Laguna Beach House
Today at 10am I read in the Los Angeles Times about a renovation that is taking place at the Laguna Beach house which is located at 475 N Pacific Coast Highway. This reminded me of the Surfurbia that Reyner Banham was talking about. Some of the peculiar artifacts in this hotel are surfboards that are mounted over the hotel beds as a decoration. Furthermore, this place for surfboarders and people who like the outdoor style costed 1.5 million dollars to renovate. Moreover, surf reports are written in a chalkboard at the lobby. I feel that this Beach house envelops their guests in the California surf tradition and encourages fun in the sun. This article reminded me of the architecture of the beach houses where you didn’t know where the outdoors of the house ended and the indoor began. A passage from Reyner Banham says that the surfboards ” leaning on the sea-wall or stuck in the sand like plastic megaliths, they concentrate practically to create stylish decorative imagery”.I agree that this beach house is using this method to attract tourists. Another part of the hotel that is uing American products are the towel racks at the hotel. Skateboards are used as towel racks and they are customed made by Gordon and Smith who are surf makers. I enjoy skateboarding and longboarding and I think that it would be interesting to see this boards used for another purpose than to ride on a skatepark. If a person wants to stay a night at this fabulous hotel you would have to pay one hundred and ninety seven dollars per night.
