on, even if hers werenāt literal masks.Ā
āWhat are you actually expecting from this?ā Natasha had the material to train him for months, but that wasnāt good if he was looking for something in particular. After all, it was Natasha for a reason. No one was asking for her back because they missed her.

TāChalla can feel someoneās eyes on him before he knows who it is. He doesnāt look, but he does have his guard up. It doesnāt feel like malicious intent, even when the person walks up to him from behind.
Ah. That voice. Who else could it be?
TāChalla smiles, and turns slightly to face her. āMiss Romanoff,ā he hums. āAs nice as it is to see you, I do not think addressing a king like that is wise.ā He steps ahead in line as it inches forward. Natasha is welcome to join him.
āWhat is so urgent that you must speak to me now?ā He doesnāt look directly at Natasha. Obviously sheās trying to stay hidden, and he doesnāt want to be noticed either. So he draws as little attention to the pair of them as possible by pretending theyāre not together.
Natasha stepped in time with him, close enough to talk to him in a hushed voice. Yet also not close enough to raise suspicion. It was a skill she had learned to perfect over time.Ā
āDidnāt you hear myĀ ānot a wordā?ā Despite the fact he couldnāt see her, she still raised an eyebrow along with her question.Ā āWell, as nice as it is to see you, I donāt think resisting is wise. Not a threat, but an observation.ā A faint smirk was etched onto her face.
"There's a reason I'm asking you to leave before we speak," Natasha explained.Ā āNot exactly the kind of conversation you have in a public line. Iām sure youād respect the idea for privacy once you know what weāll be discussing.ā

Oh, now perhaps this would be fun after all.
āHow charming. A pleasure to see you too, Widow.ā
Loki could stand up a little straighter, remind her of just how much he towers over her, but it hardly seems necessary. Sheāll be watching for just such a display as a signal of weakness, and heās not keen to satisfy her.
āIām enjoying some time among familiar faces. No harm in that.ā
Loki could feign innocence as much as he wanted, Natasha wouldnāt buy it. She knew who he was. Not someone that would be here for any reason that didnāt involve causing trouble.
āCharm always has been one of my best traits,ā she replied, matching his sarcasm.Ā āI donāt care how open Steve said this event was, youāre not welcome here. Leave before I make you.ā
But weāre still friends, right?

The first text made her laugh. She remembered Happy saying something similar to her once when she first took on the role as CEO for Stark Industries. It nice to hear it from someone else, though.
It was the second text that gave her pause. Surviving⦠Honestly, Pepper almost felt like she was drowning with the way things have been for the past few months.
[TEXT: Natasha] Sometimes thatās all we can do, right?
She would take those kind of emotions on herself without hesitation, accepting the fact that thatās just how life is. However, it was much more upsetting to know her friends were going through the same.
With how messed up things have gotten, who wasnāt just scraping by? Some better than others, but no one seemed truly okay.
[TEXT: Pepper] Lifeās a bitch sometimes.
[TEXT: Pepper] Whatās up with you?

Ah, Natalia. Always thought that if she hid herself from the world, sheād be able to finally win the game of life. It didnāt matter which day or age it was, he would still see her as the girl he mentored to become a brilliant spy. āWhat would I do for a little small talk around here,ā he said in a small sigh, glancing around the exhibits which loomed over them. It was⦠comforting, to be in a place where history asserted itself without a qualm. It made himself feel less of a fossil.
āNot a fan of dinosaurs?ā he asked, tipping his head at the Brontosaurus display they were standing right by. Her face was, as always, a perfect poker face which he could only dream of cracking through. Not that he wasnāt unsuccessful, it just took practice which he was clearly out of.
āThereās something here I want,ā he conceded after he felt her glare pinned at his back. āWas hoping youād be up for a little B&E.ā
Her eyes now looked over the display they were standing in front of. Sometimes he made teasing him way too early. Not that she was above taking those easy shots. āQuite the opposite, actually. Reminds me of my two favourite super-soldiers.ā Her gaze rested on James again. Now with a smirk playing on her features.Ā āThis is more your time, right?ā
Of course, she wouldnāt have been called here for something as basic and domestic as catching up. That has never been how they did things.Ā āWhatās it worth to me?ā She probably could have done it in her sleep and still not get caught, but she wasnāt going to risk it for no reason. She wasnāt going to risk the possibility of James being arrested and taken away from Steve. Not after everything he had gone through for him.

Being a masochist seemed to be a trait that wasnāt exclusive to any one of his three personalities; James in particular seemed to indulge in it a lot more. Why else would he be back in his own memorialised graveyard, staring at a life size portrait of himself. Well, someone who looked a hell lot like him but way better. His eye bags right now? They could give one of those panda creatures a solid run for their money.
It was painful to see the person he could have been but it was always a good reminder. A reminder that he used to be human. A reminder that he still could be. He shoved his hands into the heavy winter coat he tended to wear these days, going through another exhibit. He knew so much about Captain America that he might as well be one of those groupie fans who tended to stalk Steve whenever he was in uniform. Talking about uniformā¦
It was his fourth visit here and damn, Bucky had some fine taste in uniform. It looked a hell lot better than whatever crap Cap was wearing. His hands itched to text Steve, it was an unhealthy routine he had built up, but the knowledge that the big lumbering fool would track him down if he knew where he was kept him from reaching out.
He was going through the Howling Commandos section of the exhibition when a familiar scent washed over him. He never had a name for that scent, apart from it being a faint mixture of gunpowder and apples. He never did question her what that scent was.
āŠŠ°Šŗ поживаеŃŃ?ā he said in the form of greeting, tipping his head to the side. He hadnāt heard a single squeak (and his right ear was somehow more attuned to sound than the left) but he knew she had tracked him down without even looking to his left.
When she first saw him, Natasha debated turning to leave before she was spotted. Like she said to Steve, may not want to pull on that thread. Bucky had been gone for a while and things had changed for them both. At least Natasha knew he had at least some control over his mind. Steve didnāt have that kind of reassurance when he first went. She knew that advice was much easier to give than to take.
Then again, when the hell did Natasha Romanoff ever back down? Never. Besides, she made the effort to come down here for him and he promised heād at least try. There was no excuse for her not to.
He had invited her here and was expecting her to show up, but Natasha still felt the need to creep up on him like a spy. Those old habits seemed to be ones she could never part with.
āŠÆ Š²ŃŠ¶ŠøŠ²Š°Ń.ā It was the truth. At least, as close as Natasha got to the truth. She could give some answers more on the pessimistic side, but that wasnāt something she was going to get into to. Not to James. Not to anyone.
Now she turned to face him properly, taking in the features of his face. This time he wasnāt trying to strangle her to death. She had time to take in this moment now. āWhy are we here, James?ā
[Steveās Birthday AU || OPEN]
Loki never arrived so much as he appearedāa testament to his flair for the dramatic. In this instance, however, the subtlety of it was more satisfying. He hadāt been explicitly invited, per se, but the time and location of the good Captainās birthday celebration had been a very poorly kept secret. And on top of that, Loki had been restless.
Loki recognized some of the attendees, but more than not are unfamiliar faces, all eager smiles and laughter. The smell of roasting meat and the hoisting of spirits felt almost AsgardianāLoki sneeredābut the surrounding urban sprawl, all dirty and uninspired angles for what seemed like forever, that was entirely Midgardian.
Loki leaned against the stark white plastic chest that held beverages languishing in ice and folded his arms over his chest. Why, exactly, had he thought this would be a good time?
The event was larger than she expected for Steve. Tons of people would love to get together and celebrate Captain America, but she had expected it to mainly be his close friends. She was instantly proven wrong when she saw multiple faces she did not recognize. Sheād have to keep a close eye on those ones.
She made her way through the crowd, identifying as many of the people as she could. Thatās when Loki caught her eye.
Natasha abandoned her original path and made her way over to the trickster. She strolled up to him, crossing her arms over her chest. āWhat are you doing here?ā Natasha snapped. The last thing they needed was Loki around causing trouble.
But weāre still friends, right?
Granted, Pepper did not know what fully happened with everything. Since Tony and her were barely speaking⦠All she knew was that Happy quietly told her, in private, not to bring up Natasha.
In a way, Pepper almost felt a little more connected to Natasha in that sense, if they were both truly on the outs with the others.
ā¦It made her almost a bit more hopeful that Natasha might feel still kind towards herā¦
[TEXT: Natasha] Canāt sleep, and I have an 8:30 meeting so no late night martinis for me. [TEXT: Natasha] How are you?
( @itsybtsywidow)
[TEXT: Pepper] You could go into that meeting drunk and still seem like the most put together person in that room.
Since Pepper had texted about something that seemed to be a specific problem, she thought she could get by without the bland small talk. Yet Pepper still asked how she was. Anyone else would have appreciated the gesture, but it was wasted on the Widow. Such a simple question shouldnāt have thrown Natasha off, yet it did. She cursed herself for a moment of what she classed as emotional weakness before she replied.
[TEXT: Pepper] Iām surviving.
