I’m really curious about how ‘alien’ tropes and ‘space themes’ came into the Magical Girl Genre. They’re not something I usually see connected to Witches but they can be found everywhere in the MG genre despite it’s roots. Whereas traditional fantasy themes seem comparatively rarer. Maybe Astrology had a hand in it?

Magical girls who originate from a vague notion of “space” have actual been around since the sixties. You probably think all old-school magical girls fit the cute witch type because Sally is often credited as the first ( with roots in Bewitched ), or you may think Sally and Akko are the only magical girls of the sixties because they received animated adaptions. But Mitsuteru Yokoyama, author of Sally’s manga, also created another magical girl following Sally’s debut. This magical girl is Comet who is slightly older then Sally who has traveled from another planet and works on Earth as an housekeeper.

While she did not receive an animated adaption until the 21st Century, she starred in her own live action television serial in 1967, as well as another in 1978.
