Here is a snippet of my first Sterek story so please be kind! It’s not the start of the story but a section I’m ok with sharing

Derek shakes off the memory and once again wishes things could have turned out differently. He was never meant to be Alpha. He was never meant to stay in Beacon Hills. Maybe this was his penance for being one of the few Hale’s to escape the fire, being perpetually saddled with opinionated and somewhat reckless beta’s. And other various supernatural beings. And Stiles, who has always belonged in his own category. From the moment Derek saw how Stiles took the supernatural in his stride, how brave and resilient he was, he knew that Stiles was someone he wanted in his pack. Even when he wanted Stiles far away from the danger, Derek still wanted him by his side.

He knows he’s gone about it the wrong way. Trying to help Scott. To help Jackson and Isaac and Erica and Boyd. Derek has made a lot of mistakes but to be fair he was a lost and broken 19 year old when he encounter Scott and Stiles that day in the woods. And being an Alpha, being a leader to others, was never what he was supposed to be. He wasn’t supposed to be preyed upon by Kate - losing most of his family because he thought someone loved him for who he was. He wasn’t supposed to care about these people, to worry about their relationships and that they had somewhere safe to sleep, enough food to eat.

“Derek, would you tell Jackson that we don’t need the stairs to be a ‘grand staircase’. He isn’t going to be making dramatic entrances to every pack meeting for the rest of our lives.” Isaac calls out amidst the bickering, causing Derek’s head to thump again.

“Derek, will you tell Isaac that he doesn’t need a walk in closet when all his fashion choices are tragic and basic white boy attire.” Jackson counters looking Isaac up and down with disdain before flicking at Isaac’s jacket and messing up his hair.

“What the hell? You’re white too!” Isaac states, his confusion plain to see. He pushes Jackson’s hand away and tries to do the same to Jackson. Dodging out the way Jackson just laughs before Isaac tackles him to the ground.

“Oh for fucks sake.” Derek mutters looking to the heavens for patience. Or answers as to why he let Stiles talk him into this. All he sees when he looks up is the charred remains of his family home. All he hears is two of his idiot beta’s wrestling in the dirt at his feet. This is definitely his penance for all the bad decisions he has made in his life.

“Do I have to turn the hose on you two?” Stiles asks coming to stand beside Derek. The proximity calms Derek. There is still a few feet between their bodies but Derek feels a warmth spread through him.

“Please do!” Erica says leaning on Stiles shoulder, Stiles wraps an arm around her waist. The friendship these two have developed both irritates Derek and pleases him. “I think I speak for everyone when I say we are all down to watch some naked werewolf mud wrestling.”

“You don’t speak for everyone.” Derek growls out, wishing he was one of those people who couldn’t visualise things in his mind. He rubs at him temple as if he could erase the images, maybe he is paying for terrible things he did in a past life as well.

“As much as I like the sound of that, I don’t think I want to see Isaac and Jackson naked again. I got enough of that in high school.” Stiles laughs and Derek tenses.

“Ooohhh really?” Erica asks, Derek doesn’t have to look at her to know she has a smug look on her face. “I had no idea about the three of you, how did you keep that a secret?”

“What?” Stiles asks and Derek can feel him jump. “No. Not like. I meant. Locker room. Lacrosse. Practice. I. You. That’s not. That’s just mean Erica.” Stiles smells of embarrassment and Derek wonders when he was able to pick up Stiles emotions so clearly. Fear and anger, arousal and pain are the easiest to distinguish and usually all Derek can pinpoint in other people - even his beta’s - but Stiles has so many distinct emotions that Derek has learnt over the years.

“As if Stiles could have pulled one of us in high school, let alone both.” Jackson teases and Derek knows Stiles is flipping him the bird without having to look.

“Just goes to prove how dumb high schoolers are, Stiles was a catch.” Erica fires back.

“Was? What about am? As in still? As in currently is a catch? Stiles is still a catch. Right? Derek, tell them I’m still a catch. Tell me I’m not already past my prime! Please, lie to me. Someone!” Stiles flaps his hand around as if trying to coax the words out of somebody. Derek brain freezes, he can’t form thoughts.

“Right! Of course you are. And you could have totally got us in high school.” Isaac slaps at Jackson as Stiles looks around confused. “Or. Now.”

Derek can almost feel his eyes turning red as he looks at Isaac.

“I’m mean not now, now. Because well. You are.. um.” Isaac looks at Derek, then Stiles before turning to look at Jackson.

“He means you’re hot Stiles. But you’re too much like our mother or brother now. And we were. I mean I was being a dick. Sorry.” Jackson looks at Derek for reassurance and Derek’s small nod is all he can manage.

“Mother?” Stiles squeaks out. “What does that mean? How am I a mother? How am I your mother?” He looks frantically around, Derek does his best not to make eye contact. God damn it, he just wanted his beta’s to stop squabbling like toddlers.

“Oh food is here. I can hear Lydia’s car.” Erica exclaims pulling a bewildered looking Stiles towards the makeshift table they have made out of a door placed on top of tree stumps.

“Isaac and Jackson need to go wash up before they get near the food.” Stiles calls over his shoulder, glaring when he hears them mutter ‘yes mum’.

Derek stares after Stiles and Erica as they make room on the table for the food, he can’t believe they are all here helping him to rebuild his home. He can’t believe this mix of people feel like home.

“You know we would be ok with you telling him how you feel, right?” Jackson stands in Derek’s eye line, shaking water off his hands. Derek tears his focus from what Stiles is doing to glare at his beta.

“He’s right Derek, we are fine with it.” Isaac adds turning off the one functioning tap in the yard.

“I don’t know what you are talking about.” Derek retorts as his gaze lands back on Stiles and how he smiles at Erica with such fondness. It makes him smile.

“Are we still pretending this isn’t a thing?” Isaac asks Jackson quietly, just not quietly enough that Derek’s hearing can’t pick it up. Derek is confused. Sure he cares about Stiles, but he cares for everyone in his pack. And maybe he gives Stiles a bit more leeway when it comes to arguing with him, the flash of red eyes doesn’t have the same effect on a human so he does say things to Derek that the rest wouldn’t dream of. And as a result Derek is talked into things that he wouldn’t normally let himself be talked in to. Like rebuilding his house for the pack. Or the camping trip he let Stiles talk him into last month. But that’s because he’s human, not because Derek feels any type of way towards Stiles.

“There is no thing, go help get the food from Lydia’s car. And let Stiles get his food first.” Derek says as he pushes Jackson and Isaac towards the car that has now stopped near their designated eating and planning area. When he is met with identical questioning stares he adds “Don’t look at me like that, you all eat so much you know there is no food left for anyone else if you get there first.”

Derek deliberately ignores Jackson’s mutterings about how Derek didn’t mention letting Allison or Lydia eat first. He knows those two will go toe to toe with anyone of the werewolves and come out on top when it comes to getting what they want. Stiles is more inclined to look after everyone else and then claim he wasn’t even hungry when there is nothing left for him. It’s not about favouring Stiles, it’s knowing his pack as individuals and making sure everyone is looked after. That Stiles isn’t the one always taking care of everyone else.

“Here I grabbed you something before there wasn’t anything left.” Stiles says handing Derek a paper plate overloaded with pizza. “Someone needs to teach these vultures some manners.” Stiles calls out loudly, only to be answered with the beta’s calling out a thank you to Lydia for picking up the food. “Not what I meant but good job on saying thank you. It’s a start.” Stiles huffs a laugh as he shakes his head.

“Thank you Stiles.” Derek says. It feels heavier than just thanking Stiles for bringing him food and he supposes it is. He owes Stiles so much gratitude for a countless number of reasons.

I haven’t written much more of my sequel to Hurts to Leave, but I’m not ready to share any of my Sterek fic yet so this is what I have for you.

“I think I need too. I don’t think it’s healthy to be the stations punching bag anymore. I. I want to stay in LA though. I think. I don’t know maybe I’m just being overly sensitive, I mean. People joke around with each other at work all the time.” Buck rambles still pressed into Tommy’s chest as tries to justify - to minimise - how he is being treated. The thought of actually leaving the only home he has known suddenly scaring him more than enduring years more of the treatment he’s experienced in the last few months.

“I mean, yeah but to an extent.” Tommy says sitting back to look at Buck. “People joking with each other is entirely different to being the only person who is the constant punchline amongst the group. That’s not you being overly sensitive, that’s harassment. It’s bullying. And not how a workplace is supposed to be, whether they claim to be a family or not, it’s not professional. And why are they excluding you? You are literally family to Chim. He is your brother in law, he should be your biggest supporter at the station. What the hell is he doing?”

Buck feels like he should defend Chim, defend the 118, but he can’t. He agrees with Tommy and it feels so good to have someone else voice his thoughts. It feels so good to have someone else be angry on his behalf. It makes him feel a little less crazy and a little less like he’s overreacting. He has missed this. Missed having someone in his corner while still knowing they would tell him he was being ridiculous if he really was overreacting.
