#˖ ࣪ . ࿐ ♰ ˚ . › ⌗ out.#( i know i often joke about jason being my baby who did no wrong but )#( to whittle him down to that with complete sincerity does his character such a disservice )#( the same kind of disservice that dc does with him by reducing him down to 'the angry robin' or the 'wrong choice' )#( it's fucking reductive in fact )#( jason is as much a victim as he is someone who's done a lot of wrong )#( now.. does that mean that he doesn't regret all that wrong? of course not )#( he wouldn't be making steps towards reconciling with the family )#( if he felt no remorse at all about all the wrongs he'd done )#( he wouldn't have formed the outlaws (ignoring lobdell's atrocious writing) )#( task force z wouldn't have happened )#( he wouldn't have left such an impression on both roy harper or donna troy when he was robin meeting them for the first time )#( but that doesn't mean that he's never done bad things or rubbed people the wrong way )#( in fact )#( one might argue that jason wouldn't be jason if he didn't rub people the wrong way )#( he goes out of his way to do that )#( he gets a kick out of it actually )#( so... yeah... idk man he's a multifaceted character who can't just be slotted under one neat label )#( any well-written and well-rounded character shouldn't be i would argue )#( because we as real people in the real world do not fit under neat little labels )#( none of us )

Not "The Character did nothing wrong" or "The Character is irredeemably awful" but a secret third thing: The Character may display moments of deep love & compassion, may even have a strong sense of ethics, and may also be capable of brutal cruelty that is irreconcilable with those traits. The constant tension between the different sides of The Character's nature is exactly what makes them compelling, and attempting to reduce them down to simply "a terrible person" or "innocent & misunderstood" is missing the point of the questions a media with nuanced characters is asking you to consider

#˖ ࣪ . ࿐ ♰ ˚ . › ⌗ ch. study.#( this this this )#( T H I S )#( while jason is an empathetic character and someone who ultimately wants to look after those who can't look after themselves )#( and while he's someone who was abused and wronged and murdered and had something fucking horrific happen to him )#( to see him as this totally innocent and misunderstood entity does him a disservice and robs him of his agency )#( he's done terrible things )#( brutal things even )#( and while he makes good points about the most evil characters in the dc canon and about the very worst dregs of society )#( and while he has a point about the dangers of enabling teenage/child superheroes and sidekicks )#( he's murdered people. he's tortured people. he's participated to and continued the same cycle of violence that led to his death )#( and the same cycle of violence that got willis todd killed too )#( which doesn't put either of them at fault for their deaths at all but... it's something to consider when thinking about jason )#( and indeed the red hood as a character and as a vigilante )#( he also makes bad calls and hurts people and destroys things that aren't the real target of his ire )#( he's destructive not just towards himself but to the relationships he has with others and sometimes jason can be petty )#( and immature )#( in the way that he acts towards certain people and situations )#( which is due in part to the situation surrounding his death and his resurrection )#( but is also because he can be stubborn and stuck in his ways and can refuse to change his point of view )#( and so on and so on )#( i should do a meta about this )#( hm )

🏳️‍🌈 : jason is very secure in his masculinity and honestly? he always has been, which in turn means he's in tune with his more feminine side too. not because he's enby or trans or even gender fluid. he's just that secure in the knowledge that he's a man that he doesn't care! that, and as far as jason's concerned, gender is a social construct. it's there to be broken and spat all over. he's got no qualms about wearing eyeliner or nail polish. all of the singers in the nu metal bands and heavy metal bands he loved growing up could do it and they were seen to be the most masculine men to ever masculine. if they could do it, why can't he? jason's also not one to shy away from his emotions, he's convinced that some divine force turned his emotional dial up to eleven and snapped the handle off and left him to deal with it. he feels everything so intensely and i'm convinced that he was often bullied for it when he was growing up and going through school. you see, jason's a crier in pretty much all situations, always has been. if he's overjoyed? he's crying. if he's angry? he's crying. if he's upset? he's crying. while he used to bothered by the way people would bully him for it and would call him a girl and whatever... he's since learned to not care. he knows who he is and he refuses to be shamed for not acting or behaving "manly" enough.

🏳️‍🌈 : i don't think i've ever touched on this on the dash before but i can absolutely 100% see jason thriving in a throuple or poly sort of situation. or even in an open relationship to be totally honest. there'd need to be a lot of trust there, of course, because trust is the number one thing that jason needs in any of his relationships, nevermind his romantic or sexual ones. he can't be with somebody that he doesn't trust. that being said, he's also a total bleeding heart and he has so much love to give. that, and he's a hopeless romantic, the boy's out here giving his partners flower arrangements that correspond to the victorian flower language for crying out loud. this kind of dynamic isn't something that jason's actively looking for, mind, but he'd be more than cool with it if he were to fall into it with people he loves and trusts.

🏳️‍🌈 : jason's never actually been to a pride event as just... himself. he's usually so busy making sure that crime alley and the bowery are looked after (especially in places he knows the queer community like to hang out, pride month always brings the bigots out of the woodwork) that he just doesn't give himself the time. he's also never stopped to consider the fact that he hasn't either because, again, he's always too busy with his red hood thing. always moving from one thing to the next. however: jason does make a point to attend as many concerts as he can for smaller, more underground heavy metal/punk/alt bands. and more often than not, those bands are aggressively lgbtq+ friendly and often have queer folks as part of their line ups and their fanbases. so he gets to mingle with his people then.

🏳️‍🌈 : jason, like he does most of the year anyway, spends a lot of his pride month visiting shelters for the homeless with supplies and homemade meals. and sweet treats, he loves baking for them. he knows a lot of the younger people there by name and knows that a good chunk of them were kicked out onto the streets because they were queer in some way (be that because they weren't straight or they were trans or were otherwise gender non-conforming.) quite a few of these young people have since taken work at park row repairs (the repair shop jason owns and runs in crime alley) and have taken up residence in the alley. a lot of the older employees at the shop refer to them as 'jason's kids' because... well they kinda are. he's become a big brother figure to so many of them. and if they're aware that he's running his red hood operation out of the shop? they'll never tell.

🏳️‍🌈 : it took jason a long while to realise that he was bisexual, i think. not because of any hangups about dating men or about being seen as gay or whatever, but because he died so young and therefore missed out on all those teenage firsts. he didn't get to have that 'oh, boys are just as pretty as girls are' realisation when he was supposed to have it. it's only when he's sort of come out of the fog of his desire for revenge that he's able to sit and look back at his childhood and the first half of his teens like 'oh, i liked boys too. still do. awesome.' he's also never really had a coming out, i feel. he's not closed off about it, he just expects people to use their brains about it. he's had some sort of pride flag/bisexual flag pinned on his person for years. he openly calls his male friends hot, does the same thing with his female and enby and trans friends. he's always referred to his romantic partners as partners. basically, he treats his bisexuality as something that's just as much a part of him as his name is a part of him, you know? if you can't figure it out from all the very obvious hints he's dropping, that's on you.

🏳️‍🌈 : he's absolutely been gifted a rainbow helmet for pride from some very dedicated and sweet red hood fans. he's also been known to take pictures with fans during the event... he also gives out hugs to people who want them. but don't tell anybody that, he's got a scary reputation to uphold...
