Oh and if you did Something Specific in Episode 3, it revealed the combination to Jakeās locked diary and that was the secret ending. But thatās one bullet Iām keeping in the chamber.
Okay, What About Episode 3
Follow up to last post obviously. Iāll be brief.
So once the player completes every route in the second āloopā of the game (i.e. all of the routes introduced in episode 2), they set off another persistent variable, just like they did at the end of episode 1.
When this persistent variable is flipped, the player can replay the game, and instead of it loading into the same intro sequence of Jake arriving home from his trip in the morning, the player is given a choice.
āWhen is the best time to start an adventure?ā it asks, and the player can choose āIn the bright morningā or āIn the dead of night.ā The first option loads them into the usual scenario and all the routes of ep1 + ep2. However, if they pick the new option, they are loaded into a new intro.
Jake arrives homes late at night. As he heads upstairs to his house, he passes the floor below him and sees Dirkās apartment being searched by people in red uniforms. They all urge him to move along, sir.
When Jake reaches his apartment, he finds someone lurking on his fire escape. Itās Dirk, who professes to be the downstairs neighbor being swatted right now. He apologizes and says heās been hiding out in Jakeās place whenever these people come calling. (He also admits heās been watering Jakeās plants while heās away.)
Jake invites Dirk to hide out overnight and gets him settled on the couch with some bedding so he can rest. While watching Dirk sleep, Jakeās mind runs amok trying to guess what kind of exciting mess Dirk is tangled up in. He comes up with three or four scenarios that the player picks from immediately, and that begins a long, more dramatic route through episode 3, each eventually culminating with Jake having to help Dirk run away from Crockercorp.
In one route, Jake supposes Dirk is a researcher from a top secret lab whoās absconded with a precious experiment. Thus, Dirk becomes a CC researcher who has stolen Bec, a supernaturally powerful dogcreature that CC was experimenting on. Dirk knows fucking nothing about dogs, so Jake has to help him dog wrangle and eventually escape with Bec. The happy ending is all three of them on a road trip, safe and free.
In another route, Jake supposes Dirk IS the precious experiment thatās escaped from captivity. Thus, Dirk becomes a CC refugee, a reality warping man known as the Heartbreaker. He has an incredible power: he can conjure forth whatever someoneās greatest desire is. The catch is once he does, the person forgets the thing ever existed. At the height of the experiment, CC had Dirk bring an orphaned girlās mother back to life, only for the child to completely forget her. It broke Dirk, and he ran away. Learning of CCās horrific treatment of him, Jake does everything in his power to protect Dirk and save him from them. In the end, the only way to truly rescue him is for Dirk to use his powers to pluck Jakeās greatest desire from him: Dirk becomes safe from CC, but vanishes, and Jake immediately forgets he exists. BECAUSE I HATE UNHAPPY ENDINGS there is a coda to this route in which a year later, Jake is still listless and unhappy, hanging out in the coffee shop. Dirk shows up, and asks if he can buy Jake a drink.
In the last route, Jake supposes Dirk is someone of great importance who is running from CCās evil regime. Thus, Dirk becomes an alien prince who is hiding out on Earth as heās the last living person entitled to the throne. Jake leads a little spy mission into CC to try and figure out how to save Dirk, and discovers that back on his homeworld, the Baroness canāt keep hold of the peace because sheās not entitled to the throne as long as there is a living royal remaining. But time is running out before Dirk is sort of auto-abdicated. Jake convinces Dirk to return home to his planet and take up his place. Dirk anxiously asks if Jake wants to come with him. BOY WOULD HE. Itās finally revealed that Dirkās alien form is basically a blue skinned alien space babe, like Jakeās deepest fantasies. They live happily ever after.
So that was the road map. Each episode was basically set up around answering a Question. In episode one, itās who the strange noisy neighbor is. In episode two, every jokey route reveals what is inside the second apartment Dirk has. And in episode three, each route focuses on Dirkās backstory, leading up to Jake finally leaving on a great adventure.
All centered around the mystery of one Choice Babe.
MAN it's been around year since the first chapter has released and im super sorry for not stumbling across this gem sooner, but holy shit it was so fun to read through. It might not mean much so long after its release and hiatus, but im genuinely so happy this came out. I hope everything's going all right for you guys, whether or not you plan on continuing this amazing piece, but know that there are still people out here silently rooting for you. damn this wasnt even a question im very sorry
You are totally fine. Iām thrilled that people are still aware of JEA and enjoy it. I still consider it weirdly some of my best writing. Itās easily the most fun Iāve had writing.
Itās sadly not going to be continued. City parted from fandom and we are no longer in touch, so the project sadly will not continue.
Which is a shame because man the plans for episodes 2 and 3 were a BLAST. So at the end of episode 1, if you take the correct path, Jake gets ahold of Dirkās phone number. That carries over to the next time you play. Obviously there is a hint of this if you replay JEA-- suddenly, you can dial that mystery number, but then the game ends! Cliffhanger!
So in episode 2, having that number would open up a new āloopā for the player. If they didnāt call it, they would just replay the content of episode 1 with no variation. But if the player calls Dirk at the start of the episode, a whole new path opens up in which Jake makes an ass of himself cold calling a stranger. Later, in the mailroom, Jake runs into Dirk, who recognizes Jakeās voice as the weird cold caller.
They weirdly hit it off. Jake gets invited up to Dirkās place, which he is excited about because he gets to figure out what is up with the weird guy upstairs.
DURING THE DATE, Dirk has to step out to grab the pizza. Jake has enough time to look around at one thing, and what the player picks determines what route they are on. In one, Dirk is a vampire. In another, heās a runaway robot Crockercorp created to compete with Alexa. In another, heās an alien. In yet another, Dirk is just a DJ.
So Episode 2 focused on like 5 or 6 small, funny routes, and the gimmick is that each one kind of ended with Jake and Dirk living together in a small domestic happy ending.
That was the roadmap for Episode 2. Then Episode 3 was........ something rather different. 8)
- @callmearcturus, who just for reference is now writing another visual novel with a small team if you want to follow me and keep up /eyebrow waggle
what happened to city??
City is 1000% fine, they just need to focus on their career and that is not conducive to fanprojects right now.
This may not be what you need, but if you ever feel like you want help with coding JEA, I would gladly do it. While Unity is more my jam, I bet I could orient in renpy without issues. Well, not RIGHT now cuz I have to finish my bachelors thesis that I have to turn in in less than 3 WEEKS FUCK, all my fanprojects are stewing on the back burner until then, but I am availaibe after that. Also, fuck capitalism. I love making games so much, I just want to make queer indie games. Screw having a day job.
The coding is not the issue. I actually deeply enjoy Renāpy coding. Like at the start of JEA, I was writing the game in a basic script format, but as City showed me how they were turning that into the code, I was like āoh thatās pretty flipping sweetā and I just wrote directly in code, and the entire back 2/3s of the game was completed like that. Itās very lightweight and easy to build in, I adore it.
It really is a matter ofā¦. I feel like to replace Cityās involvement, it would take several art people to make that style consistent and to troubleshoot GUI issues. Like City didnāt just do sprites, they built the look of JEA and it was phenomenal.
On top of that, I need to be able to write a lot. And in the choice between keeping fanfiction coming out or making a game, only one of those can win.
Which okay for a month or two, my patrons might tolerate. But I know the scope of episode two. Itās about 60% larger than JEA ep 1. How long will my patrons put up with that? With the only projects Iām working on being secretive onesā my novel and a game you canāt have a lot of previews of before the final product comes out.
And shit maybe this is a question I should be asking my followers and patrons. Maybe instead of 2 fic updates a month you want me to make that fangame magic happen. When I sit and think about it, I could attempt to make a process that works with my reduced free time and with Cityās stepping away from the project.
But I also need that patreon $$$$ to cover my health insurance payments right now.
So. Itās complicated.
shocking breaking news: JEA on indefinite hiatus, IRL obligations suck, news at eleven
Hey, Arc here.
Iāve gotten several very very kind messages asking about the project in the past two months. Which is completely understandable. I know plenty of people follow this blog and not the individual creators. Totes fine.
I do not know if/when JEA can continue.
For myself, I have a full time job that dramatically limits my time (and spoons). For my dear art director, they have a career they have to focus on, which is to me utterly understandable.
Itās extremely disappointing to me personally because.... I know life getting in the way of hobbyist projects is a fact of life, but I was deeply excited for episodes two and three of JEA because.... man I have written for like a decade now and I think JEAās concept and plan is some of the best shit I have ever thought up.
But I do not have the time nor team that can make the project happen, and I promise from the bottom of my heart, no one is more dismayed about that than me.
Maybe I will win the lottery in a week, and then I promise I would make this shit happen. But at present, capitalism stands in the way.
Iām deeply sorry for this news and I hope the situation changes in the future. But I fear by then, the irons will no longer be hot, and the audience for this project will not exist.
I hope for the best, but I know I have to tell yāall the truth. I hope you all can understand.
Hello! I just finished the first episode of the game! I really liked it, all things considered. Though, Jake was kind of a meanie to Jane. Haha, I guess it's kinda following Jake and Jane's relationship in the comics. I do hope this'll improve in the next episode! Good job, guys!
Jakeās not meanĀ but-- okay yeah heās kind of mean, but in a very specific way that awards him as much plausible deniability as possible. I genuinely love that aspect of his character and what a mess he makes of things.
There is a very interesting dynamic between Jake and Jane, in my opinion. The core of Jakeās character to me is his desire for a path of least resistance to make his life easier, and how that sometimes results in him stepping on peopleās emotions (and then pretending he doesnāt notice).
It clashes remarkably with Jane, where a central part of her character is how she harbors a grudge towards anyone who does not intuit the things she wants from them, and will silently stew and build up resentment like a shaken bottle of soda until she explodes.
So itās super funĀ and I love the Alphas a lot.

Hi! I just finished playing, I love how the interface looks, the narrator's suffering, and the fact that each character's "voice" has different pitches! I wanted to know, is Roxy's "artist girl" friend Calliope?
Yes, itās Calliope. 8) -Arc
For those of us who can't play it on the computer, will there by chance be a version of it for the phones? Such as Samsung and IPhones?
I can technically export to Android/iOS but I have literally no ideaĀ how this would work. I will look into it and see how well if functions? -Arc
Episode Two Update
Hello, adventurers. Arc here. How are you Iām good thanks. Hereās a fast update on the state of the project!
After the Episode One release, City and I pretty much took an extended break, partly to recuperate, partly to give me time to survive Black Friday Hell, and to figure out the scope of Episode Two and what we will need to make that happen.
So, a few things:
Iām the loosely acting Project Lead over here, mostly because I have marginally more time than City and Iām faaaairly confident I can prooobably do this. Cityās still acting Art Director Guy, but weāll likely be looking into expanding that portion of the team to lessen their workload.
But thatās honestly later. Right now, I am working on the Dense Outline for Episode Two, which we will build the script from. Currently, the plan is for Episode Two to have four unique paths added.Ā
A lot of assistance nailing down appropriately Cute And Funny options was facilitated by @purplepurpleunicornsparkle, who is joining the team as a much much needed co-writer. Iām both pleased as dickens to have a writer of Rosaās caliber and also tremendously relieved to have back up. This is a text-heavy game!
Once we have the full outline complete, weāll nail down what additional assets weāre going to need and expand in that direction. But one thing at a time.
Anyway, thank you for the awesome response to Episode One. I can promise Ā Episode Two will be much larger and will have much more satisfying endings than the very sequel-hooky endings of Ep 1. The game grows in complexity as we move further in.
Later, gators!
Thank you for making an option to turn off the music! (and that the game can go into full view.) -a user who uses a screenreader!
I had no idea Renāpy games worked with screenreaders! That is excellent and I am glad. Maybe I will look into seeing if it can do alt text for the images, and add little descriptors? I will keep this in mind for episode two! -Arc
boy howdy itās been a week
itās onlyĀ been a week, which is a little wild in my opinion. it feels like much longer, but nope! JEA ep 1 released a week ago! holy crap.
city and I will take some time to respond to feedback soon. sorry we waited this long, but we got some amazing comments and messages, and I can only say thank you so much for that.
keep watching this space for news. /fingerguns and a wonk

Spoilery Guide to Episode One
Iāve seen a few people who are having trouble with the endings, so here is some guidance. This is gonna spoil stuff so please only click if you need help!
Hi there! I played the game a few hours ago and I have to say it was great! I was wondering if you maybe had a tentative release date for the next episode (or the whole game, if that's what you're releasing next)? I'm really looking forward to it! <3
No, we do not. In my (arcās) personal opinion, the hardest part of the game building is done thanks to Episode One. We have most of our sprites and assets and things like the GUI built, and I have a p solid plan for the narrative in episode two that I am super psyched about.
But the amount of time the team will be able to devote to the game will depend much on the reaction to episode one. So, we shall see.
What should I do if there is no BGM in my game? I tried messing with options but it did nothing.
That would be because there is no BGM yet actually. For Episode One, Team Honey Lamp was uuuuh two people. If the reception for Ep1 is good, we have plans to ask some musical folks to come in and contribute.
unless i am being very stupid, which is extremely likely, the mac version doesn't have any kind of executable file included?
⦠YEAH. DANGIT.Ā
Arc here. I do not own a mac and thus couldnāt verify that file. City is the mac-daddy so they are building the distro. Check again in like ten minutes and itāll be fixed.
Sorry. SomethingĀ had to hiccup, didnāt it?
EDIT: The file should be fixed now, please re-download it for the right version! This was mostly my bad, sorry about the inconvenience, but please enjoy the game once you are able to redownload~! -city
