Like countless families before us, our trip to the Grand Canyon began with a minivan. Two men, three kids, and me – the lone adult female, set off from Southern California at 5am. Naturally, our hopes on the little ones falling asleep for the first several hours didn’t pan out. They were wide awake and took less than 2 hours to ask “Are we there yet?” Secretly, I love it when kids say this because it provides me the opportunity to say “Yeah, get out!” as they look at me dumbfounded. The drive there was admittedly uneventful. The scenery consisted of miles and miles of desert and while I love the vastness of it all, I’ve seen it so many times that it doesn’t awe me enough anymore to take out the camera. It first made its appearance at Delgadillo’s Snow Cap Café. This odd oasis in the desert was the inspiration for the movie Cars and they just so happen to have some of the best milkshakes I’ve ever had. It was so good that we stopped there again on the way home.
