okay get this: perfumes with the names of classical pieces
I can already smell Claire de Lune. And Vivaldiās Seasons. And all of the Schoenberg scents are a bunch of smells you would never think of putting together but it actually works
4'33" is just water in a perfume bottle

question: what piece have you worked the hardest on composing and why?? (feel free to say every piece but just know my self esteem will plummet) I know a number of you are composers and Iād love to get to know you better!
This one piece Iām currently working on is probably the biggest in terms of orchestrations (nine freakin; soloists) and it has to be so meticulously structured yet feeling free and atmospheric. Itās based on W.B. Yeatsā poemĀ āTo a Child Dancing in the Windā and my teacher wants to have it performed when itās done (AHHHH). So thatās kind of terrifying. If you still care, it uses a lot of the Neo-Grecian mode with an emphasis on Ab.
Oh wow, that is so exciting! Congratulations on your teacher wanting it to get performed, that is awesome!!! And I also canāt imagine how stressful that must be haha. What is the instrumentation? The concept sounds very difficult to compose, but so so cool. Props to you for taking it on! Iām also intrigued at the idea of it being based on a poem, how are you approaching that? Sorry I have so many questions! It is just such a cool and interesting concept and Iād love to hear more about it!
Oh no I love answering these questions! Thanks for the support!
So itās for womenās semi chorus (three sopranos, two altos), guitar, harp, cello, and flute. All of the singers are in the back of stage and the words of the poem are usually introduced by waves of sound (each vocalist singing one word of a line) that go from one end to the other. Iām not really sure how to explain it haha.Ā
Using the poem was totally my teacherās idea, and he also made sure that I read it a hundred times and understand it on a level much deeper than I would normally. Like how the whole idea of a child among nature gives off the impression of spirits and immortality, so I keep the piece very airy and havenāt gone below middle C yet. And at the lineĀ āLoveās lost as soon as wonā I have the middle soprano solo as the others join in, in kind of a mournful way.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask! Hopefully tomorrow Iāll be able to share some sheet music to help clear things up :)
Woah, that is such a great ensemble! That is going to be so beautiful!!! Did you decide on the instrumentation?? I love it!
Your teacher sounds awesome! Also awesome is how dedicated you are to doing this piece right! I am honestly inspired now after reading about your piece. It sounds like it will be so effective and powerful, and how seriously you are taking the text setting and creating a world within your piece is totally inspiring. Iām having trouble putting words to what I mean but hopefully that made sense!
Thank you for sharing more about your piece, Iām a little obsessed with it now haha! Iād love to see sheet music if youāre willing to share!!!
The instrumentation all came from my teacher! Heās the genius and heās going to famous one day. Iām sure of it.
But thank you so much! Youāre literally making my night! Just for you, Iāll try to post a video when itās finally recorded (probably in a few months or so) :)
Oh gosh thank you for your responses, you totally made MY night! Also it sounds like youāre the one that will be famous one day, just saying ;) Goodness, please post a video of the recording!!! I would absolutely love that!!!
I wrote an overture for Macbeth a few months back. It may only be 6 - 8 minutes in length, yet it changes in mood along with the play. The greatest section has to be āThe Weird Sistersā, the whole section has probably the best orchestration in the whole piece.
Iām sorry if I was bad at explaining it, but itās honestly my greatest piece.
Dang, an overture?! That is so cool! That sounds like such an effective and well-composed piece, I'm so happy you are proud of it! Did it get performed??

Iām currently working on my cello sonata that I would like to dedicate to a very important person (a cellist of course). Itās probably my only composition that Iāve taken seriously. Itās not finished (Iām now on the second movement) and its meant to be in the style of Shostakovich a little bit but I want to make it personal as well. Btw itās very difficult to compose when you do not study it so donāt do it guys. The first movement is still super super short and I want to make it longer (need a decent development section ahhhh) while the second movement is supposed to be pure depression and Iām still trying to understand how to do it. Iām still unsure if I should go for the scherzo or the waltz for the third movement and then I want a massive finale. Letās say my ideas are pretty defined and for someone who has a very basic knowledge of theory itās a huge challenge.
That sounds amazing! Shostakovich is such a great inspiration. It sounds like this will be a very powerful and emotional piece, and it is so brave of you to make it so personal. Also you are awesome for taking on such a huge piece despite feeling like your knowledge of theory is basic! I suspect you know far more than you think you do! Sounds like it will be a great piece, I hope you keep us updated!

I believe among the pieces Iāve finished, Iāve worked the hardest on the breakfast variations. Itās a set of 7 variations on a theme I wrote while having breakfast, and the reason why I worked so hard on it was probably that just before that I had posted a piece for the first time on here and people seemed to like it! So I wanted to make the second one good too, but also it was the first time I really did like musical developement in a piece and I wanted to get better at that as well. Iām currently also working hard on one piece but Iāll talk about it once itās finished :)
Thank you for responding!!! I just checked your compositions and they are lovely! I also love that you include recordings AND sheet music, that is awesome! What kind of #composerbloggoals?? I think theme and variations is one of the trickier forms because you have to keep things fresh while working with the same theme, and you did such a good job of that! Iām excited to hear about your current piece!
