The fact that you think you're entitled to tip just for simply doing your job is literally why people don't tip.

Thanks for declaring you're a shitty person. Yes, in America, servers and delivery drivers are entitled to tips. This is why they're referred to as "tipped workers". This is not up for debate or discussion.

You know I've been thinking about this and maybe you're just incredibly ignorant so let me educate you and people with your thought process real quick.

You can agree delivery drivers use their cars much more than the average worker right? And with that comes the risks of the road. We need to deliver in all weather, regardless of road conditions or construction, regardless if it's Halloween and there are kids running in the road. On top of that, our cars need MUCH more maintenance than someone who just drives to and from work every day. We also need to pay an additional $100 for insurance when we use our cars for a job. And we need to pay for gas (which most places PARTIALLY cover however corporate often believes the rest should be covered by the TIPS THAT THE DRIVERS RECEIVE). All of these things are expected to be able to paid for by tips.

To put this in perspective, when I worked my old job just driving 30 minutes to work and 30 minutes from work, I needed to fill up my gas once every two weeks and needed an oil change/maintenance done on my car every 6-12 months. I've worked as a delivery driver multiple times in different areas and every time I will need to fill up on gas once a week at LEAST, and maintenance done every 3 months. Let's crunch those numbers:

$100 additional charge to insurance per month

$50-$100 additional maintenance per month ($150-$300 / 3 months)

$100-$150 additional gas every month

So not including the fact of the dangers of the road which you're arguing someone doing for you is not worth paying for, that's an additional $250-$350 per month we pay for our jobs that others wouldn't need to deal with. Assuming your work covers about $20-$30 per week for "gas and maintenance" which is pretty average among delivery jobs, you're still looking at $130-$270 per month additional costs. These are expected by the employers to be covered by tips. This is not some secret thing, they straight up tell you that.

So maybe next time instead of getting mad at the delivery driver for feeling entitled to getting tips, get mad at the corporations who tell us we're expected to make tips to cover our additional costs. Trust me, I wouldn't feel entitled to tips if I was paid enough to not need them.

So fucking tip your delivery drivers.

The term “masterpiece” originally and traditionally meant a piece of work that an apprentice or other aspiring craftsman created to show off to his master or the town’s guild. So naturally, it was intended to be the best fucking thing that you could make, demonstrating just how fucking good you are at what you’re making - 100% to flex your skills. And if it was approved, the applicant was accepted as a member of the guild and could now call himself a master, and work in this craft in this city.

So the next time you’re looking at The One Great Thing you made and think “this is it, my masterpiece, I have peaked, it’s all downhill from here”, consider looking it the other way: Making your masterpiece means you’re only getting started.
