Snidecar pond Painting

My somewhat daily compute took me past what I referred to as “Geddes Pond”. I happened to see an almost daily snapshot of Geddes Pond over a period of a couple of years. During winter the pond was usually frozen over and snow covered. Just a few sticks poking up. Spring brought new growth of reeds replacing the old dry brown with fresh green young sprouts. In summer it sometimes dried exposing a mud bottom. In the Autumn it was a riot of colour and that is the view I chose to paint. Oh yes! About the different name. I have Google maps to thank for that. There is a small stream, Snidecar Drain that feeds the pond and exits under Geddes Rd.

This is another of my tree series. A pine tree with a stained glass tree trunk. Somewhat similar in shape to Paul Klee’s “Pine Tree 1932”. Painted in a rainbow of watercolour pigments and black acrylic marker.

On the south bank of Father Themes, “Looking North from Lambeth” at the Mother of Parliaments. At 3.5x5 feet this is my first large painting and it is my vision of Westminster in the mists of fog. When my stepson first saw this he swore he could hear a RouteMaster bus in the background.

Bardo: Now For Something Completely Different #2 Painting

The grain elevator at Bardo, Alberta, is the second series of paintings I am working on.  The many shapes of this building intrigues me.  I am still developing compositions based on these shapes

With this painting I used Google maps to get an overhead view the lands around Bardo. Buildings and other man made artifacts appear as a tiny dot although the path of the railway is visible. The field boundaries, fallow land, major roads and the abandoned railway line, are depicted in lines and flat shapes.  Only the geometric shapes imposed on the land by man hint at his occupation.

A Tribute to Franz Kline Painting

A collage of 16 individual ink drawings after Franz Kline.  Each individual drawing is my response to one of Franz Kline much larger paintings. I was fascinated by several images of grids of small colour paintings I came across while browsing an online image library.  Although I have never given much consideration or study to Franz Kline’s body of work, the idea of a grid of small images after Kline’s very large work appealed to me.

It this case, the whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts.  Artists often speak of a place where the eye can rest.  There is no such place in the composition.  Each small drawing is unique to itself and when standing close in front of this collage, the viewer’s eye is compelled to move from each drawing to the next.  It is a mesmerising experience to stand a few feet away from it for viewing.
