Babel is a poetry collective based out of the North Philadelphia area. Though our primary focus is spoken word, music and lyricism, we support the progression of the arts, not only on the Temple University campus, but throughout Philadelphia. Throughout the semester, we hold free writing workshops and open mics for poets and active minds in the Philadelphia area. Each semester, we hold a a show called Babylon, a spoken word showcase with a feature performance.
Art is important to us because it is necessary, both for freedom of expression and survival. The human experience is one that is shared, but seldom spoken of. We believe that by simply telling our stories, we are working to bridge gaps and create harmony both locally and globally.
In this vein, we are expanding beyond our local community. Babel is growing in major ways - not only with our art, but with our audience. This semester, we plan on doubling the amount of people that we share our stories with. However, with this vision comes a cost. By supporting this cause, you are allowing for us to execute our biggest showcase yet. This will include an audience of 400, vendors, a musical feature, and live painters. In executing this show, we hope to help the poetry community to grow so that writers from all walks of life can have a safe space to get free.
"If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them."
