“Hey, get off of me!” She jerked away from him, holding tight to her bag. One hand was almost twitching; all this excitement had her wishing she could just take a breather and have a smoke. But now was not the time or place. Both December and this mystery man in front of her were breathing heavily, so the conversation moved a bit slowly. It was strange. Uncomfortable. Finally, she asked, “You gonna turn me in or let me go or what?” Letting out an exasperated laugh, she continued. “Do something, at least.” She rocked backwards again, away from him. This felt all sorts of weird. Crazy loud alarms were going off in her head. This stranger did, what – ? He physically assaulted a police office just to chase her down himself? Why? Shifting her bag around in her arms, December gulped down a breath, feeling it sting her throat. “No, I’m not from around here. Is it really that obvious? I mean – ” she paused, taking the opportunity to gasp for breath again, and chuckling, though a bit nervously this time, “Is this guy’s store really that common of knowledge around here? Do you people really have nothing better to do than talk about old men putting in security? I’m just hungry; I know how to shoplift. Why the fuck do you think I was wearing a baseball cap?” For emphasis, she took her cap off and threw it at hi, the sun washing over her features for the first time.
Jackson immediately threw his hands up when she had snapped at him, jerking away from him and clutching onto the bag in her hands. He laughed, shaking his head. “Woah -- easy there tiger. I come in peace,” He teased before allowing his hands to fall to his sides. He tried to peer at her from under the baseball cap, tilting his head a bit downwards as she gave him an exasperated sigh.
“If I was going to turn you in, do you think I would’ve knocked some heads back there?” The male asked, one thumb pointed back in the direction of the convenience store. He shifted in front of her, one hand going up and rustling his dirty blonde hair. He was being somewhat genuine. He might have been someone to avoid for many reasons but there was no darkness to his intentions just yet. “People usually don’t steal around here unless they’re in trouble, sorry if I just wanted to check up on you.”
Jackson caught the baseball hat as she tossed it at him, yelling at him for insinuating the fact she didn’t know how to shoplift. He allowed his eyes to trail over her features for the first time -- she’s really cute. It wasn’t until now he had begun thinking those thoughts he liked to keep hidden. He nonchalantly studied her facial features, his mind running a mile a minute. He laughed a bit nervously, one hand going up and rubbing the back of his neck. “It’s a small town, there’s not much to do sadly.”
After a few moments he smiled at her and held out one hand for her to take. “Name’s Jackson,” He introduced himself, keeping his interactions with her light and friendly. He didn’t want to scare her away too soon.
Life on the road was hard. Hitchhiking from town to town, hoping you didn’t get murdered peeing in the woods and wondering just how many people had sex on the grimy motel bed you were sleeping in for the night. Sometimes it involved doing things that would be frowned upon at any other time.
Or maybe at all times, but only for some people. Unfortunately, the cop standing in the corner of the convenience store was one of those people. All December had stuffed into her bag was enough food to last her the rest of the day and a pair of sunglasses. She didn’t see the cop. If the cop wasn’t there, her plan would have worked.
Walking up to the register, December flashed a smile at the greasy, pimply teenage boy behind it. “Can you give me directions to the nearest hotel if I’m heading south?” Color immediately rushed into the boy’s face. December’s smile got bigger as she leaned onto the counter, pressing both palms flat against the cool plastic and swaying towards him slightly, breasts pressed together and hair cascading across one shoulder. The boy made a strangled noise and pointed towards the back of the store. The second his back was turned to her, December leaned across the counter and swiped a pack of cigarettes, sliding a new lighter into her bag as well, just for good measure. The cashier came back with a map a few moments later, a big area circled, starred, and labeled. As she was about to thank him, she felt a hand close around her wrist. Looking up, she found herself staring straight into the face of a police officer.
“I don’t know about where you’re from, missy, but around here, we have a habit of paying for things.” December gasped and slammed the heel of her foot into the cop’s toes, making a mindless run for the front door as she did so.
Jackson was sent into town to pick up a few things and decided to stop for gas and a few packs of cigarettes at the convenience store before heading back home. As he walked through the aisles, grabbing a few small things and not necessarily paying attention to the scene that was happening before him. He was naturally a person who kept to himself when he didn’t have any plans but something was about to change. He kept his head down as he walked towards the register only to be alarmed by the booming voice of the security guard.
“I don’t know about where you’re from, missy, but around here, we have a habit of paying for things.”
Jackson raised his head at the sound of the commotion, watching as the girl whose wrist the officer had encircled broke free as the heel of her foot came down hard on his foot. Being a man of action now and words later he dropped the things from his arms and sprinted towards the officer who was cursing up a storm. The man didn’t have time to think as Jackson quickly pushed past him, causing the off-balanced other to tip over and fall into the aisle next to him. The aisle came crashing down onto another and then another, leaving the store in ruins. It didn’t take him long to catch up with the girl and he quickly reached out for her.
“--Hey! You got some real courage to steal from there,” He spoke through his panting, quickly moving so he stopped in front of her and keeping her from going any further. “You must not be from around here, old man Hubbard got the place fashioned with a shit ton of security cameras and even hired his own security to watch the place 24/7 after he was robbed a few months ago. Everyone knows better than to swipe from him.”
