Throughout this semester Gender has been a very controversial topic in this class. People that don't have usually participate in class would have a comment . I believe that women and men play two important roles in society. in my culture men are looked at as the dominant and strong figure, that is suppose to provide for his family. And women are looked as being mentally strong and are raised to be independent. In my opinion there’s certain things that men can do that women can't and vise versa. Women has accomplished a lot, ever since Women suffrage  women has been outstanding with showing mental and physical strength.

in the begging of the semester when Professor Mary Beth first announced that we would have to every week i wasn't too thrilled. i never had a tumblr account and i thought it was instagram and i had to get a fan base. i really wasn't sure what we was getting into. As the weeks went by blogging became something i looked forward to. The topics were fresh and i could see what my other classmates opinions was. The first few blogs i thought it was very easy then things started to get complicated but interesting. It took me a while to work tumblr but when i got the hang of things and could see my peers topics, i was amazed because my topics seemed boring compared to there’s. Blogging has helped me become a better writer since writing every week became regular. Also i worked on my weakness which is proofreading. I have to proofread my blogs because mistakes are unacceptable especially when you are posting things on the media. Over this course i made mistakes but i learned from them. For example when i did a previous blog and i forgot to cite where i got my information from i had to remember plagiarism still existed. But overall i really enjoy this course and the blogging

can love really be there?

A topic that it important to me that we should talk about that we haven’t talked about this semester is love. How would a person truly know they are in love. Would god give you the signs? What are the signs? Could the signs be: -having deep conversations -going to sleep to eachothers voice -telling secrets to eachother -telling other people’s secrets to eachother -sharing pictures of eachother on social media -making slide shows for couple goals -going to the movies -arguing and making up -telling childhood memories with eachother -Holding hands in public -showing eachother off -not acting shy Is that enough? Is that what love is?

This topic is important to me because a person can go years thinking the person they are with loves them because of the things they do together. But deep down the other could possibly not feel the same way. The love might not be on the same level. What if the other is trying to figure out a way to say “i want to see other people” was the love ever there then?

If a person loves you isn’t he or she supposed to stay with you because you can only have that type of love for one person. Type of love? How many types are they? Could they be: -the Love for your personality -the love for your money -the love for they way you Lust -the love for your faithfulness -the love for your honesty We need to educate our selves on this so we dont be fooled or tricked! By being suckered into that faze that we thought was gonna be forever!

People shouldn’t cause such heart break, such stress. The stress of thinking the love was real.

It shouldn’t break you though, it should help build you and teach you. It should teach that you do not NEED a man or woman. You should be able to strive alone, and do bad all by your self!

But should you hold a barrier up? Not letting anyone in forever? No. You do not want to possibly block your true match out because you thought it was just another person trying to come in your life just to walk out. Do not block ck out the wrong person, you do want to give some one a chance some day. Its just the matter of, is the love real or not? How do you know? If i can not truly find out, then would i ever find out?

i feel that this is a very interesting topic and its something that we can all relate to. Everybody say that Love is a strong word but people use it so often that they forget the real meaning. Some people feel that they have to display there love on social media in order for it to be official and known. Social media can be a curse to what people call love because when u out a relationship out on the media people have comments and concerns and most of the time that relationship doesn't last because everyone is in your business but yet you thought it was love. i can agree with you that the things you listed are justified to be things people do when their in love but do u have to do all of that to show you love someone?

The Story of Emmett Till

Dr. Martin Luther King once said “I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality…… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.” Since we are in Black History Month I would like to discuss the brutal beating of Emmett Till.  

Emmett Louis Till was born July 25, 1941. Emmett Till was a 14 year old African American male who grew up in the Jim Crow era. The Jim Crow laws were in the United States history rulings enacted by Southern states and cities, beginning in the 1880s that endorsed segregation between African Americans and Caucasians. The name is believed to be derived from a character in a popular minstrel song.   Emmett Till was born in Chicago Illinois. In the summer of 1955 Emmett Till and his family visited relatives in Money Mississippi. He spoke to a 21 year old white women in a grocery store by the name of Carolyn Bryant.  Several nights later, Bryant’s husband Roy and his half-brother J.W. Milam went armed to Till’s great uncles house and abducted Emmett Till. Both Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam lynched Emmett Till. They took him away beat mutilated him before hopelessly shooting him and sinking his body in the Tallahatchie River with a 70 pound cotton gin fan tied around his neck with barbed wire.. Three days later, Emmett Till’s body was discovered and retrieved from the river.  

Emmett Till’s body was returned to Chicago. Emmett Till’s mother insisted on a public funeral service, with an open casket so as to show the world the brutality of racism in the South. Emmett Till’s mother’s decision focused attention not only on American racism and the barbarism of lynching but also on the limits and susceptibilities of American democracy. Tens of thousands attended his funeral or viewed his casket, and images of his mutilated body were published in black-oriented magazines and newspapers, rallying popular black support and white sympathy across the U.S. Penetrating examination was brought to bear on the lack of black civil rights in Mississippi, with newspapers around the country critical of the state. In the trail Bryant and Milam both was found innocent.

Thus, the murder of Emmett Till became one of the leading struggles in the American Civil Rights Movement. The main suspects were acquitted and later admitted to the murder.

This story is an important story to Black History Month. And is very heart breaking. Racism is a problem that still exists today. For Emmett Till, a young African American boy that had to experience a cruel punishment for talking to a 21year old young white lady is absurd. Just imagining what his mother had to feel seeing her son is crucial. This story opened the eyes of many Americans. This is a good example of racism in America. The Jim Crow Era was a time in history where African Americans faced discrimination and inequality. Emmett Till was one of many people that died because of racial acts.

World Hunger

World Hunger is an extremely important issue that I believe is not discussed enough in our society. World Hunger and Starvation is an epidemic that is far too often overlooked by people in our country. Hunger is a term which has three meanings (Oxford English Dictionary 1971): the uneasy or painful sensation caused by want of food; craving appetite. Also, the exhausted condition caused by want of food, the want or scarcity of food in a country, and/or a strong desire or craving. In 2013, the world hunger organization reported 6.3 million children under the age of five died, approximately 17,000 children a day in Africa died from starvation. The fact that this epidemic is a social norm and the enormity of innocent children having to go to bed and not have enough to eat every single night and tomorrow not being promised is a heart wrenching and surreal. Poor nutrition is approximately 45% of deaths in adolescents and children who are poorly nourished will suffer five times more illnesses than the average child.

World Hunger does not just affect children it affects adults as well. Worldhunger.org stated that “The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that about 795 million people of the 7.3 billion people in the world, or one in nine, were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2014-2016.” This implies that one out of every nine people you possibly know are suffering from undernourishment. This is still a very real issue right now in developing countries. Somalia is going through a severe drought right now and it appears that no one is discussing this in any news or media outlet. Over half of their population is still waiting on food and have no water, this is being described as one of the worse famines and droughts they have been in almost a decade. The people of Somalia have not received any governmental assistance or food aid yet and the temperature is only rising.

Just last week the Somalian Prime Minister said that in a weeks’ time one hundred-ten people died from starvation and drought related illnesses just in that week alone. This is a state of emergency and it appears that they are being neglected once again just like in 2011’s famine. As one world, we must look after and out for one another despite that we are on different continents this is the only earth we know of and we are responsible for each other whether we like it or not. So, the next time you suggest that you are “so hungry, starving” just realize how blessed you really are and know it could always be so much worse as compared to developing countries who go without eating for ten days or more.

Many children are suffering from hunger because the government is being naïve to this issue. The children that are dying could be our next doctors, soldiers, or teachers. With the huge number of people suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2014-2016, this is a global problem and should get more attention. Not only are the children suffering, but the elderly. What happens to the elderly that cant walk or that needs to be supervised how are they being feed? These are individuals that are veterans, citizens, and hard working people. Everyone should have something to eat and clean water.

Blog 10

The strongest presentation in my opinion was the one on Gun Control. This is a very controversial topic in the U.S. I do believe that guns should be limited and the laws should be stricter. Even though in some states getting a license gun is different and sometimes difficult. Getting an illegal gun is easy; you just have to know the right people. Living in New York City I experienced a lot with guns, one of them being in the cross fire of a gang fight. I agree that the laws should be stricter because people are using these tools for destruction I feel that the presenter had a good amount of knowledge on his topic and when he brought a bullet capsule for his presentation that put the icing on the cake.

The presentation that persuaded me the most was the one on clean water. When she announced that water is a natural resource and everyone should have clean water. It made me realize if I’m a working American citizen and I pay my taxes why don’t I have clean water? This is a question that the people in Flint Michigan are probably asking. At first when I heard about Flint Michigan and its water crisis I thought the government would take affirmative action with fixing this problem. After her presentation I realized that this problem is still occurring it shows what type of government we have today. I agree that everyone should have access to clean water and shouldn’t have to worry about it being contaminated. What about the families that live in that area and cant afford to move out? The children that live in that area and drinking the infested water I wonder if the government is thinking about them while they figure out how to fix this issue.

I learned that many people have different views on topics that are controversial.  All the presenters have taught me the issues in the current events in the United States. Even though some topics were old topics they still have ties to todays event. With upcoming projects it’s best to have evidence for every claim.  Make sure that when doing an argumentative essay or presentation to show and explain the opposite side opinion and why your claims are right. Also it’s best for you to stand by your topic no matter the audience thoughts and there’s a strong thesis.

Meals on Wheels

 Meals on Wheels America is the oldest and largest national organization supporting more than 5,000 community-based senior nutrition programs across the country that are dedicated to addressing senior hunger and isolation. Established in 1974, it has provided funding, leadership, education and advocacy support, Meals on Wheels America empowers its local members to provide services to their communities. More than two million volunteers deliver the nutritious meals, friendly visits, and safety checks. And those who are more ambulatory are fed at local community and senior centers

 President Donald Trump 2018 budget could slash some funding for a program that provides meals for the older. Programs across the country are serving fewer meals and are waiting to join Meals on Wheels because of how much it’s growing. Jenny Bertolette, that’s in the communicating and marketing team at Meals Wheels says “The Older Americans Act, as a function of the US Department of Health and Human Services, which is facing the specter of cuts itself, covers 35% of the costs for the visits, safety checks and meals that the local agencies dole out to 2.4 million senior citizens,” This is an issue if President Donald Trump cuts the budget for this organization. Even though 3% of the budget for Meals on Wheels' national office comes from government grants. Each state allocates this funding differently, so it's difficult to summarize the total impact on the nationwide network. For Example City meal on Wheels has 15,412 New Yorkers whose dedicated volunteers that delivers food and connect with the elderly people in the neighborhood.

  If President Donald Trump has a tight budget why cant he cut an Organization that doesn’t have involves elderly?

 How many Americans have a disability that counts on Meals on Wheels?

 If President Donald Trump cuts the budget, will Meals on Wheels ever overcome there lost?

 Has someone tried to put a stop to Donald trumps decision?

 How many veterans are meals on wheels feeding?

 Are Elderly citizens important to America Society?

 This is something that we should educate ourselves with because this is a current event issue. And that will impact many elderly Americans. Also the community service that the dedicated volunteers receive will get cut. Some of these elderly people are veterans that has served this country and fought for our safety and freedom.  What will happen to those that can’t walk and make their food, they just going to order food for rest of their life.

Things that could be better at Buffalo State College

In college, dining should be something that students should enjoy everyday because we pay a lot of money for it and it’s suppose to fill our stomach every meal. At Buffalo State College the food isn’t that good everyday and sometimes the food isn’t cooked well done. One evening I had dinner at dining and ate chicken that wasn’t cooked all the way and I had to complain to management because I could’ve gotten salmonella. The college can improve by making sure the food is at its fullest temperature and the food getting checked on so they know that the meat or any other foods is well done. Another tip is putting enough ingredients in the food. For example when you make pizza, the pizza should have enough tomato sauce on the pie so it wont be considered cheesy bread because that’s how it taste most of the time. Other than that the dining themes are very interested. Something that really taste good is their “Arroz con pollo” on the Spanish holidays.

Another issue is the Residents Assistants here at Buffalo State in the freshman dorm halls, pick and choose when to chastise students. I feel that all students that attend Buffalo State should get treated the same especially when it comes to breaking rules. For example if “Quiet hours” is at 10pm and students are being to loud in the hallway and the RA see who is making the noise then act like they didn’t witness students disturbing the peace. But the next day another group of students are doing the same thing and the RA actually does something isn’t fair. The rule should be followed everyday with student. The Res Life can improve by explaining to their employees that it’s not professional to show favoritism to certain students just because they have a more personal connection with one than the other. Also they should remember that this is a job that they get paid for and they should show more professionalism when it comes to talking to a student because they are older and should be setting an example to the freshman.

In my opinion these are two major problems that I have at Buffalo State. Other than that this college is a place where I can get my education and graduate from. The staff always tries to help students succeed and is always willing to help in the best way they can. Also I’m glad that I met some pretty cool people that I will know for a lifetime.

James Farmer (Freedom Rider)

 Black History Month or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. Director James Farmer is a civil rights activist. Civil rights leader James Farmer headed the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and organized the historic Freedom Rides of 1961.

James Farmer worked on launching the Freedom Rides with the intention of challenging segregation on intestate bus travel, which had technically been declared illegal in 1946 and which CORE had taken action upon previously. The Freedom Riders consisted of both women and men, black and white who traveled on bus routes through Southern states. On May 4, 1961, a group of 13 African-American and white civil rights activists launched the Freedom Rides, a series of bus trips through the American South to protest segregation in interstate bus terminals. 

Departing from Washington, D.C., and attempted to integrate facilities at bus terminals along the way into the Deep South. African-American Freedom Riders tried to use “whites-only” restrooms and lunch counters, and vice versa. The group encountered tremendous violence from white protestors along the route, but also drew international attention to their cause. Over the next few months, several hundred Freedom Riders engaged in similar actions.

Farmer's main colleagues in the civil rights movement were the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference; Farmer himself risked his life in several demonstrations. In 1963, Louisiana State troopers armed with guns, cattle prods and tear gas, hunted him door to door when he was trying to organize protests in the town of Plaquemine. Farmer went to jail for "disturbing the peace" in Plaquemine, and At one point, a friendly F.B.I. agent told Farmer that an informant had infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in Louisiana, and had reported that the Klan had voted to kill Farmer the next time he set foot in Bogalusa. 

John Farmer was an important asset to Black History month. He challenged the Jim Crow Laws so we can all be equal today anywhere we go in America. Him and his colleagues made big sacrifices and for that I am thankful for their belief of change.

Sojourner Truth Speech

In the speech “Ain’t I a Woman” Sojourner Truth expressed how living was hard as a woman in the 1850’s. She goes into about how expectations for women wasn’t as charming as people thought. Women worked just as hard as men and didn’t get much credit as they should. In the 1850s African American woman and men was still slaves at the time. Not only did they had to work hard in the plantations but had to work full days. With them working as much as a man, they should be looked at equally. Women was expected to get married and have children just so they could get sold. And truth went into depth about how women went through the worst.

 Pathos

Sojourner Truth was a prominent abolitionist and women’s rights activist. She was born into slavery in New York State. Truth was a powerful speaker whose legacy of feminism and racial equality. After escaping Slavery her remarkable voice raised in support of abolitionism, the freedmen, and women’s rights. Her use of emotional appeal, captured her audience so they could feel her pain and her story. For example, she says “I could work as much and eat as much as a man- when I could get it- and bear the lash as well! And ain't I a woman?” Women went through the same pain as men and also worked just as much as them but don’t get recognized as strong women.

 Logos

With mentioning God in her speech shows a different aspect of men should obey women. When she said “If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back, and get it right side up again! And now they is asking to do it, the men better let them. “With using information from the bible shows her use of logos because of the number of people that were religious. Also with women joining together and taking a stand for women. A change ought to happen because how powerful they were and were strong enough to change the world.

 Ethos

The lives black women had to live was hard because the amount of work they were doing, the children they had to take care of and just surviving in a time such as slavery. For Example, “Then that little man in black there, he says women can't have as much rights as men, 'cause Christ wasn't a woman!”. Women were looked down at and never as look like an equal to men. Men at the time felt that women wouldn’t gain as many rights as we have today.

  Women like Sojourner truth worked hard for women to receive rights just like men. Her strong character made a difference to many people that was going through slavery at the time and gave them hope. With reading her speech gave me hope as I see what she went through and how different it is today. With the President that we have today, Women still stand together strong against the belittling views that men show.

Beyoncé Knowles is a multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning recording artist who's known for her thrilling vocals, videos and live shows.  The notoriously private couple went public with the news of their impending new arrival. Beyoncé showed off her growing baby bump at the MTV Video Music Awards that August. Beyoncé and Jay-Z welcomed a baby daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, on January 7, 2012. The couple spared no expense to maintain their privacy during this special time, renting out a floor of New York's Lenox Hill Hospital.  Now that she is expecting twins there were negative comments because of how she revealed it.  Beyoncé has worked her way to the top and still has a strong fan base that supports her decision with performing at a late stage of pregnancy.

          In the article “Experts Weigh In on Beyoncé Performing While Pregnant With Twins at Grammys” Doctors made comments on how active she is in the stage that’s she’s in. Carrying one child can be tiring but two can make you extra tired but it seems like Beyoncé isn’t finished making her coin. Just because Beyoncé is practically a billionaire doesn’t mean she has to stop working and keeping her fame and body in shape. Most feel that she will have a premature delivery consideration when it comes to performing past a certain point in the pregnancy. She isn’t the only artist who was pregnant with twins and performed, Jennifer Lopez in 2008 finished her concert tour with ex spouse Marc Anthony.  If Jennifer Lopez can finish a tour why cant Beyoncé? In the music industry it’s all about making good music and staying relevant. And Beyoncé is doing what she has to do to, not only feed her family but also to satisfy her fans with her glorious music.

        As pregnant women you should know your limits and when to not do the extreme. I’m sure that Beyoncé pays good money for a choreographer that knows how to put on a show without her using all her strength. And I’m pretty sure that she’s in tiptop shape. Not only is she making her fans happy but she also can be an idol to the young females that’s pregnant working hard to feed their families. Queen B will continue being the queen she is and setting records. Her being pregnant is a blessing and not only is she bringing in one but two. Can’t wait for the big reveal when they are born and Blue Ivy can have fun with her siblings.

Making it to college wasn’t easy for me. I attended a high school in the middle of midtown where there was a bunch of stuff going on. It was my senior year and I had to pass my last regents in order to graduate. I’ve never been so scared to take an exam, Global is considered the hardest regents and I failed it twice.  My biggest mistake was letting procrastination get the best of me. When I tell myself that something needs to get done now, that’s how I succeed instead of putting the work aside and not doing it until the last moment. My school scheduled me with mandatory torturing so I could take advantage of all the work I could get because I only had one month to study for it.  Preparing for the exam I never really studied until then and it actually felt good.  I came up with new studying techniques I would put post it notes all over my room so I wouldn’t forget what I studied the night before. Also I would have a teacher everyday ask me a question that had something to do with history. The day finally approached for me to take the exam and I never felt so confident. I put my education first before I partied and all the hard work was about to pay off.

 I passed the exam with an 85 and I never felt so overjoyed. Not only did I prove to everyone that I could be successful in anything I put my mind to but also to myself. When I started having faith in myself is when I realized that I was ready for college.  One thing I realized was college is completely different from high school. Professors aren’t going to hold you hand to get work done. The treatment that I was getting from my teachers in high school wasn’t going to happen in college. It was time for me to grow up and be assertive and independent.  Now that I’m in my second semester of college I am now aware of what I have to do in order to be successful and that’s participant, make sure you ask for help when you don’t understand something. And be present in class not only physically but mentally because most professors pay attention to body language. This is just a story I wanted to share with you guys about how I got here and what I plan on doing for the rest of my four years.
