James: hey man! happy birthday!!!!! aw man, i hope it's the best and you just have like a really good day and shit :D
.rlyronnie:
The second James greeted him ā or rather, told him that he wasnāt late, but whatever, semantics ā Ronnie found his cheeks hurting immeasurably as his face split into a wide, toothy grin. It soon evaporated when James explained just why Darren had been there, his previous smile being traded out for a look of pure bewilderment. It wasnāt entirely out of the ordinary for Darren to be spending time with James, not really given that the two of them were best friends, but Ronnie still felt that same ripple of jealousy at the thought of Darren always having one up on him in every aspect of his life ā including his friendship with James. And now James was telling him they were playing billiards? What the hell couldnāt that guy do? Ronnie wasnāt even entirely sure he knew what billiards was, much less the rules.
āOh, um⦠Cool?ā he commented, his forehead creasing as he arched an eyebrow.
When James turned on the spot, Ronnie eagerly followed him inside ā grateful for the distraction, if nothing else ā and stared around in wonderment. For all intents and purposes, they were just standing in a kitchen. An every day, bog standard kitchen, at that. But it wasnāt just any kitchen, but James Lynchās kitchen! Okay, well, no, technically it was, like, his dadās kitchen⦠Alright, not the point! The point was, he was standing in the kitchen that James had probably prepared several breakfasts, lunches, and dinners for himself in. The point was that he was standing in the house that James called home, and he was actually getting to hang out with the boy he had an enormous, all-encompassing crush on.
āOh, Iām good, man. Thanks,ā he nodded, offering a shy smile in response. He had eaten before heād left, and it was just as well he had. While he really liked chicken, and was pretty sure that seventeen hours wasnāt all that long, he trusted Jamesā judgement and figured he knew his stuff. Hell, Ronnie wasnāt even sure what e-coli was, just that he knew it probably wasnāt something he wanted in his stomach. If James thought it wasnāt safe, heād tend to agree. āYeah, totally. Itās probably all, like, nastyā¦ā
Cringing inwardly at himself, he hoped James wouldnāt take much notice of his throwaway comment. In fact, he figured James would probably just shrug it off, but that didnāt diminish the strange sense of embarrassment coursing through him, and he only hoped he wasnāt blushing. He had this undeniable obsession with eagerly agreeing with absolutely anything and everything that James, even if he had no clue what the other boy was talking about. His desire to impress the boy tended to cloud his better judgement, and he had pretty much mastered the art of making a fool of himself ā a sentiment he was fairly sure Levi would agree with him on.
When James opted for disposing of the barely-day-old salad, Ronnie bit back a whole plethora of comments that were threatening to spill from his lips. Aggressively refraining from telling James just how smart he was ā his idiot brain even insisting that he tell James that he was āa saviour among menā ā he merely nodded, and poked his nose into the fridge, before settling on a simple can of pepsi. His mom had always taught both him and Rhett to have enough manners when in the presence of others, especially when in the homes of someone who wasnāt family. And, while heād long since forgotten that back in Levi and Joeās apartment ā his hungry appetite always getting the better of him ā he figured heād take heed in his motherās advice for once and not scavenge the Lynchās fridge.
āAwesome, thanks, man,ā he smiled again.
Staring around him at the wide space of the kitchen, he searched for things to talk about, hoping heād be able to provide some snippet from his life that might impress James. Instead, all he could think about was how heād spent all of the night before cleaning out the space beneath his bed after Levi had smeared a whole bowl of something gross, unidentifiable, and seemingly very appealing to ants on the carpet there. He was pretty sure that was the opposite of what James would wanna hear, though, certain that the mere thought of the germs there would only make him queasy.
āSo, you wanna, like⦠get started?ā he asked, eager to get to the fun part. Or, at least, he hoped it would be fun.
When heād offered to help James to rehearse for the new school play, it hadnāt been an entirely selfless act. In all honesty, he didnāt have much clue what their show consisted of, but he figured if it meant he could make James smile and spend time alone with him, then it was pretty much a win for everyone.
While Miss Parker had tried drilling the ins and outs of Shakespeare into their skull on a near-daily basis, sheād never made much headway with Ronnie and Levi. However, since hearing that James was going to be playing Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing heād done enough research himself to know just who he would and wouldnāt be kissing, and what to expect when he went to see him in the show.
āHey, um, quick question⦠Who do you want me play?ā he mused.
When Ronnie pulled a can of Pepsi from the fridge, it took a combination of all of Jamesā self-restraint and manners to not point out that he should opt for a Pepsi Max instead. There was way less sugar in the latter and heād watched a video online of the black tar-like substance that curdled itself when you stripped the rest of the ingredients away. But he supposed that one can of full fat Pepsi wasnāt totally going to destroy Ronnieās immune system and push him closer to developing type-2 diabetes, so he held his tongue and gave the other boy a strained sort of smile.
āNo problem,ā he shrugged, peering in the fridge door and grabbing some carrot sticks for himself. Heād taken to eating them with salsa dip, but then Taylor had accidentally dropped the salsa jar on the floor and scooped up the remains into a tiny Tupperware box, which James thought was just about the most unsanitary thing he had ever heard in his life. He and his sister didnāt fight often, but their father had needed to come downstairs and attempt to bring an end to that particular argument. Wrinkling his nose at the offending plastic tub, he quickly shut the fridge door and turned back to Ronnie.
āSure thing!ā James nodded eagerly, talking around a mouthful of carrot. He quickly remembered his manners and pressed the back of his hand to his mouth until he stopped chewing.
āOh, I have a spare copy here, man!ā he announced, reaching over the island in the middle of the kitchen and picking up the two books left lying there, handing one off to Ronnie in the process.
Lifting his head at Ronnieās question, James knew that his cheeks were suddenly colouring with a light blush. There were certain scenes he really needed to perfect if he wanted his performance to be authentic and flow smoothly, but those scenes involved a number of lines that a few boys in his class always suffixed with a āno homoā when they were forced to read them aloud.
āUh⦠itās totally up to you, man,ā he said as casually as he could. The nonchalance of his tone lost some of its effect given that he was anxiously rubbing at the back of his neck. Dropping his hand back by his side and hoisting himself up onto the kitchen stool, he gently ran his thumb up the spine of his own copy.
āI mean, thereās like⦠a couple of Benedick and Beatrice scenes that I still sorta like, get muddled up with and shit,ā he admitted. He didnāt know if Ronnie would think that was weird, even though he had no clue if Ronnie even knew anything about the main characters.
āBut thereās some shit that I guess I could use brushing on up on like uh⦠fuck, the Don Pedro and Benedick scenes, I figure?ā he lied, pulling the first random character name from his head. He looked up and gave Ronnie a sheepish smile.
āTotally up to you, man. I mean, you donāt even need to do this soā¦ā he trailed off, knowing his stuttering would only make the blush he wore worse.

.rlyronnie:
Ronnie felt giddy. He was floating on air, his heart was all aflutter, and a bunch of other really shitty clichĆ©ās that he was sure Max would either love or hate him for. In this instance, he was sure sheād let it slide. Quite frankly, heād been a bag of nerves telling her the news. Heād hammered his fist against her apartment door, only to find Ollie on the other side. Heād look less than pleased to see Ronnie, who had merely grinned at his boss and invited himself inside without so much as a second thought. Max had been nestled on the couch looking exceptionally sleepy, her laptop settled onto her lap, when sheād glanced up and spotted him, greeting him with a warm smile of her own.
Heād blustered and mumbled his way through his explanation, telling her that somehow heād gotten lucky enough to be invited around to James Lynchās house. Him. Ronnie Winters was going to Jamesā house. He was going to the house of the boy heād been crushing on for so long. And okay, sure, it probably didnāt mean a whole lot. He was just helping him with school stuff, but he was crazy excited about it. Theyād never really spent time alone outside of school, the only times they ever hung out away from a classroom usually including Rhett, Taylor, Brooke, and ā ugh ā Darren. Now he was getting to hang out with James on his own.
Heād be lying if he said he hadnāt put a little too much weight on Jamesā text to him, the sheer notion that if he were gay then Ronnie would be the kind of guy heād date. He was grasping at straws, considering James was alarmingly heterosexual and clearly not interested in Ronnie in a romantic sense, but it still sent his heart soaring when heād read the words, and Max had been a little more enthusiastic about it than Levi, who he was certain thought he was a bit of a dummy.
Now, he was rocking back and forth on the spot as he waited outside of Jamesā house. Heād rung the doorbell, and found himself craning his neck to look around him at the land surrounding the building. I mean, how freaking cool? Most people, like he and Rhett, lived at home with their parents in, like, normal houses, or apartments like at Messina. Heād never been to a fucking vineyard. So. Fucking. Cool.
Clutching the straps of his backpack, that was currently clinging to his shoulders, his face split into a wild smile when the door opened. Who heād been expecting to see was James. Who he hadnāt expected to see was Darren. Ugh. Darren raised an eyebrow at the sight of him, his expression confused as he glanced back at James ā who was standing behind him, looking a little flushed ā and towards Ronnie once again. With a shrug, he waved a little hand at Ronnie, before giving James a quick hug goodbye, and a brief punch on the arm ā ugh, why was masculinity so fragile? Just hug your friend, man! Or Iāll do it for you, jeez, Ronnie thought ā and heading out the door to whereever it was he went when he wasnāt indirectly ruining Ronnieās life.
His shoulders tense, biting down the scowl that threatened to break through his features, Ronnie waited for Darren to disappear, before turning his attention to James and forcing a convincing smile onto his face. Okay, forcing might not have been the right choice of word. It wasnāt super difficult for him to smile when around the other boy, considering he held the strange ability to make Ronnie feel all kinds of warm and fuzzy inside without ever actually doing anything.
āHey, man,ā he greeted him, his hands still tightly clasped around hid the straps of his bag. That was the only way he could stop them from trembling, thatās for sure. Luckily, he could just put that down to the cold should James ask, and he wouldnāt actually have to explain how nervous, and excited, he was to be hanging out with the other boy.
His mind was still on Darren, however, and he couldnāt help but wonder if heād intruded. Darren looked confused, as though he hadnāt been expecting to see Ronnie, and he wondered if maybe James was embarrassed to be seen with him, or if he hadnāt told his friend. Or maybe Darren wasnāt as freaking cool as everyone kept trying to convince him (a fact that Ronnie was more than aware of). Hell, maybe Darren was just jealous that he was getting kicked out while Ronnie got to spend time with his best friend.
āSo, I wasnāt, like⦠uh, intruding or anything was I? I donāt think Iām earlyā¦ā He shrugged, his eyes darting towards a clock on the wall, he could just about see it over Jamesā shoulder (not that he was, like, snooping in on his house or anything). āIām actually usually sorta late, soā¦ā
Having Darren show up to his house to play music about an hour before Ronnie was due to arrive and help him rehearse, did funny things to Jamesā state of mind. By āfunnyā, he meant confusing, and by āconfusingā, it was more a mish mosh of hysterical screaming inside his head. Heād heard his doorbell ring and ran downstairs (as quickly as he would allow himself, all the while thinking about the dangers of tripping and falling to his death), frantically towel drying his hair and wondering why Ronnie was showing up so early, only to throw open the door and see Darren standing there. Suddenly, cartwheeling down the stairs and landing headfirst at the bottom didnāt seem so particularly unappealing.
When Darren mentioned something about writing a new song that he wanted to run by James first, the boy made a casual attempt to restart about fifty percent of his vital organs and ushered his best friend inside. He wasnāt going to turn down spending time with Darren and that guitar of his, although he did cast a guilty glance towards the hallway clock as the minute hand ticked closer to Ronnieās impending arrival.
Ever since heād found out that Ronnie supposedly liked Darren, before the rumour was shot down by Ronnie himself, James had been sceptical about what he should believe. Taylor seemed insistent that it was all a big misunderstanding, although James wasnāt sure why she was so invested in the first place ā he figured she was most probably trying to help James not feel quite so betrayed by his new friend. It wasnāt like Ronnie knew James liked Darren though, so he doubted the other boy knew what he was doing to James. Plus, itās not like he could be held at fault for liking Darren ā if he actually was crushing on him, as that was still very much up in the air.
The thing was, ever since heād talked things over with Rory ā coming out to his cousin in the process and feeling like the weight that had such a palpable and heavy presence on his shoulders had been marginally lifted ā he supposed that he saw Ronnie differently. Not fundamentally, pivotally, my-life-is-changed differently, but heād allowed himself to admit that he thought Ronnie was⦠kind of cute. The amount of dirt streaked across his face at any given time after practise made James sweat in ways he wasnāt proud of, but Ronnie was fun and friendly and didnāt treat James like some sort of freak when heād been close to tears after seeing the bruise on Ronnieās knee after a particularly nasty incident involving the other team playerās bootās apparent grudge against Ronnieās shin guard. James hadnāt even known those things could shatter.
Nevertheless, James had been encouraged by Rory to admit that he thought Ronnie was attractive, his guilt mildly satiated by the fact that Ronnie was actually gay instead of painfully heterosexual like Darren. But the realisation that he might sort of think that Ronnieās face was really freaking cute in a kissable sort of way had the tendency to leave him feel frazzled and mildly distressed. He hadnāt even told Taylor, and figured it was something he should keep to himself and hope Rory remained tight lipped about.
All he had to do to keep calm was just never be in the same place as Darren and Ronnie at the same time and he would probably be able to keep his emotions in check, so it felt like the doctor had informed him that the last tetanus shot in the world had been given to the patient before him when Darren opted to leave, opened the door and jumped a little to find Ronnie on the other side.
āOh. Ronnie. Hey!ā James squeaked, his voice breaking at once.
He watched Darren and Ronnie eye each other warily and the reminder that Ronnie might have been lying about not liking Darren lead to James battling the urge to call on his sister and politely ask her if she would take him out on her boat with her and then promptly drown him.
When Darren quickly pulled him into a goodbye hug, James instructed his nostrils to not pull at the familiar scent of Darrenās aftershave and deodorant combo that heād fretted about getting a rash from before, and simply hugged his friend back, arms loose around Darrenās torso. His hands fell away before Darrenās did and he hoped neither boy would ask him about how red his face was.
āSee you, Daz,ā he called to the other boy, closing the door and then turning to Ronnie. He shook his head frantically when his friend claimed that he was too early.
āNo, man! No, youāre right on time, actually. Darren was just over playing some⦠billiards,ā he finished, remembering just in time that the knowledge of Darrenās musical talent wasnāt widely spread. He hoped Ronnie wouldnāt ask to play as well, because James didnāt know the first thing about billiards. Quickly, he jerked his head towards the kitchen, gesturing for Ronnie to follow.
āDo you uh, want something to eat, man? I was just about to make lunch. Like, I could make you a sandwich or something? Taylor left some chicken salad in the fridge from last night but that was nearly like⦠seventeen hours ago and itās probably already crawling with e-coli and shit,ā he said, opening the fridge and casting a dubious look at the cling-film wrapped bowl.
āActually, Iām just going to⦠get rid of that. But help yourself to whatever, dude!ā he decided, pulling the bowl out and tearing the cling-film off. He emptied the contents into the bin, holding his breath all the while so he wouldnāt breathe in any sort of bacteria.

James: hey!!! happy birthday katie! have such a good day, dude. we'll miss you in the shop and stuff though!!
.rorysmd:
Aye, alrighā, alrighā. We are, anā yer gonna have te dealĀ ācause this is a one off. Out of yer league? Whaā makes ye say thaā? Any family of mine can get anyoneĀ they want, alrighā? Anā if this Ronnie saysĀ he doesnāt like Darren, donāt ye believe him? Or are ye jusā worried heāll try somethinā with yer wee straight boy?
Aye, I think we are. But, eh, we donāt haveĀ te, if this got weird, I jusā, eh⦠Wanna help.
Well, theyāre just - I dunno, theyāre both cute and like, athletic and shit so. And you know Iām like, technically adopted, so I donāt think that counts, Rory. I wasnātĀ worried until you said that. But like Daz is straight so... and Ronnie is... God I dunno, heās my friend and I donāt think I should be thinking about him that way.
Nah, itās like, I appreciate you helping and stuff. And you are. That just sorta makes it seem like, real. Shit.
.rorysmd:
Ye only think heās the bestĀ ācause yer blinded by hormones. Ye know, I think ye should aim higher. What about this wee Finn or Ronnie ye mentioned? Are they single? When yeāre more comfortable, I meanā¦
Aye, I know what ye mean. Tāis a bitĀ fuckinā scary. But aye,Ā ācourse I would. Name a time anā place anā iāll be there.
He canāt help being straight, just like I canāt help being... not. Aw man, is this... are we really having boy talk? Shit, man. Taylor did the exact same thing, but... I dunno! Theyāre both like, way out of my league anyway. And Finn likes Atticus and Ronnie saysĀ he doesnāt like Darren, but I dunno.
Are we like... really organising me... coming out?
.rorysmd:
Right. Always knew he was a bit of an eejit.
Anā have ye ever thought about maybe tellinā those kids? Lucy anā Ronnie anā Finn? Ye and I both know yer daāll be grand about it, but thaā doesnāt make it any easier⦠Ye know, I can always help ye? Maybe talk to him with ye, just for a little moral supporā anā shite.
Shit! Cāmon, man! Stop that, you know heās not that bad. Darrenās like, the best.
Iāve thoughtĀ about it, but I psyched myself up enough just to tell you. Youād like, do that?
.rorysmd:
That sucks. Heās definitely not, eh, interested?
Nah, I know what yer sayinā kid. Iām glad ye felt comfortable tellinā me though, alrighā? Yer da doesnātā¦? Ye know ye donāt haveĀ to say anythinā, or tell anyone, righā? Ye do things at yer own pace Iām a messĀ and we all feckinā know it, like, buā I never had any problem cominā out to me ma or nothinā⦠But it isnāt always that easy fer some, and the fact that ye told me anā Taylor already is pretty brave⦠Thereās no righā or wrong way te say these things, and thereās no rule sayinā ye have to any time soon, alrighā?
Nah. He just... likes girls.
Yeah, I just... youāre really comfortable and shit. And so are my friends like, Ronnie and Lucy and the super popular kids like Finn. But I dunno, I sorta wanna tell my deadĀ ācause I know heāll be fine. Itās just hard to say and shit, I guess.
.rorysmd:
Righā. So ye, eh⦠Ye like him, aye? Anā heās notā¦Ā
Ye know it is true, though, aye? Like, thereās nothinā wrong with, eh⦠Being⦠Well, who ye are.
Pretty much, yeah.
I know thereās nothing really like, wrong with it. Itās just hard to say and I dunno why. It was easier than I thought itād be to like, tell you and shit. Not justĀ ācause youāre my cousin or anything but like, you get it. I figured... youāve been through that before. Just, with me, itās not girls as well, man. Just... yeah. Only Taylor knows. And I still canāt even say it properly in front of her.
.rorysmd:
Whatāre ye talkinā about? Ye said this is about wee Darren, aye? Are ye anā him⦠ye know.
Uh, not exactly.Ā āCause heās like... not. And Iām... I am.
.rorysmd:
Cāmon, Jamesy. Ye know, if yer really uncomfortable itās grand and Iāll lay off ye, but⦠Yer lookinā more frazzled now than ye were the time I got gravy on yer copy of Romeo and Juliet, anā I just wanne make sure yer okayā¦
PleaseĀ donāt remind me of that. It makes me sweat. I dunno, man. Itās like, one of those things where you grow up and like, you get told it isnāt wrong or shit.Ā āCause thatās what Taylor and I got taught. But even though I know it isnāt wrong itās like, shit, I dunno, when I realise thatās me, I still canāt say it.
