paul klee-Legend of the Nile, 1937
[paul klee is the embodiment of the white-washing/colonial cleansing of art in the early 1900′s. it’s not like i dislike paul klee work in the same way that i dislike Picasso’s work now, but it annoys me that Western artists, art archivists and historians positioned paul and others like him (Western-trained male artists) as having a “childlike perspective” (eccentric Western male artists trope) while black/nbbpoc/Indigenous artists’ work is described as *childish* and *underdeveloped*, only a handful of them making it into the *canon*/general public’s consciousness. like what did paul klee, a Swiss-German, really know about the Nile while making this painting?]
