One thing you can do to get started on learning to repair something is to go see what resources are available at your local public library!

Recently, my library had a workshop on basic bicycle maintenance and repair. They also have free access to SAMS Technical Publishing manualsalong with other databases and websites to learn skills and trades on your own, at your own pace. And this is all free! All you need is a library card, and that should be free, too!
