Project Reflection

The crit went a lot better than I thought it would. I found I had a lot more positive things to say about my image than most crits, and I wasn't really critised for my photoshop skills. From the feedback, I would definitely start off with a less ambitious concept. I feel that by having such a concept there was no room for development so naturally it would fall apart. I was pleasantly surprised to see that my final image looked a lot better when printed, naturally I saw the faults in the image but they largely went unnoticed. I do think I need to think before I speak sometimes, as I word vomitted everywhere for the first 4 minutes and should probably write what I want to say down, as I think it in my head before then my mind goes blank as soon as I stand up. I learned that if I ever did a similar project again I should think more and structure and plan a lot better than I did. Editing wise I probably would of created more interesting digital paints with a bit more depth and focus on making the screens I put in a bit more effective and believable. It was great to get other peoples view from the class and it was a reassuring crit that I may not be the worst photographer on the planet and that I definitely over criticize my myself too much before crits.

Evaluation.

When we first got the project brief I was really looking forward to the project. I had so many great ideas that I wanted to do, and I thought I would go all out and do something completely different to what I’ve done before. But, I was quite disappointed with the result. My organisation skills are near to none, and when it came to composing me to organise the project and the shoots I required I got myself in a flap.

I decided to use myself as a model in the end. Although it probably wasn’t the most effective way of showing my idea, it was a lot easier than bending over backwards for a model. I organised a couple of shoots with different people and was cancelled on both times, and I just had enough and decided to improvise. I actual really enjoy photographing myself, not in a vain way, but for the sense of complete control. I think if I had gone a bit more overboard and had a bit more self confidence in my idea I would have styled myself properly and created something really interesting.

A mistake I made was not changing my idea earlier on when things started to go wrong. If I had changed my idea I think I could have created something a lot simpler, and although I am happy with the results now, I would be a little happier if I had done something else I think.

For the shoots I decided to photograph myself, as I had arranged shoots twice and been cancelled on and to be honest, I got completely fed up and tried to improvise. I actually enjoyed the shoot, I was fun having complete control over the work, I wish I had done another shoot maybe with make up and proper styling but I think the results were good.

I went to the City of London to take my photos and I was really happy with the results, although it was made to my attention that I should of made them more imposing and wider framed as a lot of the shots were too close up. But I was still happy with the shoot and I didn’t think it needed changing.

What I loved as well, was discovering how much I love using the pen boards to draw over images and make them into more graphic pop arty style images. Using tone of the colours I had a lot of fun creating these weird images and I want to continue that.

What I did love about the project is how much I learnt about photoshop, before I was clueless about masks and I used them for this project, on practically everything whilst editing the layers in. I also learnt about colour correction which was interesting. I learnt a lot more skills in the photoshop over the course of this project than I did in the rest of the year.

Overall, I enjoyed the project but I would be a lot happier with the results if I had changed my idea mid way and done something simpler and more graphic, but I am happy with the final, because it represents how much I learnt and that I discovered a new interest in digital painting.

Not quite final image, needs a little cleaning here and there, my final is currently on my hard drive which I can't access on this computer. So this is just a visual reference of what my final pretty much will look like, except for the far right cigarette advertisement. I don't really like it that much, I would of rather of used the other image with the circular glass, despite the amount of blank space it was more visually interesting. I don't hate it though, just could be a lot better, in the final i cleaned up the edges of the 'screens' as sometimes they looked disgustingly wrong.

Something I had to do was edit the sky, as it was pure white. I made new layers underneath with high curves and used the masking tool on the editing layer to bring out the richer sky below. I like it, it has a nice HDR quality about it.

I used an inversed curve layer and mask on a different layer of the background to fix the white glass on the upper level of the image.

I used warp tools, and transformation tools to slot the images between panes of glass and and lower the opacity to make them more futuristic screen looking. I added monochromatic noise to the individual screens to make them a little more genuine.

I think there will be a lot of flaws in the image, a lot of the time i was working on mask layers using a 1 px brush to brush in and out the screens, but because it is being printed the size of Jupiter it will possibly be very noticeable I did check the image at 100% and it seemed ok.

Unedited or manipulated images I used to contribute to the final image. They were mainly templates for shapes such as facial features.

I drew the mouth separately of a different photo of mine and added it into the other cartoon image over the top to keep consistency, of the head shape.

British cigarette, I wanted to add something more than faces, so show this movement of advertising and propaganda had infected more aspects of life. I also liked the idea of showing the attitude of the place, that large cigarette advertisements are acceptable. I did want to add text on to the images I made, but it looked really tacky. Half the fonts may as well of been comic sans, and I couldn't find any fonts I liked online to use. So I settled with black advertisements This wasn't the final one placed in, I filled in the colours a lot better and the lines were neater, I just don't have the complete final of this on me. But this is practically it.

More images off the blog of Postcards of the future. The Thames frozen over to represent climate change, and others represent bleak visions of chaotic weather. It's interesting to see unusual things in London that do occur around the world. It brings problems people face else where closer to home.

I found these collection of photographs on a web page called 'postcards from the future'. They're compilations of photographs, some they're own, and others who are credited on their website. They each come with little captions detailing responses to issues in today's world, with the effects on London shown in their edits. Such as issues of rising flood waters in London, climate change, and the global problem of food and becoming self sufficient. I found them interesting, it was a cool contrast between this first world city, and many third world problems. I liked them as well as i would be photographing and editing images of London, and felt they were a good reference for what people do to the city.

contact for person shoot. I took them in mind of the editing I wanted to do. I also took some of a bear and a pill to maybe create some advertisements to add in more a feel to image. I used my flashgun/speedlight thing when I was taking them to define the features more and create a sharper image. As I was taking them I mainly thought about how I was planning to over edit them into more graphic looking images, using over the top facial expressions ete

Forgot to upload contacts from shoots. Second location shoot, I prefer these a lot better, but now i realise too late that I should of thought about the composition more, as I forgot that I can't really crop them as they're being printed so large. I was happy with the location though, I went to Exchange House in the city for it's glass and metal, it's modern steampunk feel. It feels like a really dark oppressive monument underneath so I went and shot it because I thought it would look good.

just a test now, as i'm choosing a better landscape image to use. But put into the practice, the images integrated achieve more of what i wanted them to.

I used the warp and cmd+t tool to re size and curve the images one by one into the panels. I was going to include more images to create more of a story about this world, but am now using a better image for the final. I used curves just on the background layer to make them stand out a little more.

I like it, but more emphasis on the curved glass dome thing was required for my idea, as there is too much empty space here.

trying out an idea for making the images more screen like before i intergrate them. I chose to just photograph myself, partly because I have an oddly shaped face and elastic skin, but also because other human beings prove to be unreliable and to be honest, it's a lot more fun having complete control. I'm not 'modelling' as per say as i am not a model, i'm just using myself to get what I want. I've done it before and really enjoyed the results. I might do another shoot and add more physical effects. Leaving it late, but this was a good go.

I used spot healing for imperfections and the crop tool to resize the image better and get rid of the shoulders to make it more face orientated. I used a 50% and black and white brushes to lighten teeth and whites of the eyes to a more creepy effect.

I added noise with the gaussain option ticked, as when integrated into the larger image it looks more screen like.

I then used two blue, cyan colour like fills, and then used the blending feature to overlay them nicely.

I'm not 100% happy with the results so far, but I'm doing what I want to do.
