A night for ghosts, spirits, and reflection — on life.
Sometimes we wonder, if we could ever have changed anything... what would it be?
I’d stop him —
me —
from taking my sister out on the ice that day.
If I could tell that boy anything...
I’d tell him he was gonna die.
I’d tell him the ice isn’t worth it.
I’d tell him that what comes next is lonelier than he could ever imagine.
I’d tell him his mother would find no end to her grief all winter,
and his sister would be helpless to console her.
That his little sister would grow up thinking it was her fault,
and would live without her big brother by her side.
I’d tell him he wouldn’t know about them —
or himself —
for centuries.
And that he would never get to say goodbye
to his mother and sister —
nor they, to him.

Podivná noc, co?
Noc pro duchy, duše a zamyšlení – nad životem.
Někdy si říkáme, kdybychom někdy mohli něco změnit… co by to bylo?
Zastavila bych ho –
mně –
v tom dni, abych nevzal mou sestru na led.
Kdybych tomu chlapci mohla cokoli říct…
Řekl bych mu, že zemře.
Řekl bych mu, že ten led za to nestojí.
Řekl bych mu, že to, co přijde potom, bude osamělejší, než si kdy dokáže představit.
Řekl bych mu, že jeho matka celou zimu nenajde konec svého zármutku, a jeho sestra ji nebude moci utěšit.
Že jeho malá sestra vyroste v domnění, že je to její chyba,
a bude žít bez svého staršího bratra po boku.
Řekl bych mu, že se o nich –
ani o sebe –
nebude vědět po staletí.
A že se nikdy nebude moci rozloučit
se svou matkou a sestrou –
ani ony s ním.
