The sound of my keys sliding into the lock fills me with the sense of relief I've been dreaming of since this morning. I move my tired, sore body through the kitchen, dropping my bag on the counter with a thud before I find the comfort of the soft couch. I flop down unceremoniously with a groan of relief only an exhausted nurse such as myself could make. Just as my eyes flutter closed and my muscles finally relax I jolt up- jumping to my feet faster than I had when the alarm of a code blue rang through my ears hours earlier. The apartment, small but cozy is oddly quiet, even the creaking of the old building stills as I try to understand what's different. I move through the apartment, searching each room carefully, holding my breath each time a shadow looks a little too alive. I find the door knob to my room- I didn't close it when I left this morning. Now it's closed, hiding whatever monsters my mind makes up as I work up the courage to open the door. I take a deep breath and suddenly whip the door open, yelling bloody murder- as if that would do anything except make the potential intruder shit their pants.....Or stare at me in startled confusion. Finally once my eyes settle and my screaming stops it grows dead silent. My eyes drift from corner to corner but there's nothing, confusion and fear fills me before I feel a sudden cold breeze that makes my bones chill, I turn......the window I left the window open. The breeze managed to close my flimsy door and I actually thought some weirdo creep decided to break in. I move and close the window before I decide it's a monster and scream over nothing again. As my hands grip the cold frame and slide the window down my eyes catch someone else's. A young man, a little rugged maybe, seemingly athletic in what looks like running gear and.... He's... Staring at me with more concern than I'd expect from an apparent stranger. Had he heard my scream? I feel my cheeks warm and I swiftly slam the window down, closing the curtains and sliding down the wall. Of course I managed to embarrass myself with a random stranger on the street. Just my luck.
This is a random idea I had I hope it's an alright short story, if anyone has any criticism with my writing style I'd love to hear it. Thank you.
