nik-greyson:
He’d done the cost-benefit analysis in seconds, in the amount of time it took the other man to blink three times. The guy was a cop, which meant nothing to Nik except for the fact that he clearly liked being a cop and had already informed Nik that he was arrest happy. And if Nik got arrested, he’d lose the moral highground he had with his siblings, or at least Dara, considering she’d use it against him.
After all, if he could commit petty thievery and eat an apple without paying for it, then weren’t they right to look an imposter in the eye and believe a confession damning him to hell for a laundry list of sins he’d committed against them?
None of this made it’s way to the cop, however, who instead got Nik narrowing his gaze at him and handing him two dollars. “You must be really fun at parties.”
Jax shrugged simply. He had been hyper-vigilant since the attack at Spring Fling, mostly because his moment of hesitation had led to him being shot and killed. If he let down his guard, if people thought they could get away with things even as small as petty crime, who knew how quickly things could escalate?
A shadow darted out of the corner of his eye and he snapped his head in the direction of the movement before realizing there was nothing there. He stiffened and returned his attention to the man. Maybe there were more reasons why he was feeling paranoid.
He handed the man back the two dollars. “Hey man, I don’t work here,” he said quietly, shaking his head softly before looking back over his shoulder. Was something watching them? “You’ll...have to go to check out, I guess.”
