Project hail mary and the martian act as perfect counterparts to each other because they both illuminate how much people need one another, one begining by showing that collaboration and the other begining showing its absence. In one story we have Mark Watney's searing loneliness at being the only man on an entire planet; the exhausting reality that every time something goes wrong, he has to save himself; and the terror that results from that (much downplayed by the film), almost verging on paranoia: Mars won't stop trying to kill me. And on the other side, we have Rocky and Grace's joy at finding another person adrift in space, the many times they save each other, and how clear it is that they wouldn't be able to succeed without each other's help, the microbiologist and the engineer whose skill sets complete each other, and who love to the point of self-sacrifice.

And of course, both stories end the same way: the crew of the Hermes mutinying in order to return and save Mark, Grace giving up any hope of seeing earth again to return and save Rocky. I like that in both stories, the rescuers do not face certain death: there is no way out of the fact that the course they thought their lives would take will be forever altered by their choices. Once you have turned back for someone, you are not able to travel the same road again: to save someone is to be changed by them.

the hail mary thing i'm thinking about rn is how i, too, would find it both helpful and infuriating having a huge rock guy around going "how long since last sleep question" whenever I started to fuck things up. Yeah, Rocky, it has been a while since last sleep. Also fuck you. Thanks.

mark watney should have on all accounts died on that planet, but his sheer will, strength, hope, and determination kept him alive. the support of an entire world of people brought him home

do americans really care that much about space missions like the martian is leading me to believe? like yeah ok i guess the mission per se would make the news but other than that? do they really broadcast all of NASA's business?

IDK if everyone but there's a massive amount of people who like stand outside starbase to look at some fucking tanks being welded besides the launches and tests, and the amount of YouTube channels like Scott Manley and The Everyday Astronaut who have a fairly big audience and are really good and reverse engineering and figuring out things, so maybe not super big but there would be a very dedicated audience who could figure out mask was alive if NASA didn't disclose it at first.

Rewatching the ds9 episode where Sisko builds the ancient Bajoran spaceship and it really is THE prime example that this man belongs in a Lowe's. Unfortunately he keeps getting dragged into Political Intrigue but his soul longs to be comparing different samples of ceramic tile and going "very nice very nice." He should be weighing the pros and cons of getting a green egg smoker or an offset smoker, with a bunch of random 2x4s and drill bits and a fire pit already in his cart, while Jake stands off to the side bored out of his mind like "DAD WE DIDN'T EVEN COME HERE FOR A GRILL." And Sisko is like "well it doesn't hurt to look son. I might wanna come back for this later"
