your artstyle is unlike anything i've seen in fanart before and i'm absolutely in love with it. idk if you answered that already but what do you take inspiration from?

My biggest inspiration is definitely 20th century design & art. I've grown up around it and it's always what I'm drawn to most in galleries. Within this, I have a huge love of midcentury posters & advertisements (I collect magazines just to look at them) as well as cookery leaflets. Within the ad world by far my favourite artists are Bob Peak, who's had an immense influence on me, and Charles Schridde, though those are just two artists I can name, because most artists working for advertising companies of course aren't credited.

I also really like Sargent's Gassed, Picasso's Guernica, Degas (most modernist & impressionist painters really), Lucienne Day (I've grown up surrounded by her designs), the Preraphaelites & the arts and crafts movement, and the Tinga Tinga painting my grandparents have always had up in their house. I've been influenced by my parents who are both artists a lot too, I love flicking through my dads sketchbooks of collages & looking at his ceramics and the larger works by them both up in the house.

One thing I always endorse if you're an artist like me who's primarily online is getting out there & finding artists in galleries you feel connected to and draw inspiration from them. Even as a digital artist, I find traditional art far more inspiring & educational. That might just be my preference but it's really helped me!

I knew I'd forgotten something- this pastel sketch by C.R.W. Nevinson. It's at the IWM London & I stood by it for about 20 minutes when I saw it.

The finished painting is in Canada but I like the pastel sketch more, actually. Partly because I love using pastels myself, but the shapes are defined in a way I really like.

I love the IWM's gallery because it's virtually all of the era of art I really enjoy. There is a certain tone to war art that I like a lot, everything becomes very sharp and angular.

Another thing I remembered is I really like graffiti & spotting graffiti. Martha Cooper's photographs of the movement in NYC in the 80's are really fantastic.

The UK, especially London, still has its own scenes & whenever I go down I look out for pieces on the tube cars wherever I go. I find graffiti inspiring both in style and as both an art movement and political movement.

although i largely love terror/polar exploration fandom and think it's significantly more sensitive and thoughtful than most historically fixated spaces, there is also an undercurrent of subconscious racism and uncritical buy-in to the great man theory + belief that white men's stories no matter how relatively mundane/unremarkable are the center of everything. but then everyone thinks you're crazy for noticing it

and if reading this post makes you angry or upset or defensive i strongly recommend doing some self-reflection on why. what are the ways you yourself may be contributing to this undercurrent? are you someone who (even subconsciously) believes in great man theory and lets that bleed through how you write about history, franklin expedition or otherwise? if you are a contributor or possess these mindsets, you aren’t a bad person but it is your responsibility to reflect and unlearn. anti-racism and anti-colonialism is a constant ongoing process for all of us. these aren’t intrinsic virtues or labels you can slap on and call done. now stop making me read microaggressions on the app i downloaded to look at pictures of solomon tozer
