“As a matter of fact we did,” Sarah answered easily, suppressing the urge to smile at what she assumed was Ben’s supreme embarrassment. Even with the gauzy stage robe not all that much was left to the imagination.
“But I don’t know that you’re going to like what we have to tell you. She’s safe, so at least there’s that much.”
Ben cleared his throat, keeping his gaze fixed on one of the stage steps as he spoke so he would only catch the bottom hem of the robe Morena wore in his view. “The last Linda was seen was not in the hotel room but leaving with a man,” he paced his statement to ease into it, “by choice, apparently, and into his vehicle. We’ve alerted the traffic division to track it and the owner.”
“I’m sorry, Morena,” he brought his gaze up finally to come to her eyes. “But it seems Linda has skipped town.”
“We’ll go up to inform the school for you,” Sarah told her then, glancing only briefly at Ben where he had his gaze affixed anywhere but on Morena in her scantily clad state. “So no need to worry about that. We also think that she might return there if she finds that she doesn’t like her new beau after all, so we’ll check to make certain that she hasn’t, in fact, returned to school.”
Sarah attempted an expression somewhere between comfort and sympathy.
“I’m real sorry, miss Morena.”
Morena blinked her confusion, but kept her face impassive as the police reported Linda’s whereabouts. “Leaving,” she repeated, “with a man.”
She knew it. The first opportunity to betray her, and Linda had taken it. She’d left her high and dry--
She waved off the assurance that the two cops would inform the school. As if she cared now that she was out of there.
“Which man,” the question hardly rose at the end.

Ben withered a little under her look. “I don’t think I can promise much,” he said.
“I thought the … houses of ill repute were closed down and banned,” he considered, “at least in the city. How do you think the Sicilians–if it is them,” he wavered in his certainty, “–how do you think they got it past the officials?” It was no surprise he had not noticed the type of establishment it was from the front, but he was almost certain something in a ledger book would have revealed itself higher up the line.
“Because the majority of the men in their audience are the officials,” Sarah pointed out wearily. Ben’s innocence knew no bounds some days. It would get him shot or worse.
“If they’re not in the audience, then you can bet that the other family’s money is lining their pockets. Typical.”
She nodded as a small commotion could be heard coming from the stage.
“There they are now.”
Morena shrugged into the gauzy stage robe one of her colleagues handed her and came down the back stairs with a sigh of relief. The stage lights were hot, even in next to nothing, and the temperature change to the shaded backstage area was always a little jarring without something to cover up for the transition. Shoulders and sleeves taken care of, she finished descending the stairs before she caught a glimpse of who was waiting for her.
He hesitated, unsure which role to play now that her night job was obvious to the police. Pulling some of her hair back to fill the time of her delay, she settled on a neutral expression. Ben’s lady partner seemed unsurprised, so she would take the same tack.
“Are you here because you’ve found something on the case?” she asked.

“Doesn’t matter,” Sarah pointed out, “if she couldn’t remember your address then maybe she went there to ask for it.” She handed out the pad of paper and the pencil.
Morena was being a little shifty concerning her work address. Something she wasn’t telling them, perhaps.
Ben nodded at what he interpreted to be Morena’s agreement to their search of her apartment, and watched as she set down the address in Sarah’s notebook. The numbers looked to be a unit for an SRO, complete with letters and half numbers to identify the single room in the stack of a building. If he recalled correctly, that block of Graham Street was not one of its better ones either.
“We’ll only be checking in if we can’t pick up a different lead on Linda at the hotel,” he reassured again as she finished writing down her information for them. “Right now we just need the information and for you to finish up with the desk officer.” He picked up the book himself when her pen had stopped and handed it back to Sarah.
“Yes,” Sarah agreed, accepting the book back from Ben. She looked inside surreptitiously, gaze grazing the neat writing on the page. The address for the theatre was familiar to her, but she couldn’t think why.
Pocketing the book, she frowned just a little in thought.
“Just--just find her, okay?” Morena insisted as the book left her hands. She stood up from her seat, stepping around Ben to get to the desk officer, but hesitated at the corner of the desk.
Her eyes followed the book when Sarah tucked it away into her pocket, and she bit her lip, but turned back to continue to the desk. The sooner she got this done the better, she thought, and left the two officers to it.
