Another thought for the evening. I wanna talk about the fingers thing.
Let's talk about this insanely intimate and romantic gesture. (And why Luke Newton was brilliant for thinking of it.)
The thing about it - THE THING - is that it shows the insane amount of respect and care he has for Penelope. At this point, he's already gotten on his knees and expressed how much he loves her with his words. And then he physically showed her what love was.
But then this? But then making sure to pull her dress up, and return her to good standing, so delicately and tenderly, while making sure she doesn't get the stickiness of fluids all over her or the dress? It's another gesture of kindness and adorating. It's a matter of respect for her. That he'll deal with the mess so she doesn't have to. (and, god, added with that gentle brush of hair off the shoulder...)
It's a truly beautiful moment of thoughtful aftercare for a lover. Colin Bridgerton, man that you are, wanting her to have the best experience.
And goddamn, the thought of Luke Newton thinking of that... Just, all the flowers for adding that little moment in. Because it's such a tiny detail that didn't need to happen, but does, and enhances the romance by so much more.
In contrast, we have this... *sigh*
Which, I'm not blaming the character, nor am I even blaming Luke Thompson (cause, you know, they're doing what they can with the script they're given).
It's the fact that the show is completely missing the point and the purpose of the moment above. THEY LIKED THE FINGERS the writers gathered. But I feel like they missed WHY we liked that moment.
Because it added another layer of care and love and respect and connection between the two characters. Here it's like... okay?
Does Sophie really get why he's doing it? (I'm sure she can guess) but it feels vulgar. It feels more like Benedict going, I'm gonna rock your world girl, without any pretense or purpose. It feels like it's more about him showing off than it is about him actually connecting with her. (Not to mention idk how much that's going to help with what they're doing, but I digress...)
It also feels like it's trying to capitalize on a moment from a previous season and it falling flat rather than letting an organic moment happen between Benedict and Sophie (which I think they fully deserved, and both characters deserved better.)
Anyway... that's just how I feel. If y'all liked it, don't come at me, you do you. I don't mean to piss in your cereal. I just feel like it didn't hit right because it missed why the carriage scene worked.
