Gopnik - is representative of the informal stratum of the population with a low social status. Poorly educated, primitive, aggressive-minded contingent. Most often, young people from dysfunctional families, joining together to search for self-assertion by criminal, destructive methods.
In part, Takaba Akihito corresponds to this concept (Japanese style only, in past).
Japanese delinquents in manga/anime have their own stereotypical features:- The slicked back hair, or stylized hair in a “rizento” or a pompadour.
- Dyed or bleached hair. The most popular color is blonde, an easy clue-in to not mess with them, although other colors can be used too.
- A school-uniform (sometimes with the sleeves ripped off).
- Blunt weapons such as bats, planks, poles, and bokken (wooden swords).
- Excessive piercings and jewellery, scars, tattoos, and other body modifications.
- A facial mask of some kind, especially a surgical one.
- Jackets worn over the shoulders.
- Trousers rolled up to just below the knee. Sleeves are often rolled up too.
- Sarashi. Is Japanese for “bleached cloth”, usually cotton, or less commonly linen. Such cloth may be wrapped around the body under a kimono, or around the chest.
- Coat capes, combat pants, boots and commissar caps.
- Twigs, blades of straw or grass, or cigarettes in the mouth.
When first appears a male delinquent character will traditionally be in a distinctive pose: head tilted back and to the side and upper body leaning back with hips thrust out and shoulders hunched forward, with either arms folded or hands in pockets. In more recent works, will sometimes instead see the “slav squat” borrowed from slavic gopniks. It seems in Japanese it’s called the “unko suwari” position, also known as the “shit squat".
Their behaviour is a general blend of everything you would expect from someone called a delinquent: getting into fights, commit acts of vandalism, shoplifting, shaking down the meek, disturbing the peace, and generally just not getting along with society at large.
In Japanese, delinquents are referred to as ヤンキー [yankii], while their leaders are called 番長 [banchō].
Yakuza, Japan’s indigenous organized crime syndicates, tend to have little respect for delinquents. In their eyes, yakuza are professional criminals with a sense of tradition, whereas delinquents are just upstart punks with an attitude.
