personal opinion here but can we seriously get rid of the headcanon that merlin doesn't return to camelot after arthur's death and/or is sad and in mourning for the next 1500 years.
yes yes everyone can have whatever hc they want but stuff like this just...completely implies merlin's sole purpose is arthur and as if he is not a person with feelings and experiences as well.
first of all merlin would never leave gwen to rule on her own. merlin loves gwen so much, they were there for each other throughout everything so why after arthur's death, do people feel the need to separate them.
gwen also lost her loved one. her husband, soulmate, partner and yet her grief is rarely even spoken about. gwen could not run away from the kingdom and mourn in peace. without a doubt merlin would understand the most with what she was going through.
he would go back, they would mourn together and stand beside one another. gwen would no longer be alone. of course this would not mean their grief would disappear but they would be comforted by one anothers presence and supported.
merlin would be by gwen's side till the day she died and camelot fell.
now with merlin mourning for 1500 years, of course he would mourn. he would miss and remember arthur, gwen and everyone in camelot as well as camelot itself but he would also love, be happy and experience life.
that is what grief is. and merlin is his own person.
merlin had his own experiences, his own desires and wishes and he would fulfil them. his life would not be grey with grief.
i adore the headcanons of merlin going off on his adventures, meeting people like mozart, falling in love, getting married, learning instruments, travelling the world, learning to paint, sew, sing, cook, drive etc
i just think people forget that merlin is someone.
arthur was not the only person in merlin's life and certainly never would be the only person.
