for the past 2 years or so the predominant career advice i’ve been given by every single person in a position to give advice (bosses, bosses’ bosses, career coaches) was “you need to keep talking to people” 😭😭😭 i have accepted that it is the only way to get a new job and have successfully landed a new job, but why can’t i just see the vacancy, send my cv, give a reference, get an interview? why do i need to keep chatting to people in the very transparent disguise of selling myself? moreover, why can’t the work i excel at within my own department be recognized and sufficient grounds for a promotion?

You're not selling yourself, you're just having a little coffee! You're asking people about their work, saying 'oh, that's interesting, you're saying this, but from my view, I'm seeing this, so how do those two perspectives reconcile' and you're both leaving from that conversation knowing more about your job, their job, and the organisation/field you both work in! You kind of have to go into the conversation open to the possibility that the other person has something new and interesting to contribute to your broader worldview, which makes you better at your job! And on the other hand, maybe you have something to contribute that makes the other person better at their job. This is the main problem I see with people who hate networking - you're tying it to a very specific goal, which is getting a new job, but it can also make you better at the job you're currently doing. If you're doing work that sets you above everyone else, of course that should be recognised, but sometimes many people vying for the same promotion opportunity are good at their jobs and then being known as a person that takes an interes in things that fall outside of their direct scope and contributes to the organisation as a whole can give you an edge.

#side effect of 'new job' is that now i'm talking a lot to people who want to obtain 'new job' and these conversations have made me realise #people who hate networking have no idea what networking is. it's literally having a little coffee with a guy from work. i spend like three #hours a week having a little coffee with guys from work (gender neutral) and talking about our weekends and if they're doing anything #fun at the office lately and somehow this is considered not only acceptable by my boss but gets noted every year in my performance #review as something i'm doing exceptionally well. elite employee at having a little coffee and chatting shit #had an absolutely infuriating conversation today with someone who was thinking about applying at a job at an org i worked at for a bit #and i was like well go have a little coffee with the department head and she was like well i don't know if i want to work there :(#and i said okay well one way of finding out if it's a match is having a little coffee with the department head #and she was like well then what if i decide i don't like it and don't want to apply :(#and i was like well then you're in the exact same situation as now only you got to have a little coffee #genuinely don't know if i'm a fish asking everyone what this 'water' is they keep talking about but how about you have a little coffee #and then as a result of having had your little coffees all these years sometimes you fumble your first interview for a new job #and three different people come to your aid to prepare you for the second interview only because they're on your little coffee team #anyway you open the oyster and instead of a pearl it contains a perfectly brewed cuppa
