While Arches National Park and Monument Valley National Park each boast of spectacular red rock formations, you don’t have to go far from the highway to see other spectacular formations. From arches to rock islands to Mount Waas, the drive on U.S. Route 191 is beautiful.
Last month I took a trip up to the Smoky Mountains to see them in their spectacular fall colors. I’m still going through the photos before publishing them to the store, but here’s a sneak peak of what I saw on the trip.
Sunrise at the Grand Canyon is simply spectacular. The air is still and quiet, and the colors are absolutely amazing. If you’re planning a trip out to the canyon, make sure you get a chance to see the sun rise over the canyon at least once!
They call Pikes Peak “America’s Mountain”. And when you get to Colorado, it’s easy to see why. Standing at an elevation of 14,115 feet, you can see Pikes Peak for miles as you travel along eastern Colorado. Here's how our trip to the top of the mountain went.

As a part of the old Santa Fe trail between Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Kansas City, Missouri, Raton Pass was a focal point for the Colorado Railroad Wars between the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad and the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad.
Eventually, the ATSF would gain the rights to build their line between Trinidad, Colorado and Albuquerque, New Mexico, over Raton Pass. The route features gradients of 3.5 percent up to the summit and a summit of 7,588, the highest point on the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe’s tracks.
Standing at over 4,201 feet above the town of Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Sandia Mountains stand out prominently in the central part of the state. And it's amazing at the top. Here's how our trip to the top of Sandia Peak went.

Overshadowed by bigger cities along Interstate 25 in Colorado, Trinidad is a lovely little town just north of the border with New Mexico. Founded in 1879, the town sits on the historic Santa Fe Trail and is was an important stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe’s Raton Pass route, home to the Super Chief and other majestic passenger trains.

Trains traveling through Flagstaff along BNSF’s southern transcontinental route can travel up to 50 miles per hour through town and close to 60 miles per hour in rural areas. Running between Chicago and Los Angeles, the line carries almost any kind of cargo you can imagine, from intermodal traffic to grain trains to coal trains to mixed freight and so much more.
