The Campaign Director responsible for strategy is a key member of ColorOfChange’s Leadership Team. S/he will work alongside our Campaign Directors responsible for media and campaigning, and will coordinate closely with the Executive Director on all aspects of organizational strategy. This position reports to: Executive Director
Principal Responsibilities
● Developing/thinking through campaign and organizational strategy, and advocating for it both internally and externally;
● Working with Leadership Team and advising campaign staff on every stage of the campaign arc, from:
○ Big picture strategy and messaging, to
○ Identifying strategic campaign opportunities and compelling, creative asks, to
○ Executing the email, web, and social media components of each tactic, and
○ Maintaining healthy, strong relationships with grassroots supporters over time;
● Continually revisiting/revising campaign plan in response to developments;
● Crafting advocacy emails, petitions, and other written materials including website copy;
● Day to day managing, guidance, and coaching of campaign staff, including substantive editing
and provision of other feedback on campaign staff writing;
● Developing partnerships with outside organizations for strategic campaign collaborations;
● Interfacing with organizational partners and consultants (e.g., designers, PR consultants, etc.);
● Advising Leadership Team on big picture questions of organizational development,
communications, structure, management and growth.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer who is creative, entrepreneurial, detail-oriented, flexible, and thrives in a fast-paced environment. Most of all, s/he should have a knack for campaigning: the ability to spot a moment, the willingness to go after any target, and the determination to keep pushing, even in the face of long odds. Specific qualifications include:
● 2-5 years experience in online organizing, or somewhat fewer with commensurate experience/ skills that translate well into an online organizing environment (such as those gained in political campaigning, community organizing, and/or communications);
● Strong knowledge of the political system/legislative process, particularly at the federal level;
● Deep understanding of racial justice issues;
● Excellent communication skills, including:
○ The ability to reach/speak to various communities;
○ Impeccable writing skills -- the ability to differentiate between good, very good, and
great writing; and
○ Strong understanding of the news cycle;
● Team orientation and collaborative working style;
● Experience with and love for teaching, coaching, and guiding others to fulfill their potential in
this field;
● Comfort level with technology, including databases, content management systems, blogging
platforms, basic HTML and SQL;
● Familiarity and confidence with online fundraising;
● Management experience preferred.
