Jason perched on the edge of the tub, his hand covering hers as she pat his knee. He was ready to call whoever she was going to name, only relaxing when she said that she thought the worst of it was over for now. âMaybe⊠you shouldnât be alone through all of this. I mean, normal pregnancy is hard enough and this seems⊠abnormal. It is, right? Obviously Iâm not an expert.â He was pretty sure that it had to be- especially since it had freaked Lou out. She worked in the medical field after all, surely she wouldnât be freaked out by normal.
She laced her fingers with his and squeezed his hand reassuringly. Though she wasnât sure at this point who exactly she was reassuring. His suggestion had a certain amount of merit, but the part where he wondered if this was abnormal made her laugh hysterically for a moment until she covered her mouth and made herself breath. She would start hyperventilating if she wasnât careful. âSorry. Itâs not funny, Iâm just - itâs abnormal. Most definitely.â She reached forward and grabbed a washcloth, working it over her legs and arms, avoiding her stomach for the moment. Finally, she rested her hand on it. And felt movement. She froze, feeling it. But it didnât feel - monstrous. Not that sheâd know what monstrous felt like exactly. It didnât feel wrong. âTheyâre still alive. I thought maybe it was some sort of miscarriage.â She shivered and kept touching her stomach. She pressed to try and determine where one ended and the other one began. She got a sense of elbows, knees, a head, a tiny bum. All far past what they should have been. âIâve heard of pregnancies advancing like this but not - not at this level. And -â She didnât add that usually everyone died. She wasnât dead. The babies werenât dead. That was something. She felt horrified by what had happened but the intense amount of hormones still made her want to protect the little things growing inside of her with her life. âHow is it possible to love something that hurts you so badly?â
Jason stared at her as she laughed, genuinely more worried than heâd even been initially. He waited it out, unsure what to do at this point. He bit his lip as he watched her press around her belly, wishing that he knew what to say. It was honestly the first time that heâd ever seen a naked pregnant belly in person, kind of caught off guard by how creepy it was. He couldnât imagine how terrifying it would be to have the thing attached to your body.Â
âI guess... hormones OP.â He shrugged lamely, rubbing his own arm as he moved to stand. âIâll get you a clean towel.â He offered, stepping out into the hallway to get a towel from the closet. He stopped at his bedroom and got a t-shirt too, pulling it over his head as he walked back into the bathroom.  He sat down on the edge of the tub again, clearing his throat as he rested the folded towel on his knee. âIâm not- I donât know much about all of this.â He admitted, looking down at her in the tub. âI want to help, but... I donât know how.â

Being naked made her notice small details she hadnât before. Her breasts were larger. And somehow the enormous stretch marks that should cover her stomach were barely even there. It wasnât possible to grow so much without there being some sort of result. It should be catastrophic. But it wasnât. She didnât understand and she wasnât sure if that worried or comforted her.Â
He lowered her into the water and it made her feet sting but she didnât mind, the heat felt too good against her skin. She sank down, letting him prop her head up. With serious effort, she lifted her arm out of the tub and reached out to pat him on the knee. He looked so nervous. âYou can call -â She tried to remember the name of the nurse on the maternity ward and blanked. She didnât want to call anyone at the hospital. Brand might find out. âIâll call Aamir. Or Charlie. That is, Dr. Tandon or Baptiste. If anything changes. Iâm - I think the bad partâs over.â She looked at her stomach and wasnât sure.

She closed her eyes when he picked her up, pressing her face into his chest as if she could erase everything and make it all a dream again. But the pain at least was real. Jason was being remarkably careful and she almost laughed with the way he was touching her legs. It seemed like ages since heâd given her a massage.Â
She winced as he cleaned the cuts but said nothing, just nodding at his offer. She felt so tired, she wasnât sure she could make it home on her own anyway. At the very least, sheâd have to borrow shoes. She looked up at him and shook her head. âStay. Please.â She didnât want to be alone with her now protruding belly and her memories of pain. Awkwardly, she gestured her nightgown. âI think I need help getting this off. And - I donât want to drown accidentally.â She sighed, but remembered she was always scolding Jason for avoiding telling the truth. âI just - Iâd really like you to stay with me and tell me that Iâm okay.â
Jason nodded, unwilling to argue with anything that she asked of him at this point. He didnât really know what was going on but he could tell that it was serious. He gently helped her out of her nightgown, caught off guard by just how round her pregnant belly had gotten. He couldnât think of anything to say, afraid of asking her if she thought that was normal or when the last time sheâd been to a doctor was.
âItâll be okay. Youâre okay.â He promised her, determined to not be weird for her sake. He picked her up and moved her to the tub, lowering her into the warm water. He grabbed his towel and rolled it to place behind her neck and shoulders. âDo you want me to call anyone?â He asked, wondering if any of her friends or coworkers from the hospital would be able to come by and check on her. His only experience with any of this had been being a bystander to Emelieâs pregnancy with James, but he definitely didnât remember Emelieâs stomach growing that drastically in such a short time.

The idea of a bath sounded good. Normal. She nodded. âAlright.â She tried to walk but her feet suddenly hurt so badly she hissed, leaning against the wall so she could look at them. The bottoms were cut to hell. Her feet had been so numb from cold she hadnât noticed. âCan you carry me?â She was embarrassed to ask, but the more her feet warmed up, the more just standing on them burned.Â
Jason cringed as he saw the bottoms of her feet when she lifted them. He nodded quickly, stepping forward and leaning down to carefully pick her up. He cradled her in his arms, carrying her back to the bathroom. He sat her down on the edge of the bathroom counter, turning the water on to fill the bathtub before turning back to her. He turned on the water in the sink, gently taking her legs and pulling her feet into the bowl.Â
âItâs gonna be okay. You can stay here tonight.â He tried to clean the cuts on her feet and legs are gently as possible, being careful to wash any dirt and debris that were caught in the open wounds. He looked up at her face, reaching to turn off the sink faucet. âYou- I can wait outside if you want.â He wasnât going to assume that she wanted him to stick around for her to bathe. He had seen her naked before but that had been an entirely different situation.Â

She looked behind her, even though heâd closed the door. Had something been following her? She tried to remember. âIt was - I had a dream. I donât remember exactly what it was, but it was - it hurt. It hurt so badly I thought someone was tearing me apart. I woke up, and it still hurt. Everywhere, it was like -â she shuddered and pressed against him, having to turn to keep her belly from getting in between. âI just ran, I thought something was in the house. I could feel my bones breaking and my skin tearing. I swear, I just - I ran through the woods and then -â She shivered and put her hands on his chest, trying to pull the heat out of him and into her. She felt like sheâd never be warm again. âIt stopped and I was - like this.â
Jason reached up to push her hair away from her face, listening with concern. Was it possible that sheâd just been dreaming all of it? He wasnât sure what to make of it all. âLetâs get you cleaned up. And warm. I can run you a warm bath.â He suggested, nodding back towards the hallway where the bathroom was.

She had trouble focusing on Jason, as though he were talking to her from a distance. On some level, she could remember that she was in danger of going into shock, but it was so hard to focus on that. Him touching her brought her focus back. âI think I ran into the woods and got lost. And then - I guess I came here.â She noticed a clock and saw what time it was. âOh, Iâm so sorry, I woke you. You can go back to bed, Iâll just -â She wasnât sure what sheâd do. Bits and pieces came back to her. Sheâd had nightmares. Or maybe theyâd been real. She wasnât sure this wasnât a nightmare.
âNo, itâs fine.â Jason assured her, clasping her hands between his in an attempt to warm them. âWas something- Did something happen? Why were you running into the woods?â He asked, wondering what had scared her so badly. He wanted her to be safe- and he wanted to know that he didnât have to worry about anything having followed her there.

Lou didnât resist being pulled into Jasonâs apartment, standing on the floor and looking around, feeling as if sheâd never been here before. But she had, very recently. It was her that was different. She looked down at her hands, which were showing signs of cold and then noticed her feet. âIâm going to get mud all over your floor.â She looked around for something to clean her feet with but there didnât seem to be anything.Â
Jason shook his head, not giving a shit about the floors. It wasnât like the security deposit meant much anyway when the town was overrun with demons and angels. âLou, look at me. Are you okay?â He asked, reaching out to touch her arm. She was freezing. He frowned, his hands reaching for hers and holding them to warm them. âLetâs get you warmed up, okay?â He suggested.

Lou slammed her open palm against the door frantically. It was early, too early, and she couldnât breathe. Sheâd been running. She wasnât even wearing shoes. Her bare feet were wet and muddy, bleeding from the left heel. She was wearing her nightgown. It hung around her knees. Her legs had slashes of mud along them and red whip-marks, as if sheâd run through bushes. She couldnât remember getting here. She couldnât remember anything after waking up this morning. There was a strange, ragged noise in her ears and she realized it was her, breathing. She covered her mouth with her hand, trying to quiet herself and sobbing without being sure why. She pounded on the door again with her other hand. She stared down at her stomach, which was pressed against her nightgown so tightly that it was stuck to her skin at the back. It protruded so far ahead of her that she couldnât see her feet. Taking her hand away from her mouth, she rested her hand against it and recoiled when she felt movement.Â
The door opened and she turned, gasping. âPlease, I donât know whatâs wrong with me.â
Jason groaned as he rolled out of bed, half-asleep as he dragged himself out of the bedroom. He hit the lights as he entered the main room of his apartment, squinting as his eyes adjusted. He assumed that it was Kjerstin or Justin pounding on his door at this time of the night (or morning, rather). He unlocked the door and opened it, forgetting to be tired the moment that he saw Lou standing there looking the way that she did.Â
âWhat happened?â He asked, not even noticing her stomach at first. He was afraid that she had been attacked, guessing from her muddied appearance that she had been scared or chased. He pulled her inside, shutting the door behind them and locking it. âAre you okay?â He asked, only then catching sight of her stomach. He wasnât sure but he was pretty sure that she shouldnât have grown that much since the last time that heâd seen her.

âFine. Iâll see that redhead.â
âYou sure? Donât let me twist your arm here.â

âYou can still find happiness with someone else.â
justin-aker:
âYou know, I was happy with Jessica and you thought that was bullshit.â
âI didnât want you to ruin things with Em and your son. And I didnât believe that Jessica was serious about you.â
justin-aker:
âWhatâs wrong with her? âCause I know thereâs gotta be a catch.â
âCome on, man. You know I want you to be happy.â
justin-aker:
âYou know I do.â
âSo hey, I might have an in for you with that redhead nurse from the hospital. All you gotta do is say the word.â
justin-aker:
âI love you too.â
