Days made just a little brighter.

Maelor had seen Jaehaera's face this morning during lessons. He knew that look. Tired and withdrawn, it was clear she had not slept well. Their tutor didn't seem to notice, opting to continue lessons on maths and literature. He never seemed to show any mercy to his pupils.

That was when Maelor decided that he was going to make sure Jaehaera got a treat today.

Dragonstone was easier to snoop around than Kings Landing, but Uncle Aemond had been ever so kind to point out the hidden stairway down to the kitchens. It connected the Royal family's wing to one of the cellers, and Maelor couldn't help but wonder if any of Jaehaerys the Conciliator's children had wandered down to the kitchens when no one was looking and done what he was planning to do.

It was easier than it looked. The kitchens were warm and buzzing with activity and Maelor was quiet enough that no one even noticed the young prince creeping over toward the ovens. There were a dozen loaves of bread, still steaming, sprinkled with oats and seeds. Pies, both sweet and savory, lined a sideboard and that was where he found his prize.

It was literally the most glorious pie Maelor had ever seen. It was still in the cast iron pan, the crust a deep golden brown, sugar sparkling in the firelight from the oven. It smelled like cherries and apples, deep wine pink under the lattice woven across the top.

Perfect.

He moved with great stealth, at least in his own mind, like one of those famous thieves from the stories he liked to read. He grabbed both the pie and two spoons, and waited for another wave of activity before he disappeared back up the stairs toward the Royal wing of the keep.

Getting to the library was almost harder than actually borrowing the pie from the kitchen. Servants eyed him curiously, but he would just grin and keep walking, the spoons jingling in his pockets, pie hidden between his hip and the wall, pan warm in his hands. He made sure to avoid any of his family, and slipped into the library without incident.

He found Jaehaera in one of her typical places, surrounded by books the tutor expected them to read from. He sneaks past the maester who tended to the scrolls and tomes, and breathes a sigh of relief as he comes before his sister. He puts the pie down on the table before her and grins. "Hello Jae." He says with a huge grin, as pleased with himself as a cat in the cream. "I noticed you seemed sad this morning. I don't like when you are sad, so I brought you a snack. Don't ask me how I did it."

The change of places always affected Jaehaera. Going to King’s Landing soon took a toll on the princess; on the very first night, she had not been able to sleep. Repetitive dreams kept appearing to her, as though they refused to change—always of some tragedy.

When the sun rose and the maids came to tend to Jaehaera, she only wished they would leave her alone. The sunlight that entered through the window as they drew back the curtains made the princess hide under the sheets. Of course, the maids pulled them away, telling her it was time for her lessons.

It was clear on Jaehaera’s face that she had slept poorly. Her pale complexion had turned even paler than usual, and her normally tamed curls were all in disarray... Even the simple task of dressing her took longer than it should have.

After breakfast came the lessons, which were torment for her. Jaehaera’s eyes grew heavier and heavier, threatening to close with every word the tutor spoke. Until a loud noise from him would jolt her awake, followed by a scolding for her behavior.

Later, Jaehaera decided to lock herself in the library, since she had studies to catch up on before her other activities. Yet the silence of the library only brought back her drowsiness, and she felt she might rest for a moment.

When her younger brother appeared, carrying a tart, confusion spread across the princess’s face. “Maelor… How?” But when she heard his next words, her look of confusion shifted into disapproval. “You know you must always ask. You’ll get yourself into trouble.” She shook her head… but then softened at her brother’s constant efforts to make her feel better. “Thank you, Mae. But you don’t need to worry about me.”

Since the freeze began, Aemond had been making time in his day for his nieces and nephews. He blocked out an hour or so throughout his days, telling his steward that should anyone ask for him, he was attending to business and could not be disturbed. It was his best chance to unwind, to enjoy the company of his family before he was dragged back into his duties as Prince Hand.

Now was such a time.

He’d cast off a couple of lords who’d been badgering him for a “moment of your time, my lord hand,” grabbed his cloak and made for the short cut to the royal family’s apartments. He was headed to pester Aegon and Helaena, perhaps steal Maelor from his lessons and get the three children to come out sledding or for another large snowball battle.

He cuts across the gardens, boots crunching on snow soft enough to make good snowballs for the incoming battle, and tucks his chin down, huffing. That was when he heard a grunt of displeasure and turns his head.

Jaehaera kneels in the snow, glowering in frustration as the mound of snow before her. It had the shape of a large cat almost, and it took Aemond a moment to realize she was sculpting a dragon.

Yes, he could see it now. Clever girl, his niece; she had sculpted the tail, up its body, wings tucked next to the snowy dragon’s sides, and was working on the head. That part seemed to be causing her trouble and he chuckles, smiling as he makes his way toward her.

“Would you like some company?” He announces himself well before he’s in her personal space, standing a few steps away from her. He smiles, tilting his head. “Or perhaps an extra set of hands to help with your snow beast?” He nods toward the snow dragon. “I’m a bit out of practice building snowmen, but I can follow directions well enough.”

Hearing a familiar voice, Jaehaera's head snapped up and turned in the direction it had come from. A huge smile appeared on the princess's face when she saw it was her uncle Aemond.

Jaehaera adored her uncle Aemond, perhaps because she felt he understood her somehow—even though he didn't share her own problems—always encouraging her and giving her a strength few could. The princess felt at piece when the man was around, like a protector.

"I'm trying to make Mordu," she explained to the older man, pointing with her hands to show that the dragon was almost finished, except for the head, which kept falling off. She signed, because it was the third time the head fell off and she didn't understand why "I'd love some help… At least try to hold the head while I finally try to put it back on the body." Jaehaera picked up the head that had fallen to the ground and stretched it into her uncle's arms. Hoping that he will get the head and help her out "You have to be strong, uncle. It's quite heavy." She warned him.

Daenys Targaryen, remembered as Daenys the Dreamer. "Legends claim that his daughter foresaw the destruction of the city in a dream; more likely, Aenar met with some mishap at court and chose exile over execution." - Viserys Targaryen

Jaehaera loves the story of how the Targaryens came to Westeros, finding it wonderful how Daenys was able to use her visions to save her family and people. She has created a strong connection with her ancestor, as she hopes that one day she will have visions like hers, where they will help people and no longer confuse her.

Her outfit was inspired by a painting she found of the princess. Using light, purple fabrics that made her eyes pop, Jaehaera tried to imitate the hairstyles Daenys had in the painting.

The accessories were also inspired, having been commissioned to create them since Jaehaera didn't have anything similar. Her long, curly white hair was tamed into two braids.

Jaehaera liked the snow. If she could, she would spend all her time outside, wrapped in that white blanket. She found it romantic — but also lonely, much like how she saw the world around her, in a way. If it weren’t for the risk of freezing from the cold, she would have stayed for hours beyond the castle walls. But her parents never allowed it, always calling her back when it was time to enjoy the snow.

At that moment, she was building a snowman. She was alone, but she didn’t mind... She liked being alone sometimes; the silence helped quiet the voices that bothered her in her head, or allowed her to focus on a single goal, solving problems on her own. Especially after the nightmares at night, when she couldn’t stand being in a noisy place — the headaches would come quickly with the sound of people talking, or even simple noises like shoes hitting the floor or cutlery clinking against plates.

Jaehaera was trying to sculpt a dragon — more precisely, her dragon, Morghul. But it wasn’t turning out as she had hoped, as parts of the dragon kept collapsing before the princess could finish the sculpture.

“Argh!” Jaehaera grunted as the dragon’s face crumbled once more.

She took a deep breath, trying to control herself so the darker emotions wouldn’t show. Then she knelt down again, carefully gathering the snow, determined to mold her dragon’s face.

“A picnic sounds perfect my darling.” Helaena smiled. She was glad that being outdoors was something Jaehaera loved, as it was something Helaena loved herself. Aegon and her had shared many picnics together before, and planning one for Jaehaera and Jaehaerys would be perfect.

Upon hearing Jaehaeras question, Helaena knew exactly what was going on. Jaehaera was at the same age where Helaena herself began to become interested in others romantically. Her heart pained at the thought of betrothing Jaehaera to someone, feeling that it was too early. But Helaena knew it was only her wanting to protect Jaehaera forever, and she was growing up. She wondered how her own mother felt when she was married to her Aegon…

But Jaehaera had mentioned two people, one being a woman, something Helaena wasn’t familiar with herself. Helaena was not against such things… after all she was married to her own brother, and her family had been known for such customs that others found distasteful. But none of that mattered, her daughter was perfect, and Helaena had no such negative feelings when it came to love.

She knew it would help Jaehaera to reassure her feelings, but she also wanted to tell her about her and Aegon. Their story wasn’t one Helaena talked about often, but her daughter needed it at the moment.

“No… your Kepa was my only love. But, daughter, it is normal to not only have one love. Love comes in different ways. Kepa and I did not always love one another… it took a while for us to get there. But, our love was unique to us, and that was what made it special. Your love for another, or, others, won’t be the same as mine. It will be unique to you.”

“I was about your age when I thought Kepa to be handsome.” She teased with a smile. “Whoever you find beautiful, I’m sure they’re great.” Helaena did not say their names, Daenaera and Aegon, as she wanted Jaehaera to tell her in her own time.

Aegon was Rhaenyra and Daemon’s first son, a sweet and most honorable boy, she would be thrilled if her and Rhaenyra could marry the two when they came of age, that is if they still held feelings for one another. Daenaera was a familiar child to Helaena, the kindest and most darling girl that Helaena cared for deeply. She could think of no better companion for her own daughter. Helaena smiled again.

She hoped Jaehaerys would accept her idea, but knowing her twin, she was certain he would agree without hesitation — and would absolutely love it.

"You’re lucky, Muña. You married your one and true love. Many people don’t have that kind of luck." She stated wisely to her mother. Jaehaera had her moments — moments where she seemed far wiser than children her age. Perhaps it was because of the nightmares she often had, or maybe her deep interest in history made her more thoughtful. Whatever the reason, Jaehaera knew that many couples didn’t love each other — not like her Muña and her Kepa did. "I hope I get to marry someone I love one day." She said with a soft sigh. Would she be that lucky? Or would she be forced into an arranged marriage one day? Then, a sudden thought struck her.

"Muña, you and Kepa are siblings... Does that mean I’ll have to marry Jaehaerys or Maelor? Jaehaerys is betrothed to Visenya, and Maelor is still little... Why is Jaehaerys betrothed and I’m not?" Another thing that was clear about Jaehaera was her deep curiosity — she had endless questions and always sought answers.

It seemed she could never hide anything from her mother. Even if she tried, Muña would surely find out sooner or later.

"I don’t know if I’m confused… But I feel something, like the feeling you described having with Kepa — only I feel it for Aegon… and also for Daenaera. Is it possible to love two people? I probably won’t get to marry either of them..."

A Dragon's Flight

Aegon enjoyed the familiar sounds of his sleeping dragon whose larger head rested on his lap. It was usually not something the very energetic Prince enjoyed but the bustle of Court had only grown in the months that had passed.

"My Prince," a dragonseed greeted as Aegon gave them a nod in reply. The sound of their footsteps echoed in the silence as Aegon gently stroked the scales before him; the warmth radiating from the creature of his gave the young Prince comfort. Especially now.

The breeze from the cold air moved into the Dragon's pit as his dragon only slept on; snoring loudly which would always make Aegon giggle when he was younger. A more delicate set of footsteps had his head turning around.

"Hera," her name fell from him in the soft tone only reserved for his family. A smile tugged on his face as the Prince as gracefully as he could stand whilst his dragon continued to slumber whilst still knowing its surroundings.

It was time to fly with Morghul, the moment Jaehaera always felt took an eternity to arrive. As soon as she finished her tasks, she ran to the pit, her long white hair flowing in the wind, a huge smile on her face at the joy of reuniting with her best friend.

Upon entering, she began calling out excitedly "Morghul! Morghul!" as she walked further inside. That was when she heard a voice and turned to see who was calling her. Her face flushed slightly, and a smile appeared as she recognized Aegon. Hearing her nickname from him always made her feel special.

"Hi, Aegon! Did you also come to fly with your dragon?" she asked cheerfully.

Before she could hear his response, she felt a weight against her—it was Morghul, who had finally arrived and was excited to fly. The dragon bounced around her before climbing on top of her and pressing his snout against her face. Jaehaera simply laughed, stroking him. Just like her, Morghul loved to fly, and his reaction always amused her. He almost seemed like a puppy, so enthusiastic he was about her visits.

"I must say, Visenya. Now that you can fly too, flying is so much more fun!" commented Princess Jaehaera. She was eager for her cousin to fly with her so that the two of them could travel to places together and finally begin the adventures they had always imagined. Jaehaera wanted to show Visenya everything and finally be able to travel to distant places with just the two of them.

"Not get me wrong... I love flying. But with your company, it feels like a completely different feeling."

A huge smile appeared on Jaehaera's face, showing how her happiness radiated physically.

"What did you think of the flight? Now we should rest for a bit." Jaehaera still cared about her cousin’s health and didn’t want it to worsen because of their adventures.

Viserys shook his head “I don't think you'll be able to hatch it, jaehaera” he extended his arm “May i touch it?”

As he traced his fingers across the ridges on the egg he couldn't stop himself from scowling, it was rather warm to touch how very odd, most dragon eggs that never hatch end up still and cold. He couldn't help but wonder where the egg had even come from surely morghul was too young to lay it.

“Does anybody else know?” he asked tearing his gaze away from the strange little egg in her arms. He would bet on at least jaehaerys knowing after all they were twins.

"Of course!" She carefully extended the egg, allowing her cousin to touch it. Jaehaera feared that even the slightest touch could break it, and the blame would fall entirely on her, as she was the one who had been taking care of it.

Jaehaera watched Viserys closely, observing every nuance of his reaction as he touched the egg. "No one." she replied in a serious tone, still focusing on Viserys and the egg, as if afraid that any additional word might reveal more than she intended.

This secret was locked deep in her heart, so well-hidden that not even Jaehaerys, her twin and other half, knew about it. She loved Jaehaerys and trusted him with her life, but there were things Jaehaera didn’t share. And the egg was one of them.

She didn’t feel safe enough to tell anyone. If she revealed it to Jaehaerys, he would likely tell their parents, who would then tell their aunt, the queen. And the queen would surely want to take the egg back, which might mean the dragon would never hatch, and she would never discover its secrets.

"You’re the first." she admitted, hoping that Viserys would keep the secret between them and not tell his mother. That the secret would remain solely between the two of them. It was a vow of trust she placed in him, a trust she had never given even to her twin. "I hope you can keep it a secret, cousin."

It was a nice change for Aegon and he could not deny that he enjoyed his cousin's company, even if past exchanges had been quick and surrounded by other members of the family.

The young Prince only watched her movements, like a curious cat that desired to play. His amusement seemed to radiate from Aegon as he only stepped closer. A smirk tugged on his lips as he moved to strike; only holding back the smallest amount of his skill and strength.

"Hmm, I could not possibly tell." Aegon teased as his chuckles escaped him. The chuckles were soon replaced by a grunt as his back hit the solid ground below him. Still, his energy allowed him to quickly recover.

"I wondered if you had that in you," the Prince couldn't help but tease his cousin. His smirk only grew as he reached for her; fighting the urge to exclaim his enjoyment. It was supposed to be a lesson after all.

A small laugh escaped Jaehaera’s lips as she watched her cousin on the ground. It was satisfying to see him defeated so easily, especially after that smug smile of his. For her, it was also a way to prove that she was capable and had talent for combat—showing that a girl could fight just as well and even win.

"I’ve got plenty more if you want to see." She teased, a playful smile spreading across her face as she arched an eyebrow and extended her hand to help the prince up. And there it was again—that smile of his. For some reason, it irritated Jaehaera deeply, yet at the same time, it made her cheeks flush with warmth.

"That’s all for today!" the teacher announced. The lesson had come to an end, and it seemed to have finished faster than she expected. When you were engaged and in good company, time flew by. Still, Jaehaera didn’t feel ready to stop just yet.

"Aegon, are you free? We could continue training! Maybe you could teach me how to use daggers." she suggested, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. She wanted to make the most of the extra time with her older cousin, as they rarely spent so much time together. Besides, learning to wield a new weapon seemed like an opportunity too good to pass up.

Alicent waited for the question to come her way as the silence stretched on; if only for a moment. The candles flickered against her sweet granddaughter's face. At that moment, the Dowager Queen was reminded so much of her daughter. The only difference, Helaena was much quieter.

Alicent should not have been shocked at Jaehaera's question; it was one she asked her own mother once upon a time. Too many years ago to count. Still, it had her speechless if only for a moment as she tried to collect her thoughts. "I believe they do, yes." Alicent finally answered. She had to believe they could, or else, what had it all been for?

It was not to say there had not been days when she had struggled with her faith; the day of her wedding, the nights that followed until the birth of Aegon. "Do you believe they do?" Alicent could not help but ask. Those doe eyes of hers locked onto her granddaughter once more; her prayers long forgotten about. Gently, Alicent picked up the stick of incense before placing it in Jaehaera's much smaller hand.

A soft gulp escaped the Dowager Queen at the second question coming her way. "Many things, my love." Alicent whispered as her hands clasped together; the golden rings so much like the scales of Sunfyre sparkled for a moment. "Your safety, for one." She reached to cup her granddaughter's face and gently stroked her cheek. "The Gods watch over us."

"I believe they listen..." Jaehaera began, her voice soft and hesitant. "But I don’t think they listen to everyone... At least, I don’t believe they listen to me." Perhaps that was why she had been burdened with the visions. Even though she desperately wished and prayed for them to stop, they never did. Instead, they only seemed to worsen.

Could Jaehaera have been cursed? Or was she destined to be like Daenys Targaryen, who foresaw the destruction of her kingdom and had to save everyone? But if that moment ever came, how would she know the difference? There were so many dreams without explanation, other nightmares that never came true, and those that did were about things so simple. Could she ever reach Daenys’s level? This was yet another of the countless anxieties that weighed on Jaehaera.

Jaehaera’s lavender eyes fixed on the flickering flame of the candle, watching as its light danced across the walls. Why had the gods given her this curse that brought nothing but worry and terror?

A faint, bittersweet smile appeared on her lips as she felt the comforting touch of her grandmother. "I tried praying for the nightmares to stop... But I don’t think they hear me, grandmother," she admitted in a whisper.

Could someone so young already feel so lost in the world? To feel as though even the gods didn’t care for her? Jaehaera had stopped praying for that very reason—because everything had only gotten worse, and praying didn’t seem to help the situation.

It was long voyage from what Daenaera could remember, she was in the boat with her father, as they waited to arrive at King’s Landing. If anything Daenaera was occupying herself with drawings and making jewelry.

Though she hadn’t had much friends in King’s Landing, she always found one. And it was Princess Jaehaera Targaryen. Though Daenaera was four years her elder, that didn’t really change the difference for the two of them.

“Naera, gather your things, we are about to arrive,” her father announced as they were approaching the dock. Daenaera started to clean up the mess she had made, packing away her sketchbook, her shells and tools.

She placed a little bag for Jaehaera, as she had made personal little necklace and a bracelet set for the Princess, as a gracious gift. She must always give gifts, giving people stuff always made Daenaera’s heart jump.

They had arrived at the docks of Blackwater Bay in King’s Landing as the guards started to unload things. Daenaera stood by her father, as she looked at all the things that were getting unloaded from their ship.

Once arriving, the young Velaryon girl saw a little Targaryen hair peaking out from the crowd. A small smile appeared onto her face. “Father may I go? May I go see the Princess?”

Daemion nodded, as he knew how excited his daughter was to be here. Rightfully so deserved to see her friend. “Go, but make sure to come back for dinner,”

Daenaera nodded, “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” she kissed her father’s cheek, before pushing through the crowd to see Jaehaera.

Once approaching she gave a small curtsy to the princes, “Jaehaera!”

"Today is the day!" Exclaimed Jaehaera as she woke up. The princess leapt out of bed with energy and ran to open the curtains, letting the sunlight flood the room.

Jaehaera had woken up earlier than her maids, driven by excitement for Daenera’s arrival. She was attempting to dress herself when the maids entered the room, shocked to find her already up. It was unusual. Jaehaera normally took every chance to sleep, as her nights were plagued by nightmares. However, the maids were unaware of this and simply thought the princess loved to sleep.

The maids quickly helped her get ready, and as soon as she was prepared, Jaehaera dashed off toward the docks, eager to meet Daenera, who was due to arrive shortly.

At the dock, the young Targaryen waited anxiously for the Velaryon to arrive. It had been a long time since she had seen her friend, and despite the age difference between them, Jaehaera adored Daenera. She felt especially happy knowing that Daenera never thought of her as childish, even though she was younger.

When Jaehaera spotted Daenera in the distance, a wide smile lit up her face. "Daenera!" She called, running toward her friend as soon as she disembarked. After returning the brief courtesy bow, Jaehaera wrapped her arms around Daenera in a warm embrace. "How was your journey?" She asked, beaming.

“Oh yeah, Mumuña loves Dragonstone. She grew up there,” Visenya said with a bright smile. “Meleys is not old. Vhagar is old and she’s flying with Aemond, right?” She added with a shrug. “I think it’s because of the babe, like Syrax won’t fly with muña, maybe Meleys won’t fly with mumuña because of her babe? I can’t wait for my dragon to be big enough to ride. Though I do love when Aemond offers me a ride on Vhagar, she’s so big and fierce.”

Visenya easily noticed her cousin’s uneasiness. “Jaehaera?” She questioned and sat up, turning to face her cousin. Visenya was used to being concerned about her, but now she was concerned about her cousin, her almost-twin. “Why not? Something wrong with your bed or the bed here? I’m sure we can find a solution to that. You can even come and share my bed!” She offered enthusiastically. “It’s big enough for two, I promise.”

Visenya shifted slightly and reached out, touching her cousin’s hand gently. “Or maybe the Maester can give you a tincture?” She suggested with a soft smile. “They’re not great tasting, but they help. Oh, and lavender balm on your feet and behind your ear, I have some in my room. And warm baths.”

"Yes, you're right. Vhagar is older, and Kepus Aemond still flies her... Besides, she’s huge and should be able to carry at least three people." She agreed with her cousin. Age didn’t seem to affect dragons, but it was clear that Vhagar, being so large, appeared slower. However, her overwhelming strength made up for any lack of speed.

"Dragons know when muñas are pregnant. They want to protect Mumuña Rhaenys, Sodjisto Rhaenyra, and their babies. It must be some kind of protective instinct..." She continued, reflecting. "My muña also told me that Dreamfyre wouldn’t let her fly when she was pregnant with me and Jaehaerys. It seems dragons can sense when their riders are expecting babies."

"There’s no problem with the bed..." She murmured, averting her gaze. The problem wasn’t the sleeping arrangements but rather her body, which seemed determined to challenge her mind. Or maybe it was her mind challanging her body? Anyway, the sleepwalking was making Jaehaera sicker each day looking more paler than Visenya who had being sick "Are you sure you want to share the bed? I don’t want to disturb your sleep." Jaehaera asked worriedly. She knew Visenya’s health was fragile, and restful sleep was crucial for her recovery.

A small smile appeared on Jaehaera’s face. She didn’t want to burden her cousin with worries, but at the same time, she felt warmed by Visenya’s genuine care. Gently, Jaehaera placed her free hand over Visenya’s. "I’ll talk to the maester and consider your suggestions, Visenya... Thank you so much."
