Pt.3

My final project is based on a documentary style/ life style bases. The concept of the project is “A day in the life of...” Some of the challenges I faced were finding things in my daily life that were visually interesting. The other part was including different parts of my life like at home and outside. My successes were that I did get a few images I actually like. My failures were that I didn't get anyone else in my images which I hope to work on in the next few days.

Assignment 4 Critique: Anna

The images were all very colorful and full of life but, most of the images were out of focus. A few of the images were taken from a distance I wish she would have come in more and got a portrait of a single person to get a clear reaction or expression. My favorite image was the third image I really liked the expression of the subject, I just wish we would have brought it in a bit some of the surrounding stuff is a bit distraction and really takes away from the subject. A few were also a bit over edited and the saturation and contrast causes to lose some of the detail. Another image I really enjoyed was her second self portrait the framing is pretty spot on for a hand held shot and the background is really interesting but doesn't distract you too much due to the shallow depth of field.

The most difficult part of this assignment was trying to photograph myself. It wasn’t the technical side that made it difficult but the images just didn’t make me content. The successes were that I was able to find people I didn’t know willing to be photographed.

Reading response: portraits

Article was interesting this concept that portraits can be represented in different ways and convey different messages. A portrait isn't just a picture of a person but can have a story or a kind of beauty. Hellen's portraits display this beauty in young boys we don't always see and she uses light and the trust they have for her to make these delicate shots. When photographing someone it can make a difference if you are able to get the person to open up or trust you just like Katy makes these very intimate shots of people that don't even know her. When making portraits it isn't always about making images of other but making self portraits and capturing moments with yourself or your different personas. Cindy uses different clothes and make up to give herself a different story just by dramatically changing what she looks like. Nikki lee even though once changed her appearance dramatically to fit into different cultures and communities also took portraits of herself with suddle changes. The new images include just her with hits of a man and different setting, each giving you a feeling of a different Nikki yet she still looks the same. Overall portraits can be very complex or simple but convey very different messages even within a series.

The Assignment was fun to see the difference in tones of light through the day the cool and warm tones. My successes I thin were that I was able to keep the camera in the same spot for the most part. The challenges was trying to keep the actually location the same. The other challenge was trying to get a picture with no light source.

Critique: Light 3a

I really enjoyed Jannely’s work it was aesthetically interesting. What I liked the most was the shadows and the different shapes and ways she brought them to life in each image. The light was not only understood in the way they lit the objects and the highlights but the shadows. The shadows are of different sizes and shades and sharpness. Three of the images that really grasped my attention was the first image of the vase of flowers the direct light from the side looks almost defused yet it gives us this really strong sharp shadow that give this delicate object a sense of strength and mystery. The other image I found interesting was the one of the chandelier the very defused light creating these two shadows really brings you in to determine the light source. In the last image I was intrigued by the sharp direct sun light and the shadow that really mimicked the structure. The one that distracted me was the odd shape in the top center, if possible I would remove that object. Overall the images were all properly focused and exposed except for the dog picture it was a bit overexposed.

The most difficult part from this assignment was thinking of ideas for reflective light. It was hard exposing an image with reflective light and making it not look too much like defused light. My successes were that I was able to expose and focus my images properly for the most part and have white or black backgrounds by defusing or focusing more or less light.

Critique: Jannely

At first glance the images gave me a feeling of cold and warm. The tones in the first few images in the beginning were very cool with a deep depth of field giving this sense of loneliness. Then the next few images change to indoors and the tones of the images are very warm with hints of yellow and orange and with the spaces being smaller you get more of a personal feeling. All the images were properly exposed and focused. The images of the larger spaces bring you in even more because you want to see what happens further in the images. The image that caught my eye the most was the first image the path works almost as leading lines as well at the bench and trees and it brings your eye in. The only thing I would try and change is not using flash indoor.

Assignment 2

The most difficult part of this assignment was photographing outside in the cold it made my camera lag and hands hurt. The other difficulty I had was when trying to photograph inside I had to wait for people to get out of the shot. My successes were being able to get the shots properly exposed and bracketing them with some patience.

Class critique: sameena

Sameenas work is full of color and properly exposed with a very creative edge. The photograph of her person in mid air was properly centered and well focused. The photograph was one of my favorites even though she shot the image in the library it doesn't steal focus on the person jumping and the shelves almost works as leading lines. As I said the image was probably focused and exposed very full of color and contrast bringing your eye in even more. The image that could have used some work was her portrait even though it was aesthetically interesting the rule of thirds was a bit off there was a bit too much negative space making the person loose focus in the image. The other images I found very interesting were her light patterns. The hands added to the shadows gave the images a more interesting twist. The images were properly exposed and the variation of color and contrast made each image that much more interesting than the next. The three images could even work as a series of their own.

The photographers eyes response

The article helps give an understanding of the difficulty photographers face. How can you photograph something with meaning. "He learned that the world itself is an artist of incomparable inventiveness" So with so many thing to photograph its your job to find the best moments in the most clear way you can in an image. "The photographer could not assemble these clues, into a coherent...by doing so claim for it some special significance, a meaning.." Photographers have to put together a meaning and a narrative with the best detail they can. Overall the subject, detail, frame and time are all factors that photographers must think about besides the mechanics. All the factors can change the meaning of an image it truly is a form of art and creativity.

A Manifesto for Photography Education Response

Our photographic community was once a very classified society when it came to photography. "In photography, "serious photographers" as opposed to amateurs and non-photographers." If you weren't a serious photographer you weren't really a photographer that was due to the lack of knowledge and resources. Now we have a become a community dependent on photography. We can covey a message through simply an image. Even though some may think that photography isn't really an art form. ”There will always be someone to argue that you can’t make Art with a machine” The Idea of art is that it can be anything you want it to be as long as you are creative and make something interesting that will grasps everyones attention. In this day in age anyone can be a photographer with cameras being right in our hands at all time it may feel like photography has lost is pure ascetics but it has also brought a new kind of photography. "anyone who makes, uses, edits, views, assesses, incorporates, studies, learns from or teaches with the photographic image in any of its forms on a regular basis."

Article Response

The article was very interesting and in a way relatable. The article teaches you that photography can be anything you want it to be and can be created anywhere. It doesn't matter if you have training or not it can have beauty in any way because its the viewer that might see more meaning than you. So many people have told me that photography is easy and anyone can do it. The reality is that yes, anyone can do it be not everyone does. Its taking that initiative to actually pick up a camera and capture a moment in life. The article says we can look in front of us and capture that but, we don't and the moment is gone but the best part is there's always a new moment to capture. Now in this day and age we have the ability to capture pictures with our phones instead of having to carry around heavy equipment and consider how much film we have left. The beauty in photography is it can be whatever you'd like.
