suddenly i’m a little kid again,

crying into my knees.

i still remember the heat

of the summer sun beating down

on my back and neck,

my head tucked between my legs,

the smell of the strawberry patch

and rocks and dirt.

the feeling of shame

and abandonment.

i just wanna go to my Tia’s,

where the trees shade the pool,

and the grass is dense,

and the cool ground feels refreshing

against my bare feet.

no shame there.

no strawberries.

just the smell of Tia’s garden.

lavender, sunflowers,

black eyed susans.

chlorine scent in my hair,

dust from Uncle’s work shop,

smell of news papers,

Folgers with vanilla coffee creamer.

Cardinals game playing on the tv,

soft smell of a cigarette lingering

from moments before.

wind chimes.

someone honks at another driver

on Rt. 3.
