Missy Elliott’s 2001 get-me-to-the-nearest-dancefloor smash “Get Ur Freak On” is the title of this year’s Pop Conference. So it seems particularly appropriate to assemble a roundtable discussion to deconstruct the MC-crooner-producer-songwriter’s two-decades-plus creative output.

Cresting on innovative productions for artists like Aaliyah and SWV and solo hits like late 90s groover “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” Elliott rose to mainstream visibility by crafting an innovative fusion of hip-hop and soul that ultimately helped explode the musical and sonic vocabulary of all 21st century pop.

Stylizing her body as a canvas, she accompanied her music releases with glammed-out, envelope-pushing videos. In retrospect, Elliott crafted an alternative and transgressive vision of divadom that in turn helped open up cultural space for successive generations of rebellious creatives like M.I.A., Nikki Minaj, Azealia Banks, Kimbra, and Zebra Katz. Elliott has never really been given her critical due as a musical, sonic and cultural innovator—so our roundtable is designed to correct that, as we discuss the way Missy’s work, both in the US and abroad, engages issues like race, gender, sexuality, freakery, pleasure, technology and futurism.
