This was inspired by Urban’s “magic flower cereal”, an old post that I can’t manage to find again so I tried recreating the marshmallows from memory.
Both the spoon and the bowl are based off of ones I used to use as a kid, they’re very nostalgic for me.
PSA that specific pattern on the bowl is called Corelle spring blossom green and if you ate off of those dishes as a kid (or as an adult) then you were exposed to dangerous levels of lead in the paint. More info on that here if you’re interested
I finally manage to get a proper ref sheet for my dream tripper OC!
The art is mine but the design is by @urbanqhoul, as is Dream Trippers and Whimsy’s REM World.
Lore and facts below the cut
Overhead:
-Any pronouns
-Loves pumpkins and all verities thereof, favorite verities being Porcelain doll and Baby-boos.
-Seems cool, calm, and collected on the outside, does well in a crisis, but is actually a neurotic mess internally.
-Light and sound sensitive, uses pumpkin to dull senses to it to make them tolerable during the day/when visiting the city.
-Head always on fire unless actively wet. Likes water and swimming because of this.
-Lives on a pumpkin patch on the outskirts of the city
-By day makes pumpkin related products (baked, stuffed, pumpkin soup, pies, breads, dried leather strips, muffins, cake, etc)
-Takes the mobile stand to the city to set up shop to sell the goods. However this is mostly just an excuse to talk to people. Real goal is to collect information.
-Woke up in REM and was amazed, wanted to learn all about it. Started creating an archive of information as well as an extensive search engine for it hosted locally in the basement of the house.
-Made a calendar to keep track of what happened when, counting days from first arrival. Own calendar is not accurate at all because of forgetting to update it for days at a time.
-Makes physical notes while running the stand that are then recorded in detail once home. The notes are often shorthand and are completely nonsensical, even to Jack after a few days, their only propose is to remember enough upon returning home to write a full description.
-Has no idea what is considered important information or not. Keeps notes and records of everything from what the weather was like on a particular day, hex code colour of the sky that day, local gossip, current events that is heard at the stand, and who bought what that day, are all considered the same level of importance and archived in the sprawling archive.
House:
-Bigass hole rain keeps coming down in
-Rope ladder to get to lower floor
-Small pond where rain water settles that never goes away
-Uses a hammock for a computer chair because keeps falling asleep at the desk anyway so doesn’t bother with a proper bed
-Keeps carving slots in the walls to hold hard drives, the house keeps growing back over them. They still connect to the computer so it’s considered “extra security” and tries not to worry too much about what happens when they need maintenance. Randomly finds more hard drives when cutting open pumpkins for the stand.
-Not just a digital hoarder, lower level is full of stuff. Equal parts keepsakes and trash. keeps waking up covered in pill bugs and ladybirds that live among the garbage.
-Jack talks to the bugs sometimes to get the thoughts out and one that talks back. Has a deep recognition of the voice but cannot place it, low key worries Dennis isn’t talking back at all and he’s nothing more than a manifestation of mental illness. He often hitches a ride inside the pumpkin head much to Jack’s Chagrin.
This started off as just me going “Coda would look good in a body chain” that ended up with a bunch of my friends going “they look like he’s posing for the cover of vogue”
which lead to me to designing a whole REM magazine. First time that media design course I took in college has really paid off.
though I did cheat a little since forget-me-nots, daisies, and birch trees are already present in the series and play well into the themes presented, so all I’ve really brought to the table are the hyacinth and the bramble flowers which I choose based on my own interpretation of the series and its themes.
The meaning of each plant from foreground to background:
Purple hyacinth: sorrow, regret, and apologies.
Daisy: innocence, true love, and new beginnings. (Fantastic representation in Whimsy)
Birch tree: purification, renewal, new beginnings.
Forget-me-not: enduring affection, memory, and loyalty (again, fabulous representation in Angel)
Bramble flowers: resilience, protection, love, and misfortune
I went into this as just a simple fanart of coda then went “well he can’t just be standing there in the void. I got a whole folder of backgrounds I’ve saved over the years I should actually put that to use and see if I get inspired.”
And man oh man did I get inspired. I had fun doing this piece and I just. Kept going. For like 2 weeks and here we are!
Every pice of art I’ve done in the last decade and a half I’ve done the sketch on physical paper then scanned that to work off of digitally. Finally got to the point I decided to test out sketching digitally as well and as you can see it’s gone swimmingly! The shading is a little messy but overall I’m quite proud with how this turned out considering how much anxiety I had going in.
The wonderful test subject for this is my character Charlie, who I designed back in 2021 then proceeded to do nothing with for half a decade until this shining opportunity came along.
>:O Angel doing fancy ass acrobatics with his hair make me irrationally happy look at em gO
Also v accurate whimsy he would infact try to to mimic and immediately get tangled
This one nearly killed me but! I came out victorious in the end! There was originally going to be a lot more detail in the clothes and all the books on the shelves but I got lazy at the tail end of this. All the stuff on the shelves are all stuff I currently own on my actual cluttered shelves. (Or used to own in the case of the CRT TV)
The marshmallow head aspect of Jack’s design was done by @urbanqhoul
When I was a kid sometimes my grandparents would rent a room at a hotel just so my cousins and I could use the hotel’s indoor pool. It was a surreal experience going swimming when snow caked the windows. Of course the hotel pool was not nearly as nice or ambient as this one but still.
My persona got a design update! I tried something new with textured shading with this one and I’m not too thrilled about the results, maybe one day I’ll revisit it but for now I’m calling it done.
