how the duffer brothers prolly feel after using their lesbian couple that went nowhere as a plot device for their gay couple that went nowhere and then used their gay characters feelings for his best friend as a plot device for their straight couple that went nowhere

long hair el ohhhhhhhhhhh
platonic my ass
rip mike wheeler you really could have it all
what really gets me is that they colour coded mike in blue and will in yellow, and people still talk about it like it’s just wardrobe. in film and television, colour is not an afterthought. it’s a narrative technology. it’s where the truth leaks out when the script can’t say it.
blue on mike is repression made visible. blue is the colour of characters who are performing themselves, who are holding their breath emotionally, who are terrified of what happens if they stop playing the role they’ve been assigned. it’s distance, self containment, the safety of the script. mike in blue is the boy who’s been told who he’s supposed to be and is clinging to that identity even as it stops fitting him. blue is the armour.
yellow on will is the opposite: exposure, vulnerability, illumination. yellow is the colour of characters who carry emotional truth like a lantern, even when it scorches them. it’s the colour of awakening, the moment the story stops lying to itself. will in yellow is the boy who already knows, who feels everything, who has stepped into the truth long before anyone else dares to. yellow is the light source.
and when you put blue mike and yellow will together, you’re not just pairing complementary colours. you’re staging a visual confession. blue is the fear; yellow is the feeling. blue is the closed door; yellow is the hand on the handle. blue is the script; yellow is the story trying to break through it.
this is where it gets almost funny, if it weren’t so devastating: the colours were telling the story the script was too scared to name. the production design was doing the emotional heavy lifting the dialogue kept dodging. the palette is braver than the text.
because you don’t sustain a blue/yellow motif over multiple seasons, across key emotional beats, across character arcs, across moments of rupture and revelation, unless it’s intentional. unless it’s thematic. unless it’s the visual department quietly saying, “fine, if the script won’t say it, we will.”
colour is text. and blue mike / yellow will is the clearest sentence in the whole show.

if this scene is
“was I scary?”
“No, you were beautiful.”

This is what Vecna saw in Will's mind, trust
me walking to the bathroom at 3am in a massively oversized shirt, using gay fanfic on my phone to light the way
99% chance it’s a byler one too
people don’t enjoy shipping anymore. the point of shipping isn’t the catharsis of watching them kiss onscreen, it’s grabbing the characters and mashing their faces together like you’re five years old playing Barbie in your room again. it’s to take one moment of eye contact in canon and read that over and over and over again with twenty different writers’ interpretations of the characters internal monologues if they were in love. it’s to see the characters interact and cheer because you know that’s another moment to add to your list of canon compliant fic ideas. you’re stressing yourself out, this is supposed to be fun!
nothing will hit more than the transition between little wiw casting a spell on the audience and it opening back up to mike. aka casting protection on mike. GOD
cant stop thinking abt how much i need to punch the duffer brothers in the nose and knee them in the balls and maybe probably kill them actually i need them gone incompetent egotistical delusional motherfuckers GOD i have been IRRITATED for DAYS
"mikes gonna hear good luck babe in 40 years and lose his mind" "mikes gonna hear conan gray in 40 years and go crazy" mike is gonna watch dead poets society like a week after will leaves hawkins and in a fit of insanity is going to fly to new york and show up at his door unannounced like the messy gay disaster that he is
