“She cares deeply about what she loves, she cares deeply about Pink Diamond… She’s a very… passionate character, and the gems that are related to Pink are very passionate gems […] There’s a lot of tragedy in Jasper, and she’s not… She wasn’t doing the work she needed to do to heal, she just keeps moving forward, trying to be better than other people. That’s what I find something interesting about her.”
The ice of The Renegade’s eyes were not to be outmatched by the frigid North itself. There wasn’t an anger to the slender Gem’s face, or a wildness, it was cold and collected and a perfect copy of the hardened gaze Pearl had worn all those millennia prior while she ruthlessly cut down Homeworld Gems– Gems just like the one she was staring at now.
She doesn’t take the time to let herself see the spread of the corruption, she doesn’t allow herself even a moment to consider any aspect of what it was she was doing here beyond a simple ‘Attack, Win’ mantra. If she did, she might give, or hold back, or even worse, retreat.
“We are through, I’m just making sure it sticks.” Pearl hisses, laying on more pressure in an attempt to keep the Quartz pinned. The poles of her spears begin to warp from the pressure, the blades starting to illuminate once more in brilliant whites and subtle blues that cast harsh contrasts against the tangerine and crimson of Jasper’s face. The air around their superheated spirals steams and for a moment, Pearl can visualize her spears cleaving clean through the Hard Light of her opponent’s torso and rending the Quartz formless, even as she sees the Quartz wrap the ropes of her fingers around the staves.
This vision doesn’t last long enough to carry through.
–“Took you long enough.”

Commit a surprise attack and then encourage a chase; draw the enemy away, lead them into more favorable territory! Despite the situation, no, because of that situation, Jasper begins to shake in excitement. She wouldn’t be surprised if Pearl had set up a trap in this direction - if it meant a fiercer battle, she is more than happy to spring it.
This is what she was made for and if the Terrifying Renegade Pearl considers herself made of the same stuff as she is, this Quartz wants to see every last ounce of strength in her slender frame.
A perfect Quartz versus a simple Pearl. From the glimpses she’s seen of this Pearl, part of her wants to be proven wrong - part of her wants to lose.
But that doesn’t mean she isn’t going to give her everything she’s got! She starts attacking the trees, trying to interrupt the Gem’s escape route, and soon realizes that she’s deployed those holographic versions of herself to draw her eyes. A sound tactic - confusing the enemy - but she knows those holograms aren’t just distractions.
Jasper’s done her research. Connie has told her a lot about the Crystal Gems. Each one of these could be just as deadly as the original - if Pearl wants her attention drawn away, that’s fine!
She fells a tree with a mighty slam of her right arm, splintering it into pieces before one of the Holo-Pearls can reach it. Catching the trunk, she swings it around in a full circle before tilting up and sending it flying into the sky, parting the snow around her with the force of the wind. It spears into the mid-section of the doppelganger and scatters it into sparks. Keeping the momentum of the swing, she rolls back into a run and starts clearing trees out of her way; sometimes, she grabs a trunk and sends it tumbling through the forest, knocking down large swathes of trees in the thicket.
She has to catch her. She must.
Before she gains ground on the Pearl, she finds powerful, energy slashes slamming into her, slowing her down considerably. The first two land against her face and chest, jostling her, but she manages to dodge the third. The smoke that billows from the marks against the star on her chest makes her grin. They remind her of when Amethyst used every ounce of energy to beat on her.
Yes! Yes! Just like that! Instead of dodging, Jasper brings her arms up to defend her face as she sprints after Pearl, letting each attack collide with her. She wants to feel every particle of every attack. She wants to prove she can take everything that the Renegade can dish out. Where her comrades failed, she will succeed.
The manic grin carries her through the projectiles and she ignores the pain of her battered form. She can handle it. She can handle it! The figures in the canopy of the trees crisscross and evade her, heading in the direction of the nearest mountainside, not too far from where she first encountered the beast-like Corrupted Gems. She is going to run out of room soon, but Jasper wants to speed that up.
Channeling her own energy, the slash-like projectiles suddenly begin to be deflected as she breaks into a harsh spin, the ground quaking beneath her as the snow becomes super-heated and melts around her. She tears through the countryside, taking every tree down in her path, and one of the Holo-Pearls doesn’t manage to evade in time.
She falls into the spindash, but instead of being instantly shattered, the Quartz is ready for her landing: grabbing her by the ankle, she holds her as she continues, spinning her around and around, making the hologram part of the attack. As it begins to destabilize, she finally lets her loose and sends her flying into the canopy - slamming harshly into the third Holo-Pearl, cleaving them in two.
She can see two figures in the treeline still, obscured by the snowfall and leaves. They switch places, and again, and then the blasts come from a different angle, and then again, and again, blast, deflect, blast, deflect, and every second adding to the pile of logs littering the forest floor. One of them has to be Pearl.
Jasper has to remove this height advantage Pearl has. If she brings her down to her level, the advantage goes back in her favor. She pushes herself, moving faster and faster, some of the trees even catching fire as she bursts through them, and she is soon beginning to eclipse the Pearl’s speed.
But the problem with Jasper’s spindash is that it’s hard to maneuver when she’s generating so much force. Especially on an icy terrain.
At last, she manages cleave her way through the thicket fast enough to shatter the tree the two figures briefly use together, but stopping wasn’t calculated enough before this plan of attack. She tries to turn, straining herself, but instead she careens directly into the side of the mountain, a concussive blast echoing through the forest as she penetrates solid rock and sends a rockfall tumbling down behind her, along with mounds of snow being kicked up from the slam.
Almost like a meteor had slid along the Earth and crashed into the mountain, the impact sight leaves dozens and dozens of trees flattened, with a large, slick wake leading to it quickly being frozen over again from the cold temperatures.
Earth’s Snow was interesting, the way it blanketed things, the way it silenced things. What was amplified and what was muted seemed to be largely up to chance. That random aspect of the nature of the phenomenon made navigating the winterscape that much more taxing. Be silent. It’d been a great thousands of years since Pearl needed to be this stealthy, but if their previous encounters were anything to go by she had to be. It was of the absolute importance that she get the drop on the Quartz to level the playing field.
It would seem that Luck was on the Crystal Gem’s side, the sharp cracks of Jasper’s tree falling carrying under the weight of of the winter’s dampening. It gave a pretty good directional indicator of where she needed to be heading. Though it’d become habit at this point, a comfort, a routine, Pearl stopped breathing. She didn’t need it. The exhalation of light-warmed air was too much of a tell and interfered with the stealth of the situation. Pearl could catch her breath later, once she’d won.

Maybe she is rusty.
The blasts hit nearly simultaneously and Jasper’s world is suddenly nothing but white. For a moment, she feels nothing - she doesn’t understand what’s happened. Did she fall? She should be used to how falling feels by now, shouldn’t she?
Maybe it’s the Corruption.
She moves slowly, it feels slow, like time has all but stopped, and snow clings to her face, to her gem, as she pushes herself off the ground, ice melting from the heat emanating off of her until it’s dripping from her chin; she moves her head and snow shakes from her hair. Her mind is a furious blank, like static. That’s when the sound rushes back in, overwhelming her at first. The twin echoes of energy blasts, the sizzling sound lingering on her back as the smoke is blown by the cold wind, the crunch of the snow as she balls her fists - she’s being attacked! How could she be blindsided like this?
Maybe she isn’t trying to survive anymore.
Jasper stands and the pain stings across her back, like she’s let herself bathe in lava, but the surprise hurts more than the heat. Gritting her teeth, she tilts to look at the origin of the blasts, assuming it’s directly behind her - either the trees hide her assailant or they’ve moved, but where? She wrenches her head to and fro, searching for a Gem, since she doubts it’s a human; maybe it’s a Corrupted Gem that hasn’t been found yet. Her eyes take a moment to adjust in the harsh wind - still dazed? Shake it off, shake it off, get back in the game.
She tilts again, left leg sinking deeper in the snow than intended, the left side of her body feeling heavier than her right these days. Adjust, adjust - the thoughts from before rush back and she tries to shake them off in frustration, not realizing it’s instinct warning her as to who is the most likely person attacking her. She doesn’t want to think about-
Pearl lands on her before Jasper can twist all the way in the opposite direction to defend herself, twin spears digging into her chest as the impact sends her crashing to the ground again. The mound of snow beneath her spreads out at the fall, the force kicking up all the nearby powder and leaving a decent crater.
It’s several moments before Jasper’s brain catches up to reality. Speak of the devil, if she knew that expression, or what devils were. The blades sink in, keeping her down for the moment, but she’s not feeling that uncomfortable pain; Jasper is entirely focused on the figure on top of her. The slender Gem looks furious and focused, looking down at the Quartz not with respect, nor a sense of superiority - Jasper is her prey.
Maybe she is missing something.
She doesn’t make a move, doesn’t budge an inch. All she does is keep Pearl’s gaze, that cold, icy stare, more frosty than the wind surrounding them. Pearl is as silent as the footsteps that brought her here, of which Jasper hadn’t sensed in any aspect. By all rights, it was a perfect maneuver, a perfect attack.
Something inside Jasper warms.
Maybe she missed this.
Jasper’s blank expression slowly creeps into a wry grin. She’s not holding anything back. As far as the Quartz can tell, the Renegade has come to finish the war she started thousands of years ago. She suddenly wants nothing more than just that. She wants a fight with everything they got, a fight borne from righteous fury, a fight miles from anyone that can intervene.
Something smug inside her enjoys the moment more than it should.
“I thought we were through,” Jasper taunts her, gritting her teeth as the spears dig in a little deeper. Before the snow can melt any further beneath her, Jasper suddenly reaches up, grasping the end each spear with her mighty fists.
“Took you long enough.”
It’s the only warning she gives Pearl before she wrenches forward and launches Pearl into the sky, in the direction she came from, with all of her strength, the air straining against the sudden force and momentum. With a fast spin, Jasper rights herself and she’s on her feet again, leaving deep prints in the snow as she pushes off and starts to sprint after her old enemy, leaving a trench of snow behind her. She suddenly feels rejuvenated. She feels strong.
It was shocking how fast all of her rage came flooding back. Pearl could have continued on with her existence, carried on with ignoring Jasper’s Existence in the far north, continued training Connie and Steven for defense the world of galactic horrors that they’d been exposed to. Pearl could have never signed onto that Blue Hellsite ever again and been happy, just carried on and stayed the course, but her need to be organized had won out. Her need to read up on the changes the site was about to implement was greater than her want to just live away from the website itself.
All of these things could have happened, but now could not.
Pearl was pacing. Her feet carry her from one end of Steven’s Room to the other in long but sharp stomps. Her phone was set on the kitchen counter and the Slender Gem was focused on nothing more than trying to control the festering rage inside of her. Across the bridge of her nose, her cheeks, her forehead, her pale skin was flushed a dusty teal. She was close to muttering– close, but not quite there.
“Uhh… Pearl? Are you… okay?” A young male voice calls from the loft of his bed. Steven looks down over the ledge, half illuminated by the Video Game he’d paused to address the angry Gem. Pearl doesn’t stop pacing, she doesn’t even slow down or give any indication that she heard the Half-Gem at all. He clears his throat and calls out again. “Peaaaaaarrrrrrrl!”
This seems to catch her attention.
There is a spark of satisfaction as Pearl’s existence all but disappears from her phone. No more passive-aggressive barbs, no more annoying comments - just blissful peace and silence. It’s comforting, like falling into a snowbank before realizing you have to get up and deal with clinging snow and wet stains.
Guess Jasper finally won.
She watches her phone for a few minutes, half-expecting Pearl’s words and face to show up again, waiting for gentle yet precise insults and exasperation aimed her way. They don’t appear, of course.
The wry smile slowly slips into a passive stare. Why would they? She won. Pearl lost.
Why doesn’t it feel like a victory?
She quickly loses interest in the device, putting it away mindlessly as her thoughts drift off to something else, anything else. The sounds of the Sanctuary begin to occupy the sudden void: the familiar, gentle noises of its slumbering inhabitants, the sound of the cold winds scraping against the outside walls, and the crackle of the dying fireplace nearby her large, worn chair.
She grunts as she stirs from her spot, attracting some attention from her corrupted Gems. They watch her as she examines the fireplace quietly, pokes it with her hand, and frowns as it seems to dim. She looks off to the side at their neat pile of firewood, dismayed at the sight of the supply nearly finished. Grabbing one of the chopped up logs with a hand, she tosses it haphazardly into the flames and stokes the fire before getting up. The two beast-like Gems seem to know what she intends before she even steps toward the massive doors of the Sanctuary.
They bound up, visibly excited and bounding around her, and she’s forced to calm them down with gentle pats and pushes to keep them from putting their full weight on her when they try to put their paws on her shoulders.
“Not now,” she tells them in a muttering, but it’s not enough to deter them; they know she’s going outside to gather more firewood. It’s routine for them and they want every excuse to be out and about in the snow.
“It’s getting colder out,” she tries again to dissuade them, but they’re excuses these two have heard plenty before and it does nothing to their eagerness. Jasper’s palms grasp the doors and wrench them open, closing her eyes as the snow quickly tries to blow its way into the Sanctuary. She turns around, body-blocking the two Gems, and she shakes her head.
“...I want to be alone,” she tells them quietly, and their excited whines seem to lessen into silence, and then into soft whimpers. She watches them for a moment, where they seem torn between pursuing and staying, and she takes the choice from them. Jasper closes the doors before they can press their faces against her again. Their low whines are drowned out by the caress of the wind and a fresh blast of snowfall hits her as she turns around to face the forest.
The Quartz shakes out her hair futilely as she stalks away from the Sanctuary, heading to a nearby grove to find some trees not too far off the trail that leads to the warp. She leaves deep impressions in the snow blanketing the ground. They’re deeper than they were months ago.
She finds the decayed trees, the ones that look the driest, and uses her bare strength to fell them. It’s easy and simple busy work, that’s all it is. It isn’t even a pressing matter - she just needs something to do, to keep her mind occupied. She doesn’t want to think, needs to stop herself. Jasper knows the signs of a terrible mood on its onset, knows that if she thinks too hard about what just happened it’ll upset her. She just lets the chill set in, lets herself feel the cold wind in her hair. No thoughts, no memories, especially ones that involve a slender Gem she’s pointedly trying to forget. This place always tries to make her reflect. Not right now.
Not now.
She cleaves the logs into usable shapes with her left hand, clawed tips having grown sharper and sharper without her input. The sickly teal has spread, drowning the entire arm, like waves trying to pull her into the dark below. Spikes have formed. The discoloration has reached her shoulder, threatening to spread to her chest, back, and neck. It’s a sight she’s had time to come to terms with - not enough time, but there’s not much of that she has left. The Earth looks smaller and more distant every day.
The first trip is quiet aside from her punches and cuts and the bellow of the wind. She stacks the firewood outside the Sanctuary, deciding on a second trip so she doesn’t have to do this sooner rather than later. The wind dies down, so she focuses on the crunch of the snow underfoot, the deep prints she leaves with every step.
The trees feel coarse against her hands and falls in pieces to her might. It’s been a while since she’s been in a fight, aside from teaching Connie and Steven some tips and tricks when they hounded her enough for them.
Jasper scowls. She’s getting frustrated in the idleness. She-
Crack.
She snaps her head toward the source of the sound in the thicket, eyes watching for movement. Most of the wildlife tends to steer clear from here, given the amount of corrupted Gems that occupy the area when they’re not sleeping or lounging. Is it another bear? She personally carried all of the bears away from here.
A moment passes and she notices one of those squirrel creatures shuffle away through the snow, light enough that it barely leaves tracks in its run. Huh.
Jasper drops her guard again and sighs, running a thick hand over the back of her neck. The thoughts come back, seeing the opening they need to fill her head. She clenches her fist. Her frustration boils over and she punches a tree in half, and it does nothing to satisfy her. She runs the hand over her face, exasperated.
The end of that conversation didn’t feel like a victory because it left her lonely.
Maybe loneliness doesn’t have to be her life - but what kind of life does she even want? What kind of life does she even deserve? What kind of life can she even have? They want nothing to do with her. Even when she talks to them, it ends up terrible in some way, if Pearl is anything to go by. Pearl. She’s never met someone so vexing like that Gem. As long as she’s at odds with her, it’ll never work.
What is she even doing out here? Does she think taking care of the corrupted Gems is a noble punishment, her atonement? Is it even a punishment if she cares for them? When did she actually start caring about things, about her place on this forbidden rock?
These thoughts are annoying, uncomfortable, and ridiculous, but still she finds them rushing through her mind without end, confusing her and frustrating her. She is at a loss.
Fine! Then let me break it down for you so a Quartz of YOUR caliber can understand!
Quartz are Brutish
Quartz are Uncultured
Quartz are Delinquent
Quartz are Rude
and finally!
Quartz are Stupid!!!
And here I thought you were actually going to insult me! As if I’ve never heard any of these words out of your pretty, little lips.
At least I’m not like you.
I’m not dainty.
I’m not uppity.
I’m not boring.
I’m not prudish.
I’m definitely not as fragile either.
But you would know better than anyone else how us Quartz are like, wouldn’t you, Renegade? After all, you spent thousands of years under one.
