James hovers in the doorway, hands on his hips and giving her a wry smile. "Well, someone knows how to live vivaciously during their birthday, don't they?"

Clarisse was silent for a few moment, forcing herself to look away from James’ intense gaze. She was trying to calm her heart from popping out of her chest. Telling him would help, and perhaps that was best at the moment. Just ripping off the band-aid.

Looking back at him, Clarisse opened her mouth, "I-I… I’m… In love with you. God, James I love you so much that it physically hurts and I know that you probably don’t feel the same way, I know that I will never be enough for you and I can’t give any more… I can’t love you any more than what I already have and…“ she swallowed hard, "You speak of Helen and, I’m trying not to love you anymore. I can’t love you anymore, because you and Helen are so… Incredibly happy…”

She couldn’t look at him but forced herself to. She forced herself to take in his reaction, even if it meant rejection. Maybe then her heart would understand “no.”

Shock comes over him as soon as the first few words are out of her mouth. James can’t quite believe what he’s hearing. He thought if it were true that he would have been able to tell. Love shouldn’t be something that one can hide so easily. Or, had he been so very blind to his friend’s feelings?

James didn’t want to hurt Clarisse. It was the last thing he wanted to do but he didn’t know what to say that wouldn’t cause pain. Guilt filled him as he looked at her with sadness and took his hand back - not because he didn’t want to touch her but because he didn’t want to hurt her.

“You could never lose me,” he repeated as he tried to find the words. “I don’t want to hurt you, Clarisse. I’m so sorry. I .. I can’t feel the same way.” He kept close and facing her - in case she needed him. James wasn’t about to just leave her. “I .. I don’t know what to say. I’ve never wanted to hurt you, although I know I must be right now. Whatever you need from me .. if I can give it .. I will.”

Clarisse felt her chest tighten when his hands came up and carefully cupped the side of her face. She felt her breath hitch when he wiped her tears and she couldn’t help but lean into his touch and close her eyes for a moment. But then he dropped his hands and took hers into his own and it took everything in her power to not let it all go.

She took a shaky breath, "I failed you as well. We were both to blame, I… I didn’t fight for you as I should have an-” she paused and shook her head at herself.

When she found his eyes staring into hers, she felt as though he was gazing into her soul. She didn’t shy away from the intensity of his gaze. She never did; she loved their intensity, she loved the emotion they held. Clarisse swallowed and felt all strength leave her at his question of whether or not their relationship was damaged irreparably.

She opened her mouth to speak to him. To reply and tell him that no, it wasn’t damaged irreparably. That they could work it out, that things could be fixed, that they could be whole again. But all that came out was a loud sob. One that she’d been holding in since she walked onto the wedding venue. Maybe her companion wouldn’t be a glass of whiskey that evening.

James didn’t agree with her. None of it could have possibly been Clarisse’s fault. Not with what she had been feeling. Not with what she had gone through. The longer they looked into each other’s eyes the more James wanted to kiss her. The love he felt for her blossomed inside his chest in a way that it hadn’t done in months.

In the end, her crying was a good thing. It stopped James doing something that would have hurt the other woman he had to take into consideration. Not to say it didn’t surprise James. He had been expecting words after all. Her grief and pain made it all the harder for him to keep his emotions inside. They’d never really got to the point before where they could share their feelings and express them together.

Pulling her instinctively towards him, James wrapped Clarisse into a hug and held her tightly. He couldn’t make up for what he’d done before but maybe he could help now. Perhaps comforting her would help the both of them.

“I’m so sorry, Clarisse,” he whispered. His voice thick with pain. “Let it out. I’ve got you. I’m not going to hurt you again.”

Clarisse bit her bottom lip and blushed even more when he put his arms around her again and brought her into his embrace. She felt a shiver run down her back when he spoke into her ear and she sighed contently, allowing herself to relax against his body again, “Well then, I hope you don’t mind if I hire you for your cuddling services?” she let out a giggle. She really couldn’t help it, he made her feel oddly giddy.

“Let me make you dinner, to thank you for today?” Clarisse asked suddenly, looking up into his eyes directly.

His guilt subsided as she willingly relaxed back into his hold once more. Gently stroking her hair, he chuckled with her and hoped that his natural warmth warmed and comforted her.

“Dinner sounds lovely,” he murmured. He looked down to meet her eyes. “Anything that means spending more time with such a beautiful lady as yourself.”

It was her duty as future queen. It was her duty to close her eyes and just jump, making the sacrifice of not falling in love for the duty and honour of becoming ruler of her kingdom one day. That was what she was taught to do. You were arranged to be married to someone, you went through with it. You united the two kingdoms, and allowed your husband - the new King - to rule over it all, with you faithfully by his side. Love had nothing to do with it…

Clarisse wasn’t sure what came over her. She was in the royal carriage, riding through the woods with her guards all around. Two on horse back behind her carriage and two in front of her carriage. She was going to meet the man she was supposed to marry. She was signing her life away… Throwing caution to the wind, and realizing that a sense of duty wasn’t enough to sacrifice true love for, the blonde had flung herself out of the carriage when they had slowed down considerably to give the horses a rest. The princess then took off in a neck-breaking sprint. She didn’t look back as she abandoned some of the adornments on her body that would give her away as the princess, and she undid her extravagant hairdo, letting her blonde curls fall long and flail as she ran.

Clarisse was not sure where she was running to, all she knew was that she needed to get away. With her warm, emerald green cape tied around her shoulders, she pulled on its hood, hoping to blend in with the trees. That was when the woods ended, though, and she was quite clearly on someone’s property. Looking around frantically, Clarisse gasped for air before running again down the road. She came to an abrupt halt when she crashed into a firm chest.

James had a quiet existence. Quiet but busy. Life on the farm was busy and peaceful - just the way he liked it. He’d been on his own for nearly a year now, ever since his wife had died. First of all the silence had been deafening but he was starting to get used to it. The people in the near by town would stare at him and mutter behind his back. They pitied him and found him strange - a loner. James didn’t mind. He had no wish to be around anyone right now.

But that was about to change. Walking back from market with items he couldn’t grow or produce on his farm, James stopped when he saw the woman running at him. Somehow he expected that his day was about to get a whole lot more interesting than he’d ever imagined. Bag slung over his shoulder, both his hands were free to catch her before she hurt herself against him. Looking down he quirked one eyebrow up.

“It’s not everyday I find someone running through my land. Are you alright?”

Dieter stared at James in silence as the other’s words sunk in and provoked…some odd feeling he couldn’t identify. The things James promised though: D wanted. It hadn’t been long since he’d stolen into this place intent on robbing James…even less time since their fortuitous New Year’s encounter. Their friendship was young and undefined. James had shown Dieter no reason to distrust him yet…and had kept their carnal activities private. Perhaps he could dare to hope James would keep his promises as gentlemen must.

His eyes fell once more to the floor over James’ last sentence. Instead of answering he simply inhaled, regained his posture and turned back to the box to replace the collar gently. Without looking back he speaks, voice thankfully back to normal.

“I do note believe I h..have t’anked you properly for taking me in. I am note ungrateful for dat…nor for de discretion in certain matters of our friendship, hm. You have been a gracious host James.” Closing up the box he turns back around, hands fixed neatly behind his back. “I t’ink..enough packing for today yes? I could do wid a smoke ahnd some vodka to unwind…join me?” He asked politely as he made his way towards the doorway.

James was concerned for a moment or two that his attempt at calming D had not worked. Understanding the man who had tried to rob him was proving more difficult than he usually found with men in particular. He let out a sigh of relief when he could see the signs that his words had done the trick.

“You’re very welcome,” he replied and he smiled both in kindness and at how the other explained what they had been doing. What they were. He looked like a man pretending to be what he thought was expected of him and not being who he really wanted to be. Perhaps, James thought, he could help with some of that.

“That sounds perfect. There should be some vodka around here somewhere. I think I’ll stick to whisky though. We should find both in my drawing room. Otherwise I’ll have someone bring the vodka there.”

❝ well then…TEA it shall be. ❞ she gave his hand a small squeeze and moved to put the kettle on. things had been quiet ( by sanctuary standards, anyway ) for the past couple of days, so she was content to do it herself. for once, she wasn’t drowning in paperwork ( hard to do when you’re dead ), and she wanted to just enjoy the company of an OLD FRIEND and revel in the fact they were both alive.

His eyes never left Helen as she moved away to make the tea. Thinking back, he could see the difference that faking her death had made - both the advantages and disadvantages. Liberated from the world yet lonely. More so than ever before.

James didn’t see her lip tremble or the emotion in her eyes but he could hear it in her voice. It made him want to hold her but something held him back. He wasn’t sure where they stood anymore or where the line was. Crossing that line and making Helen uncomfortable was not something that James wanted to do his first day back in her life. Stepping forward, his hand reached out to her hip before hesitating. Instead he softly squeezed her shoulder.

“I’ve missed you too. But please, don’t blame yourself for my death. It was going to happen sooner or later. I knew that would be my last mission. I wanted it to be with you.”

Walking into the room, James sat down next to Dieter and passed him a plate of cookies.

D looked up and watched as James sat beside him, a smile forming as he accepted the plate. Picking one up, he let it hang from his mouth as he poured James a cup of tea. After stirring in the additives he’d seen James use over the time he’d spent there he paused, heart leaping as he saw the burn marks on the spoon. Faen. Removing the cookie from his mouth, he quickly placed the spoon in his mouth with a weak smile. He twisted the handle, as if he were only playing with spoon rather than attempting to hide the signs of his activities shortly before James had arrived.

A hum vibrated in his throat as he directed a small encouraging smile over at James, glad he was doing something good for the other and that James wouldn’t lock him up. Reaching out he rubbed his thumb gently over James’ other hand.

Not a monster.

The words resounded in his chest, filling it somehow so that neither heartbeat nor breath had room amongst it. The alien’s gaze got lost in the distance before slowly he shifted and let his head rest on James’ shoulder. His gaze remained far away and not a word was spoken…but in that moment Dieter was comfortable with the man..as if none of the unfortunate and scary elements he knew to be inevitable in life could touch him. In that moment at least..Dieter was safe.

The lost gaze that James’ witnessed, he put down to the drugs that he reasoned would be taking effect around now. James certainly wouldn’t have guessed what was truly going on in D’s head. Still, he enjoyed the physical closeness and the comfort that brought. Sitting back, he brought up a hand to caress D’s hair as he relished the quiet familiarity between the two of them. It was moments like this that gave James hope that he might actually be helping. That there might be a way through to D after all. It was what kept him trying - he couldn’t perceive giving up on the man.

D turned back to the naked man laying on the bed, steadying his own breath as he crawled on top, the fabric of his trousers dragging over James' flesh. Hesitantly, he leaned down to kiss his lover's lips, a far more caring gesture than common of the alien. When he leaned back he slipped the cap off the sterile scalpel in his right hand. "You certain?" D asked with concern written in his gaze. // look squirrel finally did the thing lol come play is much bored =p

James couldn’t help the flinch backwards that occurred when D straddled his lap. He kept his eyes on D and tried to not show his fear or disgust at the blood that was transferred to his skin or the knife that D had. Staring straight ahead, James stood tall as he felt, rather than saw, D circle him. Goosebumps formed and James shivered as he felt D’s finger drift over his skin. His anger was melting away even more so than before as he came to understand the situation better and think more clearly. The possibilities that came to mind and anticipation of what could happen caused a warm buzz to spread throughout his body. His eyes only moved when he saw D start to complete the circle around him and he watched him as he considered his options. Then, taking a deep breath, he let the towel drop to his feet - unwilling to let his insecurities and worries get to him in this moment. If D wanted to see him then he’d let him, and would wait to see what happened next.

“Exactly how appealing am I?”

“From…" D asked, dark eyes hardening. Was that it then? The man had followed him in attempts to keep him from sinking back into illegal behavior? He’d stayed clean…well off opium at least since before his first encounter with James. A marvelous stretch really and very few complications but he needed to end it before it became too weak and broke with a violent snap. At first it had simply been the dreams..now the thoughts plagued him while awake as well. It was only a matter of time and he preferred not to do that to James…even if it wasn’t to James at all. His right hand slid into his jacket pocket, ghosting over the knife there less in premeditation and more for the simple tactile sensation of it.

James tilted his head to the side as if to ask D if he was seriously asking that question. With a sigh, he watched the hand go into the pocket and wondered what D was thinking. He found most people so easy to read and yet had such difficulty with the man before him. Considering the situation for a moment, James decided that perhaps now wasn’t the best time to confront D on any drug habit he might be redeveloping. He needed to learn more about the other first.

D looked over at the collar, slowly taking it back. His grip tightened on the item,thumbs rubbing over the fabric in indecision. Sad eyes turned to James, trying to discern if the man really meant it: that it would be his choice. As James continued, D’s breaths grew shallow, finally pulling away from James and taking a few steps back as he averted his face with a frown. He was more tense than ever now as he tried to keep his face void of emotion. It was none of James’ business. Faen…why the fuck was he bringing all this dritt up anyway. It was in the past. It didn’t matter. Didn’t matter…just push it down…that place didn’t fucking matter anymore. Faen! Once he was sure his voice would come out an even deadpan, he spoke.
