Rob finally bought a Marshall for the studio, after us telling him that he needs a workhorse rock amp. Got this JCM800 Lead combo. It's one of the diode ones, which is supposed to suck, but people out diodes in front of amps all the time with their pedals, so who cares? Sounds great, so I'm happy. We're using it as a head here, and the 4x12 1960A cab. Also used the Music Man HD130 for the first time on a record, instead of my Selmer. I use a clean amp, so this made sense to try. Took some fiddling, but it's pretty gnarly as a pedal platform.

(Come Play With Me)
Esper Scout have released a stream for the song that they tracked with me towards the end of last year as part of the Come Play With Me label release. Had a blast tracking this, glad to finally hear what they did with the mix!
Launch show for the split with ZoZo is on the 26th of May, get down if you’re local to Leeds.
HOLY MOLY! 'THINK SHARP KID' got played by Huw Stephens last night on BBC Radio 1 listen at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b077jfp4#playt=2h29m15s …...

I’M A BIT EXCITED, CAN YOU TELL?
So, last week I visited the University of Huddersfield to track an album in 4 days, which was chaos. Luckily it's pretty stripped back and raw anytime that I work with CN, but it's still a bit full on each time. We had a choice of two Steinways (one full concert, was a bit too toppy for CN) and a Broadway (a bit hard) to choose from, and an incredible sounding room. I had access to DPA's, the C12 reissue, Coles, Schoeps, Telefunken's, all sorts of crazy gear. Tracked on an AWS for the first time, lovely desk, of a bit of a headache to dive into after getting used to the MCI for so long. I usually do about 1 project with CN a year. Invariably, it's the most musically challenging, creatively free project that I do all year, and I always look forward to them.
Get to play on an AWS today! I don't know what I'm doing! #getyermanualsout4thelads
... One trick I love is to roll the tone control down, and push up the gain and highs on the amp to compensate. This way, the amp generates the harmonics, rather than the instrument, and you get a very thick tone to blend underneath, especially with a neck pickup (props to Kurt Ballou for that trick, read it in Tape Op years ago, now a staple technique). … A little while back I posted this, now have an example of it to show you. Admittedly, this is a slightly extreme version, as instead of more amp gain I’m using a hyper fuzz that absolutely cannot handle chords, but it’s a similar theory.
Little bit of rig testing while I kill time. Playing this makes me sad I can't run it hot for live shows, absolutely screams when you open up the volume a bit.

Not long after testing my new pedal rig, pushed my amp harder than I should have, blew the right two speakers in my cab. Well played me. Disconnected them, so I've got a 2x10 now, pulled off the grills while I was at it, because they press into the cone surrounds are and DUMB
Been testing out a new pedal, fitting it into my band rig. I've been finding the Hotcake to be a bottleneck in my system, so I've replaced it with the Ill Omen overdrive from Nerd Knuckle Effects. It's got better tone controls, and at 18v has more headroom, which helps me stack a bit better.
In this video, you'll hear clean tone first, followed by the Omen. As you'll hear, it's pulling out some lows, adding some highs, and only a little bit of crunch. Then, I kick in the Durham Sex Drive (after the OD) to push the amp into overdrive, instead of pedal drive. Unless stated, these are always on.
Next, the hotcake as a high gain thick drive tone, then the Euthymia ICBM (op amp muff), then the Boss Hyper Fuzz (totally can't handle chords). Last I drop back to the OD/Durham, then just the boosted clean amp, then clean.
With apologies to Jamie Lenman, it's a damn useful chord sequence for a rig test.
