Though he didn’t seem like someone who would intuitively hide things about themselves, Jae-hyuk certainly did not talk much about his history or his passion in life much. Years before, he had decided that there were simply no place in his current life for his past to seep through, and he had stuck true to that, relegating it to the back of his mind where it laid there silently — quiet enough that it didn’t interfere with his daily life, but perpetually present.
So when his friend got him a skateboard, his heart did a happy little leap and his eyes did an excited little dance. Being on a board in so long, despite the terrain being extremely different, sent his heart into a tailspin, with an onslaught of emotions attacking all at once. Though it took a little while for him to understand and appreciate the differences between a snowboard and a skateboard, once he actually understood the mechanism of his new board, he was killing it. Now, when he can, he could be seen carrying the board and riding it whenever possible, driving pedestrians absolutely insane with frustration.
And it appeared that this time would be no different. Jae-hyuk, on his way home from school, had decided to ride on his trusty board (having just reached their third anniversary) when, all of a sudden, one of the wheels separated from the board, leading him to trip and collide into an approaching pedestrian. Standing up immediately, he started assessing the state of his board before halfheartedly asking about the condition of the stranger he had ran into. “Are you okay?”

The rain fell down relentlessly. As he waved goodbye to his co-worker from the bookstore, he tried waiting for the rain to cease— but it only seemed to get heavier as the seconds passed. Glancing at his watch every few seconds, as if time would slow down (as well as the unyielding patter of rain doors), a look of pure impatience spread across his face. He had lessons in a few hours time and he had to get home, before getting his lesson materials.
He would just have to bear the brunt of the impending storm, Jae-hyuk decided.
So he ran as fast as he could (without slipping, of course, though his shoes were soaked entirely and the useless sole of his seemed to only aid that possibility), diving in and out of shelters littered on the street when, all of a sudden, a huge lightning bolt shone right in front of him and hit the tree mere meters from him.
Recoiling back instinctively, eyes widening in shock and fear, he glanced over at the only other person in the shelter and shouted: “Did you see that?”

Late, late, late. Again.
It was absolutely terrible how being late had already become a thing of norm for Jae-hyuk. Had he taken the effort to actually learn from his mistake, he would have set the clock (at the very least) an hour earlier, knowing how long it took from him to arise from bed. Plus, he had a ridiculous amount of things to accomplish today, and being late would definitely put a damper on that.
So when he saw a cab that looked vacant, he immediately flagged it down, not realizing it was stopping for the person behind of him who had flagged it down.
Running over he reached to open the cab— only to be faced with a stranger at the same door. “I’m sorry,” he said, a little prouder than he would have on regular occasions. “But this is my cab.”

“The packaging says to wind the string and then to let it rip,” he said excitedly, waving the kite he had just bought in his hands. After thorough consideration, Jae-hyuk finally settled on a beautiful colorful kite. Initially, he had been leaning towards the dragon-shaped kites, as seeing them roam the skies would have been amazing. But, he took a quick peek a few days back, and the amount of dragon-shaped kites were far too many to make it truly stand out. In this case, Jae-hyuk had decided: the simpler the better.
Though he wasn’t sure if Cleo approved of the design, as it might have been too simple, especially as he saw other people whipping out their larger-than-life dragons with overtly elaborate designs scribbled all across the surface.
Subduing himself slightly, he tried to gauge her level of excitement and approval. “I’m good friends with the uncle,” he said slowly, wondering if she liked it. “I’m pretty sure I can change it to an animal, if you prefer!”

Today was supposed to have been a good day. He had woke up a few minutes before his alarm was set to go off, and had enjoyed the time to simply lie in bed through his half-asleep state of mind. It should have been a brilliant start to a brilliant day, a sign that things were going right. But, then, he had fallen asleep right as the alarm begun to rang — the slumber deeper than before, this time round. It appeared that no alarm possessed enough strength to awaken him. And it was true, for he slept through his morning class... and the following afternoon class. Following the events of the day, naturally, Jae-hyuk wasn’t the happiest camper on the train,
Plus, he had a splitting headache.
And no painkillers.
Great.
The trip to the convenience store wasn’t as bad. The sun was forgiving today, leaving only a mere graze of heat on his back as he trudged along to the store nearby. He would get some instant noodles, enjoy it and return home with the pills. And when Jae-hyuk saw his favorite flavor of noodles avaliable, it seemed like the day wasn’t going to be too bad... only to walk straight into a stranger with pipping hot noodles in his hand.
“Shit — ,” he said immediately, his hands instinctively throwing the noodles as far as he can as it dropped, hopping that he didn’t accidentally burn the person with his noodles. “A-are you okay? Are you hurt? Shit, I’m so sorry.”

“i think you’re supposed to see saturn in the distance,” jae-hyuk said, peering earnestly through the eye-piece of the telescope. having realized he had missed the best viewing time for the ringed planet, he had adamently called up a few of his friends to observe the sky — trying to prove that anytime was the right time. even if he had never been very much into astronomy and star-gazing. in fact, what he was looking at was most definitely not saturn, but he had convinced himself it was.
“yes, i’m most definitely sure it is saturn. a hundred percent,” he said, moving away and letting jace having a chance to look through the telescope. “no, i am a hundred and one percent certain that that is saturn.”
“Don’t worry, you’re with me. What could go wrong?”

“do you really want me to answer that?”
jae-hyuk looked accusingly at valerie, his arms littered with raised little bumps that resembled hives. he had decided that flower arrangement was an essential skill that he needed to learn, and had practically b e g g e d val to teach him… without knowing he was slightly allergic to pollen. and while she had no idea of his allergy, he was even more surprised, having been convinced that he was free from allergies.
“i don’t think flower arranging is my calling,” he said, shivering as he prodded the bumps slightly, a disgusted expression spreading across his face.

“choose one,” he said, holding up two dvds in his hands. in his right was the space fiction classic: star wars, and in his left was another great film, the mob classic: the godfather. two different genres, but they both were deemed integral in their development of their own genres. which, though great, led to a very indecisive jae-hyuk. “i mean, star wars is amazing — and watching it never truly gets boring. but... it’s the godfather.”
he placed both bank on the shelf, staring intently at the two titles, hoping for some sign as to which film he should pick. “what about you?” he asked, without looking at casper. “pick your poison: star wars or the godfather?”

Jae-hyuk rushed into the burger joint in his suit and tie, looking as out-of-place as one possibly could. His hair was pushed up, his shoes were shined to the point where one could see their reflections perfectly and he was even wearing make-up. The clock was inching towards nine, but the amount of people in the store appeared to be doubled from when he passed by the store at around dinner time.
He had noticed the store the first time he passed by the area — it held the right amount of class and inelegance that suited him just right. Jae-hyuk had never explored this area of Seoul before, and the bustling crowd had made it extremely attractive to him. And, apparently, the attraction wasn’t singular, seeing as the entire store was filled to the brim with customers... save for one table.
Heading over to the table-in-question, he offered the other a friendly smile, hoping to come across as friendly as could be. “I’m sorry,” he started out saying before realizing he was way too soft to be heard. Clearing his throat, he repeated his words. “I’m sorry, is anyone sitting here?”

“its not that bad, actually,” he said, the car-wiper whooshing rhythmically as the rain fell mercilessly on the car body. a part of him wondered if the furious raindrops would actually leave behind marks on the car, and though he knew he was being entirely irrational, it only magnified how truly scary the lightning storm was. “it’s really not that bad,” he said, speaking louder than he would, trying to console the girl.
a part of him wanted to pat terra on the back or to hug her but he had never been affectionate as a person, and had never actively initiated much physical contact, even with his closer friends. he knew that a comforting pat and a reassuring hug would do wonders to calm a person, but he still felt heavily hesitant. reaching over gingerly, he patted her back awkwardly, hoping it — even if it was by just a little.
“look,” he said, pointing through the windscreen (even though the rain was way too heavy to actually see through). “we’re almost at your house. it’s just a bit longer.”
he paused for a second, unsure of how exactly to help terra. jae-hyuk had never felt ridiculously helpless: a friend needed him and yet he could do absolutely nothing to help. at least nothing of significant worth, he thought. “you can hold my hand while i drive?” his words faltered slightly, unsure if that was what she wanted. “i’m going to get you home safe and sound, okay? trust me.”

“I know, I know,” he said, raising his hands up in mock surrender. “I should be arrested for how insanely good I look, right?” As he said those words, he gave a model spin that looked like it could have came out from the Seoul Fashion Week... or so he would have liked to think. He had chosen to be a toothbrush — with an obnoxiously bright blue handle and with cut-outs for his head (placed beautifully amongst the bristles) and his limbs.
“Don’t you think I pull it off well?” He was partially joking: he knew he looked pretty great — as great as someone wearing such an unflattering costume could. Jae-hyuk gestured at the mouthwash costume hanging by the side furiously, and started to exclaim a little too loudly. “Oh, there's a mouthwash costume too! Go try it on, and maybe we can convince our other friends to be dental floss and toothpaste!”

The cool air of the store blasted itself relentlessly on Jae-hyuk’s nape, just like it did minutes ago when he was outside, and he wished he was smart enough to have worn something more suitable for the increasingly volatile weather. It was nearing twenty-four years since he was born, and his only suitable casual outerwear had looked like it had been through hell and back. But that didn’t matter as he walked through the different aisles of clothing, brows furrowed. He was on a mission to find more appropriate outerwear, even if he didn’t know exactly what that would entail.
Turning his head to the stranger beside him, Jae-hyuk was happy to realize that the other guy looked like he knew what was somewhat fashionable. Smiling slightly at him, he took a quick peek at the clothes he was looking at, trying to see if his looks matched his style. “Sorry, but you look like you know what you’re doing,” he said suddenly, surprising himself. “Do you, by any chance, know which is the most... say, fashion-forward coat?”

“i don’t think i’m meant for pumpkin carving.”
jae-hyuk threw his knife angrily onto the table, and glanced around at the mess he had made in an attempt to be somewhat artistic. pumpkin carving had seemed like a brilliant idea to start with — after all, people had been posting pictures of their beautiful pumpkins left and right on social media, and even young kids had jumped on the bandwagon with their faux artistic shots of the squash.
but, as he looked at the pumpkin that he had gutted out an hour back, he couldn’t help but feel lied to.
the picture that was supposed to have been a typical face instead ended up looking like the face of the moon… if one were to hold up the pumpkin at a thirty-five degrees angle and with their head tilted slightly backwards. and, even then, it was far too strange in shape to properly represent the moon.
“how’s yours looking?”
