Brandon... only buys very fancy socks. All of his socks are his good socks.
He is absolutely insistent on only buying one particular brand of wool socks, and if you open his sock drawer? You’ll find a dozen-odd identical pairs of them. He absolutely swears by them.
If they aren’t wool, he doesn’t want them - wool is durable and keeps its warmth when wet.
If they aren’t this one particular brand, he doesn’t want them - other brands have that annoying seam at the toes or are a bit scratchy or are a little too tight around the ankle...
He takes his sock-game seriously.
( ...Do not mess with his socks or doubt his sock-game if you want to live. )
Brandon - this man, this poor man, this poor poor soul - is allergic to Nanab berries. This is very very unfortunate given how abundantly available they are, and how sensitive he is to them. If you shake his hand right after eating one or if you wave wave one in his face and he breathes a little bit too hard - well, bye-bye Brandon.
... In actuality, while he is very sensitive to them, his reactions aren’t severe. He’ll get a rash at best or an itchy throat at worst, and he’ll be grouchier than usual for a bit until his symptoms subside.
“What do you got there- hey- hey.”
There’s never a break with these three, is there?
“Come on, drop it.” A defiant blip sounded out in response from the ice beast, whose back was turned to to its trainer. He’s trained this trio to listen to his every command in battle - yet outside of battle, they became the most oppositional beings in the world.
“C’mon,” Brandon snapped his fingers, “drop it, or you won’t get a treat.”
Of course, Regice would give up its loot in exchange for a treat! With little delay, it turned to face Brandon, handing over the bundle of socks it had stolen.
( Oh Brandon, you’ve accidentally taught it that stealing gets it treats. )
“Stealing my good socks too, huh? Bastard.” He shook his head in disapproval, then looked back at Regice, who was now looming over him.
Where’s the treat.
Brandon is not the healthiest at handling rejection, often resorting to destructive behaviours at times. One example of his flaring temper and petty attitude with regards to rejection is his ( one-sided ) dynamic with PALMER.
Fifteen-odd years ago, Brandon had a brief hook-up with Byron. Brandon wanted something deeper than what they had, and while he was devastated when he found out that Byron didn’t want anything beyond friends with benefits, he was even more distraught at the revelation that Palmer - a mutual friend of theirs - was the man Byron yearned for.
Knowing that, no matter what he did, Byron wouldn’t be his - Brandon flared with envy. He wanted to get back at Byron, and what better way to hurt deep than to get with the man who the steel trainer adored? Over the next few months, Brandon tried to work his way into Palmer’s life, motivated by envy and anger. Dropping subtle ( and not-so-subtle ) hints, going out of his way to spend extended amounts of time in Sinnoh, inviting the Tycoon on expeditions ( of which were turned down due to a busy schedule ) - and Palmer was oblivious.
Yet soon, Brandon found that he was attracted to Palmer. He was no longer fuelled by desire to get back at an old partner - he was fuelled by a genuine attraction. The subsequent and continual rejection of his hints by Palmer only ripped Brandon’s wounds deeper, and the realization that neither of them could be his? Burned.
He fell into a depressive episode, gave up on going after either of them, and became more distant from both of them - a rift that took years for Brandon to close.
( In the current day - Brandon does look back on his behaviour with regret and shame. It isn’t something that he likes to think about or dwell on too much, and he has a tendency to block it out. )
SLEEP HEADCANONS.
Brandon has always been an early bird. Most mornings, he’s wide awake at 5 or 6 at the latest - and he doesn’t tend to sleep in at all, even on days off. In the evenings, you can count on him being passed out at 8 or 9.
He doesn’t tend to have trouble falling asleep nor staying asleep, but he is very sensitive to heat at night. The few restless nights he has are oftentimes in the middle of summer when the temperatures are highest.
He can fall asleep pretty much anywhere if he needs to.
He showers right before he goes to bed, and showers right when he wakes up.
Can I just say... the contrast between PokeAni Brandon and PokeSpe Brandon fascinates me. They’re effectively polar opposites in the way they react to scenarios and treat others - they could honestly pass for completely different characters in that regard.
I haven’t watched all of PokeAni - all I remember of it are the episodes I watched as a kid. I’ve watched two of the Brandon episodes though, and if I recall correctly (+ supplementing from Bulbapedia), Brandon was stern but humble. He talks about maturity, and in one of his battles with Paul, he tells Paul that he lost because the young trainer wasn’t able to control his emotions.
He’s meant to be a wise master, so to speak. He’s mature, he preaches responsibility, he holds relative control over his emotions.
...Compare that to PokeSpe.
I think... when Brandon dies, his soul will either be at ease, or it will be restless.
At ease for the simple fact that his life was fulfilling for him. He was able to travel, discover mythos, meet others who made him feel complete - he built a life he was happy with.
Restless due to all of the grief he’s experienced throughout his life. He’s bitter over past relationships, he’s bitter over the experiences of his childhood, he’s bitter that he wasn’t able to explore and discover everything that he wanted to. There were so many emotions and memories which he never came to terms with, and so many more things he wanted to do, that it’s simply not possible for him to rest.
“... No, you can’t have that.”
He’s at the desk in his study, looking over some minerals - but of course, he had a curious ‘helper’ with him. A giant stone ‘hand’ - rather, a misshapen lump of rock - peeked into Brandon’s vision, and he immediately pushed it away.
Brandon spent days tumbling these minerals, and he is not going to give them up so easily.
“They’re not for you.” He pulled his lips into a thin line, twisting his back to look at the stone golem. “You know how long I spent working those. Yeah, you do.”
The lights on Regirock’s face blinked.
“Don’t give me that look.”
He swears that these things are like overgrown toddlers sometimes.
There is something about the Regis that Brandon is completely unaware of - and that is their mental influence over him. A mental link.
Brandon had always been idly interested in the Regis ever since he first started to research Hoenn’s mythos. To him, they were simply interesting legends, and they didn’t stand out much from the other beings of Hoenn’s ancient tales. But ever since he uncovered a peculiar chamber not so far from Pacifidlog, and laid his fingertips on the writing engraved in the walls, uncovering the Regis has been his life goal.
Brandon can’t fully understand the Regis’ behaviours or ‘speech’... but he can generally make out what they’re trying to communicate, even when others are completely unable to decipher what’s being communicated. Part of that comes from his experience being around them, but much of it comes from the mental influence. Brandon is influenced to do things that benefit the Regis, so naturally that influence would extend to face-to-face communication.
Their influence over Brandon is subtle. All of his actions are of his own free will, but he is subconsciously drawn towards the golems. He’s drawn towards them, drawn towards knowledge of them, towards performing acts that benefit them - and he doesn’t even realize it.
“All I’m going to say on this naming discussion is that people who name their Pokémon with regular people names... are weird.”
He’s making a face as he says this. It’s clear that he has strong opinions on this topic.
“Imagine if I named my Breloom Michael, or my Ninjask... I dunno, Jennifer. That’s weird.”
The full piece I drew for the @ashpikazine and a bunch of spot illustrations I did as well! :~) The Brandon vs Ash battle is one of my all time favourite battles and Im happy I got to draw it!
...TL;DR of the dating pros/cons post.
PROS to dating Brandon.
Grumpy old man.
CONS to dating Brandon.
Grumpy old man.
What's the dog Registeel doin'? Brandon doesn't know. It's a mystery, truly. He's just trying to focus on identifying a gem, but the metal golem keeps trying to get in the way.
It picked up the gem between its large fingers, turning it over, then set it back down a few inches away from where Brandon had placed it. Brandon would move the gem back to where it was before, so that he could examine it better, and the moment he took his fingers off of it for more than a few seconds... His golem had picked it back up, then moved it a few inches away again.
"..."
He moved the gem back, and as he pulled his hand away...
Registeel moved the gem once more.
"...You're a weirdo, y'know that?"
