the decree is lifted — it is time for him to go.

kaedehara kazuha is a free man now, free to stay or roam. he has already delayed his departure until the irodori festival. ( held once a year, each with a different theme, this edition celebrates her favourite novels and crafts — so of course he stayed and let her talk his ears off. )

but even the most indulgent dreams end, and he must keep his promise to the crux. the alcor docks at ritou at the break of dawn, a few hours to load and unload before it sets sail again. kazuha has waited and waited, but nobody came. 

finally, he boards.

don’t be disappointed. she must be having the best dream ever.

in retrospect, it is selfish of him to wish for a farewell in person. she carries the future of watatsumi island on her shoulders, constantly overworked and sleepless. besides, what else could he say that had not been expressed in his goodbye letter?

( the time he spent on the run was a dizzying mess, days sticking together like a pitiful batch of gooey odango. with kokomi, everything is clear and defined. like neatly arranged odango, three pretty colours on each stick. )

gently, the waves take him away. 

then he sees her. dear kokomi, in her princess-like gowns, pink and purple and everything magical. she is running and yelling, waving her arm in the air. wait, wait, wait! he could hear her voice in the wind despite the distance. he almost jumps into the water.

soon, she reaches the end of the pier. anyone would have given up there, but not her. not when the sea is her domain. kazuha had seen her walk on water before, each step steady with divine grace; this time, she sprints and bolts and charges, all in a vain attempt to catch up.

it dawns on her, the futility; so the leader devises another plan.

with her palm up, fingers pointing towards the ship, she blows a bubble his way. it takes a special form, one she showed him in her favourite light novels, the adventure-filled stories with love at its core, the part both of them liked best, the brightness, the lightness, the sweet tenderness—

his heart flutters. without hesitation, he leaps towards the mast, scales it as fast as he can. from his pocket, he picks out a maple leaf, folded into a heart, waiting for this very moment.

standing at the highest point of the ship, he turns towards her, palm up like her, and sends it flying in a breeze.

an exchange of vow, if you will. let the wind be our witness.

the beginning of something, I think-

quick notes:

klavier: -can hear uncertainty due to the magic earrings but it echoes in his head so he has to wear special earplugs to dampen the effect? (they also look like custom earplugs for musicians)

-as a gameplay mechanic the beeps that play with the text sound distorted at the parts the witness feels uncertain about. the more difficult witnesses have other sounds that mask the distorted section

-pleasant normal guy. his funny trait is that he's never once considered taking the earrings off to stop the echoes

apollo: -his eyes being hidden until the end is symbolic of whatever big reveal frees him from inner turmoil

-also like him showing his true self/finally being able to face people without a facade

-he doesn't have his perceive ability (it's referenced by his earring though)

-left-handed; recently overexerted his wrist while practicing piano and has to wear a brace

-famous solo artist (indie rock genre?? idk I didn't think about that when I haphazardly threw together his outfit)

brief akihiko/haruki analysis

⚠️⚠️warning: given movie/show spoilers⚠️⚠️

so, as we know, akihiko and haruki are endgame. but may i just present to you something that really just ugh 🤌

first, we have this scene:

akihiko.. he crossed a line, a boundary. but haruki later elaborates that it’d have been completely consensual [had akihiko decided to continue.] obviously, this doesn’t make it anymore okay.

anyways, that’s not what i wanna talk about. it’s that realization that dawns on akihiko that haruki is undoubtedly, irrevocably in love with him, so much so that he didn’t mind when akihiko made a move like that.

and then he rejects him because he knows he’s not good enough; he knows that he’s still tangled up in the mess that’s ugeta, but he has to earn back haruki’s favor first. i questioned the reason he stayed even after haruki said to make sure he was gone by the morning. why wouldn’t he just run away? how could he face haruki? then it dawned on me that he couldn’t [leave] — not only cause he didn’t have a place to stay, but leaving would be equivalent to never talking about it again, leaving an emptiness in the both of them. akihiko knew that, so he likely already had it set in motion what he was gonna do. hearing mafuyu’s new song just solidified that. so, when he breaks every connection with ugeta, we know who and what he has in mind. he has to fix himself first, though.

and now, the fated scene when they finally spill their truths:

he didn’t make the decision to leave haruki and his love behind. he didn’t say “haruki deserves better, so i’m just going to completely remove myself from his life.”

no.

he became better. he became the version of himself that haruki deserved. he faced difficulties to become the man he knew he could be. he acknowledged the fact that it’s possible for them to get hurt again, but he wasn’t going to run away from their feelings.

that, to me, is the best thing about akihiko kaji.
