âWeâre having a boodle fightâ was my answer when the cashier asks me what was I going to do with 10 lbs of seafood. I smiled at her confused face, realizing how I made no sense at all.
When my friendâs caucasian husband found out that we are having a boodle fight at their house, he instantly became worried. Especially, after seeing all the food prepared and laid at the table which looks like something weâd pick up and throw at each other. âSo, how are yâall going to fight with food?!â, he said.
We know, a âfightâ and a lot of food do not go well together, so let me help you understand if youâre still as confused as them.
Boodle means a great quantity, in this case, food. Philippine has this tradition for the hungry military cadet to gather over a huge pile of food without dishes and utensils involved. The food is usually served on banana leaves covering a long table. Since theyâre hungry, it would look like theyâre fighting over the food, thus the term âfightâ is in the name. Thereâs usually a big jug of water to wash their hands with as they will be using it bare at the fight because theyâd need it for the âfightâ where slow-eaters are unwelcome.
Nowadays, boodle fight has become a popular gathering for family and friends. In our case, we did potluck-style by asking everyone to bring a dish to share, usually grilled or fried. Some of the popular dishes that are usually brought is fried fish, grilled pork belly, grilled squid, sauteed shrimp, and green mangoes. But the sky is the limit here, so basically bring anything you want and fight on!
Here was our boodle fight.
