Breaking down my Ask me anything. Final Design. Anni Albers.

Here is my final design, and I am proud of how it turns out. The changes I made was changing the back cover and adding yarn balls.
Honestly, this assignment was rollercoaster of emotions, I continuously brought myself down and compare myself to others for creating amazing zines. Like @chl0wang and @katiezhou, staying up all night designing and working hard. Redesigning the whole zine and I realised I just have to believe in myself and tell myself this is good!! I am happy how turn out but it’s difficult for me at first and as designers we all work hard, we all feel stressed and exhausted but it will be all worth it. I felt like doing an old-aesthetic perfectly represented my subject.
I quote this from Walter Gropius is a quote which Anni Albers stood up and prove Walter wrong.
“It is not advisable in our experience that women work in the heavy craft areas.”
Anni Albers was the perfect subject for this assignment and I am glad I covered a Bauhaus Individual who made an impact in weaving, although she hated it at first she created her own legacy and prove that she can be an artist just like the men.
Overall, I am happy with how it turned out and I hope I can print this out and show to people what I designed. Hard work pays off.
Love your final outcome adriann!! I saw ur steps to finally achieving this outcome and you should be super proud of urself!! I can totally relate to the part where u keep comparing ur work to others. It’s great how u took the feedbacks uve gotten and apply it to ur work! Good jobb adriann!! 🤩😄
Final Zine - Ask Me Anything
After weeks of time and effort I’ve put into the zine, I finally did it! That amazing feeling of ticking it off my to-do list and close all my tabs on my laptop.
I have chosen Massimo Vignelli as my interview subject as I’ve heard about him and his work numerous times this semester. I looked him up and read about him, his concept and his works. I’m just really inspired by his style of minimalist, clean designs, the use of grids and the influence of Swiss-style graphic designs. I tried to mirror Vignelli’s previous work styles into my zine by using Helvetica and the colour of black, red and white. Yes, it seems pretty easy but it’s way harder than it sounds. There are times that I think my zine is too simple, boring, expected and basic. But the whole idea of Vignelli’s designs is the minimalist approach and timeless designs. Therefore, I constantly refer back to his previous work, do more research and get new inspirations.
The most challenging part of this project is the layout. It is hard to fit all the content and texts into a minimalist layout while being unique and creative. But I have made my way around it through adding small details and adjusting minor changes as they do make a difference!
I have learnt a lot just from this assignment through exploring, experimenting, understanding and practising. Especially the skill set that I’ve learnt by using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. I believe that I could use these practices and knowledge into my future design studies. Lastly, I just want to thank everyone who gave me feedback through the process! :)
Your zine looks amazing Chloee!!! Its been really cool seeing your work in progress and see the steps to get to your final zine! I love how it really represents Massimo Vignelli’s style and I think u did such a great job!! Oh and Im really liking the image reference page its so cool!! Its been really nice looking at your blog posts this semester Chloe!! 😄😄
Final Reflection :(
The end of the semester is here, and I have to say it went by quicker than I expected. Throughout this semester, I can say I’ve gain some very useful knowledge. I am still really new to the whole design world so I think it’s nice that the things we learned this semester are pretty easy to follow. The lectures were also fun to watch and it’s fascinating, learning about design histories. Transitioning to online classes started off pretty rocky for me but I’ve gotten used to it by now and it’s actually not bad. I sure do miss going to class for my Communication Design course, learning face2face is really cool because we can do activities like the clay activity from week 3 and do it together as a class. However, I think Bailey made learning online really enjoyable because it was interactive and we still had activities to do, she gives very helpful feedbacks on my assessments too. Overall, learning communication design this semester have been very nice and the insights I’ve gained will be very useful for my future studies!!
Also, thank you to all the people in my class! I couldn’t have asked for a better class and I hope we can meet again next semester!!! 😁
FINAL ZINE
This is my final zine!
With all the research I’ve done about Antoni Gaudí. I decided to incorporate a lot of colours into my zines, I ended up muting a lot of the colours to make it blend together better and I used a neutral colour as the background for the pages because I think Gaudí’s works have a lot of earth tones as well. I had to make a few alterations to the background on page 5 because I needed to fit the question there but I think it worked out and I quite like how the words are not arranged in a straight line. I would say I’m a beginner at using indesign because I’ve never used it before uni and I think while doing this project I managed to learn quite a lot about adobe apps so that’s nice!
Week 12
ZINE WIP
After finishing the backgrounds, I started working on the layouts!
Page 4’s layout was the one that took quite a lot of trials before I was satisfied hahaha
It was a challenge for me to place the text boxes accordingly. I wanted to convey the “inverted” part of the answer and so I had to work with the layout and change it a couple of times before I liked it hehee. I am pretty new to indesign because I’ve only started using it this semester at uni but I think while doing this project, I managed to learn quite a lot of things about indesign and that’s a great knowledge to have for my next assessments!
WEEK 12
ZINE WIP
Progressing to the last two weeks before the assessment is due. I started working on the backgrounds for my zine pages. These were some that was done in week 12.
Drawing these probably took the most effort and time. It was honestly quite exhausting to create the mosaic backgrounds. However, I really wanted to show Gaudí’s style and what I’ve gotten after doing research on his works is that they are so colourful and just so pleasing to the eyes. I really wanna go visit Barcelona just to see his works in real life and dive deeper into the mind of Antoni Gaudí. Just seeing how much details he put into his works really awed me and I can really see why he is a historically significant person in the design world. I did a few sketches and trials before this and I ended up liking this style of illustration most and I think it represents Gaudí’s work well with the mosaics, the organic shapes and the colourful colour palette with a hint of earth colours.
Project 3
After the consultations and feedbacks I’ve gotten from Ben, here is my final design. I had chosen a natural colour palette to tie the pages all together. In the pages where the interview questions are shown and written, I had decided to keep the background white to represent with the colour of a canvas. This way it’ll represent how each questions were painted and crafted on a piece of canvas. Secondly, I decided to allow the zine to have two particular characters that I am interviewing to represent the rest of the paintbrushes. This way it’ll help the audience to understand the content of my zine better and to prevent the zine being overwhelming to read. Thirdly, to show what paintbrushes create, I decided put a number of different paintbrushes strokes to both decorate the pages itself and to what paintbrushes do and make in the art/design world. Finally, I tried to make my zine to have a fun atmosphere by creating a comic of scenes of what the paintbrushes have to go through every time they’re being used and also short dialogues of the paintbrushes’ opinions in between each questions. This way, it can also show the characteristics of each paintbrushes that I was aiming on showing on my last design.
Seriously in love with the comic pages!!!! So cutee, I like how your work shows the different types of brushes Clarine! Not just traditional paintbrushes but also digital brushes hehe
WEEK 11
ZINE WIP
On our week 11 tutorial class, we discussed our progresses and had an opportunity to look at what the others are going with their zine. By then, I’ve only finished my questions and answers. So, I asked Bailey about how I could portray Gaudí style of art onto my zine. She suggested I look at his artworks and trace them to understand more about how he works and the style of his works.
These are some of the works I traced and this really helped me understand Gaudí style more. I started to get how Antoni Gaudí is really influenced by nature for his works, the shapes that are present in his works are really organic and so cool to trace. What I find really fun to do was the mosaic, it is seriously so cool to trace over it, it made me think about how long it must’ve took to assemble Gaudí’s ideas because just tracing over the mosaics took quite some time. After doing this, I had more of an idea of what I wanted to do for the background and layouts.
Zine Wrap-up
I thought that I pretty much finish my zine and it’s good to go as it is due in 2 days from now! However, the more I look at it the more wrong it gets. I forgot to mention in my last zine wip post, Bailey ask me to be aware of the page layout between the two pages as the final zine is going to be two pages facing another (it’s like when you’re reading a book you look at the layout on both of the pages). So I’ve been playing around with that since last week. I went into my last drop-in class today with Bailey to get my final feedback on my zine. And there are a few minor things that I need to change before I submit it.
Firstly, I tried to match Question 3 and Question 4 in a red background, but it just seems a bit too overwhelmed and a bit too much. [refer to the first image above] Bailey and I had a discussion about these two pages and we both agree that the red background works really well in Question 4 with it’s balance of the white rectangular graphics. However, it doesn’t work as well in Question 3. We talked about different options that I could do but sometimes if a layout doesn’t seem right or seem to work as you wish, then maybe I should just start a new page and explore a totally new layout option. Play around with it, explore different options and if I still can’t find a layout that suit this page, then I could always come back to this and make minor changes, such as size of the number, colour and lines if I need to.
Secondly, last week I added a new page to my zine cause I thought that Question 5 seems a little crammed with having the questions and answers on the same page. But when I move the number and the interview question to the seperate page, it seems like the second page is not balanced and too heavy at the bottom with all that text. [refer to the second image above] Bailey and I both really like the new page that I added, so i decided to just leave it as a blank page after Question 5 and see it as a page break before my image references.
It’s week 13 and the assignment is due in 2 days. All the feedback I received are all minor changes so I’m not too stress about the due date. But I do have to come up with a new layout option for Question 3.
I love seeing your work in progress Chloe!! I do agree that having both page 3 and page 4 red is kind of overwhelming. The page break is beautiful and so cooll, I love how it reflects Massimo Vignelli’s style really well too!! Goodluck on finishing the project!! Really interested in seeing ur final zine 👏🏻👏🏻

Beautiful art that speaks thousands of words.
WEEK 11
Antoni Gaudí
By week 11, I had finished answering the questions for my “interview with Antoni Gaudí”, but it still needs some refining for the answers.
To further understand Antoni Gaudí and his style of art, I did more research about him.
Antoni Gaudí artworks are very highly influenced by nature. He uses a lot of organic shapes in his works and I think it looks so amazing. For example, the casa battlo looks so unique and kind of mystical because of its shape and the beautiful architecture of it. Gaudí also pays a lot of attention to details, he loves working with mosaic. Using the Trencadís technique and making mosaics using pieces of ceramic shards. While researching on him, I became really interested in his mosaic works, the details, and I believe Gaudí is like the Mosaic Genius of Barcelona. I could not stop myself from looking at all the pictures of his works from all different angles because they all look so well crafted.
WEEK 10 TUTORIAL
After talking about collage artists, we were tasked to create our own collage using books/magazines that we have at home, we could also make a digital collage if we want but I wanted to actually cut and paste things in real life.
I am still stuck in my apartment because of the lockdown and I didn’t have any magazines at all. So I looked around and I found one of my old textbooks from foundation studies that I no longer use. I didn’t really have any idea on what I wanted to do so I first just started cutting all the images I could find. Then, from all the photos I decided to do a collage that would show reflection.
I looked for pictures that I think have the same gists, like the students on the top left and right corners. I then cut out letters and formed them into the word “reflection”. Overall, this activity was really fun, the materials I had was limited but I think it was fun brainstorming what I could do with such minimal resources and create something in a short amount of time.
Week 10 Tutorial
COLLAGE!!
In this week’s class, we dived into the world of photomontages. Bailey showed us collages from artists and one artist caught my attention. Hannah Höch, she is a German artist that is well known for her collages.
These are some of her photomontages. Hannah Höch is famously known for her sociopolitical messages that she displayed in her works. Like the Die Braut (The Bride), it shows a bride and groom standing but the bride’s face is covered by this confused childs face, looking around while the groom looks unbothered. It also shows signs of maternity life around the bride. I feel like this work shows the practicality of marriage and how a lot of pressure are put on women. I find her works really enchanting, how she’s able to create such amazing collages while shining light on topics she believes in. 👏🏻
