Semiotics

What is the technique? Lighting model from behind with golden colour lighting and styling. Appears to have been shot in a place of heritage, with chandeliers in the background. Golden colour within the image relates to the golden colour of the perfume bottle.

What is the effect? Creates an impression of luxury, as the gold colour is associated with wealth and power.

What is the effect on the audience? The audience are persuaded to buy the product, due to them being encouaged to want to be a part of this luxurious brand and may be made to feel that if they buy the perfume they will be like the model in the advert.

What else could it symbolise? Could symbolise a more deeper empowerment of women, with the model representing a sense of wealth and with that comes the association of power.

Studio - Echo Project

With this image we attempted to recreate the well known image of Sting, shot by the photographer Ray Burmiston. To do this we had two lights lighting a white backdrop and then one light lighting the model directly from the front. I feel that this hasn't been as successful as I would have liked, due to there not being enough light hitting the left side of the models face and not quite achieving the correct expression. In terms of position we have framed the image well, with the model looking directly straight at the camera. However, it is noticeable that in the original image by Burmiston he has shot much closer in, with less of the shoulders shown.

Studio - Echo Project

He we tried to recreate the classic image of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany's. To do this we used two kicker lights, which lit the side of the models face and then a large softbox lighting the model face on. I feel that we have been successful in achieving the correct lighting, as we have the shadows and highlights in all the right places. However, to improve this image we would need to style the model more appropriately and have a more detailed background.

With this image we chose to recreate a shot by Irvinn Penn, taken in the 1950s on film. With this image we identified that we needed soft lighting, so set up one simple large fish fryer facing to the right of the model. The hardest part about recreating this image was trying to get the pose and position of the model the same as in Penn's photograph.

Studio Techniques - The Echo Workshop 2

For this project our brief is to produce images that reinterpret known, important photographic images. To do this we will demonstrate the use of studio techniques, through portraiture with the use of a camera format of our choice (analogue or digital). 

With the above image we chose to recreate a portrait shot of Michael Caine by the renowned studio photographer, David Bailey. To do this we first had to identify the type of lighting used and the directionality of the light (3x lights lighting subject from the left and background). We then had to work to try and recreate the exact pose and position of Michael Caine in the David Bailey photograph, so that we could produce the exact echo of the image. Above is the worksheet detailing the steps we went through to recreate the image.

Final Evaluation

Throughout this project my main aim was to explore the idea of documenting a space, but in an artistic and creative way. By choosing to photograph the allotments I wanted to be able to portray a sense of personality, that could come through from each individuals own plot. The main message I wanted to convey through my work was the idea of individual characteristics being displayed through the imagery, without the individual person being present.

Creating my initial concept board has been the most useful piece of research, as it enabled me to pinpoint key photographers and also colours that could be associated with my work. I also found my in depth research into photographers such as, Simone Nieweg and Thomas Struth particularly useful, as both their work has a similar relation to my ow, so provided a direct link. Lighting was a key technique that I focused on within this project, as I chose to shoot in the late evening and in low-light conditions to create the cold colours that were a prominent feature of my work. Formal elements have also been prominent in my work throughout this project, with a particular focus on colour, form and line. Within my imagery I would try to build up different layers of colours and tones, whilst drawing attention to some of the patterns featured within the shots.

Overall I feel that my final set of images has successfully conveyed my intended message, through the way that they have portrayed the space in quite an abstract way, whilst also focusing on details that portray the individuals activity. To improve this project or if I was going to expand on it I would explore looking more intensely at each persons plot and maybe speak to people, so I could ask to photograph their own personal belongings and within the sheds of the individuals.

Large Format - Movements Exercise

To create this image we used a variety of large format camera movements including, front tilt in, back tilt in and slide back left. By doing this it has produced an image with quite distorted features and characteristics. As you can see we have created it so that one half of the models face is blurred and the model has also been slightly distorted to create the effect of her having a smaller head in comparison to her body.

Research Exercise - Robert Misrach: Desert Cantos

What did they tend to photograph:  Robert Misrach is predominantly a landscape photographer who centred his series titled; 'desert cantos' on capturing and exploring the landscapes of the American Southwest. His main focus of work is on desert landscapes and he often photographs them from a very wide point of view. 

How did they achieve their results:  Robert Misrach is a contemporary photographer and his work spanned 25 years, with him beginning the project in 1979 using a Deardroff 8x10 large format camera. Misrach is interesting in that he specifically chooses to shoot using colour film, which completely compliments and adds to the mood he wants to portray from his images. 

What do the images suggest?  The main aim behind Misrach's work is to explore man's ongoing relationship with the environment and his images suggest how the human species leaves strong footprints on the environment. To do this he will often produce images which feature either people (above) or other human elements such as a lone telephone pole or a train. Robert Misrach then cleverly contrasts these images with dramatic landscape shots of the environment, so you can draw a direct link between the two and observe the clear message that he is trying to get across.

Research Exercise - Richard Avedon: In the American West

What did they tend to photograph? (desribe the images) Richard Avedon carried out a project titled 'in the American West', where he photographed 'Westerners' in a simple portraiture manner. Within the project he photographs a variety of people of different ages and backgrounds, but continues to often shoot them looking very straight on and serious. 

How did they achieve their results? Richard Avedon shot using a large format camera, with black and white film. In the time he was photographing this series (1979) colour film was widely available, but his large, black and white prints have a stronger impact on the viewer. 

What do the images suggest?  Each of his portraits are clever in the way that they are able to tell a story about the individual, even though they have been shot completely out of their environment. His images largely suggest the brutal truth regarding the Western society, through shooting people covered in blood, dirt etc. In the example shown (above) he has captured a young boy holding a gun, which is quite a shocking and abnormal scene. The image leaves you wondering as a viewer, as to how he has got in that situation and you want to know more about the individual within the image.
