Nilsen / Dahmer vs. Meiwes

While Dennis Nilsen, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Armin Meiwes are all murderers who fed upon (or wished to feed upon) the remains of their male lovers, the latter of the trio stands out for a number of reasons. Below I will point out the similarities and disparities as I have noticed them. I will use the present tense as two of the three men are still alive.

• Both Nilsen and Dahmer are serial killers while Meiwes is not. While the definition of a serial killer has always been riddled with ambiguity, there is no arguing that Meiwes is a serial killer as he only claimed one victim.

• Meiwes required consent for his acts while Dahmer and Nilsen did not. Meiwes published an advert on a cannibal forum seeking a male volunteer. Dahmer and Nilsen never disclosed their intents to their victims beforehand, and their victims’ consent was not desired.

• All three served in the military of their respective home countries.

• Both Nilsen and Dahmer struggled with severe alcoholism while there is no mention of Meiwes having suffered any kind of substance abuse.

• Dahmer and Nilsen killed because they wanted companions that would not leave them. Meiwes had been entertaining cannibalistic fantasies since a childhood obsession with Hansel & Gretel (a Grimm’s Fairy Tale wherein a witch fattens two children up to eat them and they, in the original version of the tale, instead trick the witch into the oven). While Meiwes’ father did abandon his family, neglect does not appear to be a key motivator in Meiwes’ paraphilia.

• All three craved control over their victims.

• Nilsen and Dahmer performed sexual acts on corpses in addition to saving/eating their victims’ remains. Meiwes is not thought to have done so.

• Both Nilsen and Damer had close relationships with one of their grandparents. Dahmer was close to his grandmother and Nilsen was close to his grandfather. Meiwes, meanwhile, had a very formative relationship with one of his mother’s friends, a woman named Ulla.

• All three stored their victims’ bodies in their apartments.

• Both Nilsen and Dahmer were almost caught by the police. Dahmer was almost caught when victim Konerak Sinthomphone was able to escape his apartment and run into two girls who called the police. Dahmer was able to convince the police that they were lovers just having a disagreement.  One of Nilsen’s victims woke up while being strangled and called the police, but the police did nothing, thinking it was a domestic disagreement as well. Meiwes had no such interference.

Charles Rigoulot was a French weightlifter, professional wrestler, racing driver and actor. During World War II, he was imprisoned for punching a Nazi officer. He didn’t remain incarcerated for long. He managed to escape from his cell by bending the iron bars and allegedly allowed other prisoners to escape with him, knocking out the guard on the way out.

Damaris Reyes Rivas (pictured left) was only 15 years-old when she was brutally murdered by a group of MS-13 gang members on January 8th 2017. Venus Romero Iraheta (pictured right) was one of the 10 gang members who participated in the attack. She was only 17 years-old at the time. Damaris lived in Gaithersburg, Maryland prior to her death, however she was killed in Springfield, Virginia. 

Damaris’ murder is believed to be motivated by the December 2016 murder of 21 year-old Christian Sosa Rivas. Christian was Venus’ boyfriend, and he referred to himself as the leader of his MS-13 clique, known as the Harrison Clique. At some point before his death, Christian reportedly angered members of two other MS-13 cliques: the Coronados and the Via Satellites. It is believed that the leaders of those cliques were angry about Christian falsely claiming his title as a gang leader. On the day of Christian’s murder, Damaris allegedly texted him and asked him to meet her at a park in Dumfries, Virginia. Damaris herself was actually not at the park, though. Instead, a group of gang members from the other cliques met Christian there and proceeded to attack him. 

On the day Damaris was murdered, she was asked to meet Venus and the others at Lake Accotink Park in Springfield. Damaris thought they were meeting to smoke marijuana, but when she showed up, she was ambushed by the group of gang members from Christian’s clique, all ranging from ages 15 to 21. A series of cell phone videos revealed that they tortured and interrogated Damaris for several minutes. One video shows Damaris being forced to stand naked in the 21-degree weather, while another video shows Damaris laying in a pile of leaves in her own blood.

Venus was the main assailant in the attack. She admitted to investigators that she said “see you in fucking hell” before she stabbed Damaris 13 times. Damaris was then left to die; she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries around 20 minutes later. Other MS-13 gang members went back to the park to retrieve her body, and they eventually dumped her in a puddle near an industrial park. Damaris’ body was found about a month later.

All of the 10 people involved in Damaris’ murder have been convicted. Venus was most recently sentenced; she received 40 years in prison. She offered an apology at her sentencing, stating, “I know I made the biggest mistake of my life. I am sorry.”
