This week, I’ll be posting photographs of the 2nd CONIFA football world cup in Abkhazia, a partially-recognized state between Russia and Georgia. Last week, the obscure football tournament hosted 12 autonomous regions -- homelands to ethnic minorities and stateless communities -- with aspirations of nationhood that are not allowed to play in sanctioned FIFA tournaments. #Abkhazia #football #popcorn #Babushka #Sukhumi #onassignment

The New River, the most severely polluted river of its size in the United States, flows through Mexicali and into Calexico on its way towards the Salton Sea, carrying mostly agriculture runoff, municipal discharge and industrial waste. Anti-poaching rangers with the Nigerian National Park Service begin moving camp during a week-long patrol inside of the Oban region of the Cross Rivers National Park in Nigeria. The rangers, with assistance from @thewcs, are working to protect the park while educating the nearby encroaching communities about the damage hunting wildlife and fishing with chemicals in the rivers is doing to the park and the surrounding ecosystem. Refugees continue to land on the island of Lesbos even though Macedonia has all but shut their border to Greece, creating a large bottleneck that resulted in people storming the Idomeni border today while Macedonian police fired tear gas on them. Emrah Can, a Turkish lifeguard working on the island of Lesbos, carries a young child from an inflatable boat in January 2016. In January, over 52k refugees and migrants crossed the eastern Mediterranean, more then 35 times as many migrants in 2015.
