Yes, the castle is very fitting for Jack. He rests a lot compared to me and Huw (but, seriously, you can’t blame him when you look at the size of his fins). Because the ornament is so tall, he has yet another surface to rest upon near the surface when he does. It’s the perfect height for it. :)

Hey fishy friends, I have a question.
Today this guy at work bought some distilled water, and he told me it goes in his fish tank and that he doesn’t have to condition it since it’s distilled… Is it safe to put my bettas in distilled water without conditioning it? Water changes are a long process, although necessary. I was wondering if it would be safe to put them in distilled at the proper temperature.
Help?
Why would conditioning the water make the water changing process any longer? The products make it safe for your fish to be immediately added to the aquarium. Meanwhile, if you don’t use conditioner, you have to let the water sit for 24 hours before it can be deemed as safe.
And, no, distilled water is NOT safe for aquarium use.
Plus, even letting water sit for 24 hours doesn't remove all the elements that water conditioner will remove, such as heavy metals. Distilled water is actually dangerous because of the way it affects pH levels. Tap water plus water conditioner is the way to go! :)
If you're using the proper type of water conditioner, you can let the water sit for a few minutes just to be sure that the conditioner has made the water safe, but it doesn't need to sit for 24 hours.

What’s the note about sunlight for? Natural light is a-ok for fish; they fare well in it. The only issue would be if the fish was too close to a window (drafty) or if the sun heavily influenced the tanks temperature.
My owner tends to put the note there in case anyone does think that we are indeed set too close to a drafty window or exposed to sunlight long enough to influence tank temperatures (neither of which is the case). It’s just a bit of added assurance for her sake in case anyone gets iffy. :)
The sunlight does tend to influence our tanks' temperature particularly quickly in the summer, which is why our owners only use it to take pictures. It has also caused ridiculous algae last summer, so we don't recommend leaving tanks in sunny areas.

From what I gather, this is pretty common. My most recent tail-biting happened when my tank was covered and in darkness for a few days as a preventative quarantine measure. I don't like the darkness, and I protest when they fast me... and sometimes I do it just because. I'm sure your little guy will recover soon!
Oh dear, I shouldn't have teased Jack about his nippy tendencies, Now Eridan's doing it too. He partially nipped off his first two dorsal rays. Jacky, have you ever stopped nipping? And how long does it take for your rays to grow back?
Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that! I do sometimes stop nipping for a while, then nip again when I'm anxious, bored, or... seemingly at random. My owners can't quite figure it out. Depending on the severity and location of the nipping, once I've stopped, my owners can usually see clear fin within a week and it will grow back in a few weeks.
I hope Eridan sees sense and stops nibbling his fins. It's such a bad habit for us!
I ended up finding those pages anyway. :D We have our fish, he's a beautiful red veil tail named Sousuke! He's very lively and has been quite content in his new home.

Oh, dude, I really need to get a bigger tank. Its one of the cheapy 1gal from Aqueon. It has a filter and a light, but I think Sakana is begining to feel a tad crowded with the way he swims around. D:
Yes, it's definitely important to get a new tank as soon as possible. The filter is good, but this tank is too small to safely heat and the tank would still require very frequent water changes.
My owners got my 3-gallon and 5-gallon tanks at Walmart for under $40, and it's even cheaper in the US. It's definitely worth investing in a new tank so you can make Sakana happy and healthy, plus get to see more of his personality! :) If you have limited space, 3 gallons would be fine, but a 5-gallon tank is perfect for one betta.
Yay! I have now figured out how to enable email notifications when I get replies and messages. I'll hear the notifications ding when I'm hiding behind my filter or in my castle (which is quite a lot of the time, especially when my owners get their cameras out). Chatting with people will be much easier now. :)
Hey there! My son is getting a betta for his birthday. I have a nice big tank and filter already, but what are some other things I should get? Water conditioners? What sort of plants? Any medicines I should have on hand for the fishy in case he has problems?

Hello! :) If you're not sure how big the tank is, you can calculate it! Is it a rectangular or square tank? If so, here's a neat calculator to help you: http://www.firsttankguide.net/calculator.php Let me know what it says your tank is or if it's a bowl and I can let you know if the tank is the right size.
You're right, it's important to have a tank the right size for your baby! Three to five gallons is usually best. I love my five-gallon tank, and if I ever feel overwhelmed, I go swim behind the filter or into a plant or into my castle and hide. :)
This is how much my fins and scales have changed since Sunday... four days can be a long time for a marble gene to do its magic!
