Final Reflection

This social justice class has definitely impacted my thinking. I never used to pay attention to what was happening around me or around the world, but now I see the importance of it. It has also changed the way I look at different situations. For example, what I just did my final on, the dignity of work and right of workers. It doesn't really involve me because I have never worked, but affects so many people around the world. I will now pay attention to what I’m buying and appreciate what I already have.

8. This is a picture of people looking for their loved ones after the collapse. Their faces show absolute distress and sorrow. Many workers were buried under the debris and could not be visible. Although, search crews looked, many people could not be found or identified.

7. It is sad to think about how the collapse affected so many individuals. Many people died and their families had to be devastated. Especially, since it could have been easily avoided if the building laws were followed. It also put families out of work because of injuries.

6. This picture is very disturbing. It is from the Bangladesh collapse of 2013. I think that seeing the damage is very different than hearing about it. If this picture was posted at the checkout of stores that get their products from sweatshops, many buyers would think twice about getting their products there.

5.Many people do not realize that the products they are buying are coming from sweatshops. Major brands like Target, Walmart, and H&M get their clothes from Bangladesh. Many want to buy clothes at a low price, but every upside has a downside. Workers, including children, are working in factories for countless hours, but get paid very little.

The Planet Money men's t-shirt will be made in part in Bangladesh.

4. This audio episode talks about Bangladesh’s working condition. It says that Bangladesh has always had bad working conditions. In fact, in 1989 child labor was very common in factories. Many people were in poverty before working in the factories. The percentage has changed from 60% to 30%. Most of the time, countries go from making t-shirts to making nice clothes then to making electronics. However, Bangladesh is stuck in the t-shirt making phase. They aren’t progressing much compared to other countries.

3. This video was released the day that the Bangladesh building collapsed. Cracks were found in the structure of the building the day before, but workers were still forced into the factory. It showed disturbing clips of the aftermath. The factory was shown to be linked to an Australian brand. The collapse was said to be because of construction code violations.

The two initiatives meant to make Bangladesh’s garment industry safer expire in a year—but the work won’t be finished by then.

2. This article explains what needs to be done after what happened in Bangladesh. After the collapse, companies agreed to improve safety conditions in their factories within 5 years. If they do not see a change, the factories will lose business with Western brands. 280 million dollars have been but into safety improvements by different organizations, but there is still a lot that needs to be done within a short time. The summer of 2018 is when decisions will be made.

The owner of the Rana Plaza which collapsed in 2013 killing 1,100 people and injuring 2,500 others is jailed on corruption charges in Bangladesh.

1. This video talks about the sweatshop disaster in Bangladesh. It says that sweatshops provide work for millions. Although, it is very dangerous and over 1,000 people have died within the past ten years. The major collapse has brought attention to this issue, but other issues like small fires or incidents go unnoticed. These sweatshops in Bangladesh provide products for large companies such as Target and Cotton On.

10. Pope Francis says that there is an issue with today’s society because many people do not care about the dignity of the human person. Many people are run by power and money, but that is not what gives us dignity. The opportunity to work is not present because society isn’t offering it. The pope said that we act in part of creation by working.

9. Every person has a special gift given by God. That is why there are so many different career choices. Different people are better at certain ones. Our gifts are God’s plan for us to improve his kingdom.

8. Many workers around the world get underpaid and over worked. On the other hand, some workers get over payed and under worked. There needs to be more of a balance. Wages should be completely dependent on the amount of time and effort that is put into a job.

7.This article says that out of all of creation, only man can work. It says that working is part of God’s plan and that it fills the world with charity, justice, and peace. Work also give us as human beings a sense of dignity within ourselves. Work also gives us the opportunity to expand the kingdom of God.

6. This picture is quite alarming. What catches my eye is the sign that says “Could you support a family on $5.15?” That amount is such a low number and I think that many people do not realize how well off they are. The dignity of work and right of workers says that every worker deserves fair pay. Yet so many people live without it.

5. All workers deserve to be respected. Many employees put most of their time and effort into their job. They deserve the right to being treated fairly and taking time off.

4. Father Rocky said that the human virtues come into play in the work place such as charity, humility, and honesty. He emphasies that your attitude plays a large role at work. You can’t go in with the mindset that you might get something done. He said, “The value of your work is not what you achieve, but what you put into it.” This is important to go by because you can’t go through life expecting that you will get rewarded without putting in the work. 3. This video talks about how workers should be treated fairly. It explains why sweatshops are so bad and talks about the organization United Students Against Sweatshops. This organization raises awareness about sweatshops overseas and underpaid college employees.The USAS is currently campaigning for the workers undergoing terrible conditions in Bangladesh. A major point mentioned was about how one person can make such a big difference by raising awareness.
